A letter opener machine's operating speed is the rate the letter opener's motor is capable of running. If the listed manufacturer operating speed is 4,000 envelopes per hour, then the machine will open 200 envelopes in approximately three minutes. However, the maximum operating speed does not mean that you should open 4,000 letters per hour for several hours a day. Operating a letter opener, or any mechanical equipment, at full capacity for an excessive amount of time will increase wear and reduce the life of the machine.
The recommended amount of envelopes that a letter opener should handle is the letter opener's duty cycle. The duty cycle of a specific letter opener can be found in the owner's manual, or you can call a qualified sales associate.
