ASK DAVE QUESTIONS Dear Dave: I just received my pouch laminator and was wondering if you had some recommendations on using it. What can I do to get the best results? How do I maintain it? Thank you, Stacey Stacey, Keeping your pouch laminator running properly is very easy. The first thing I would recommend is to carefully read the manual. It always amazes me how many people simply plug the laminator in and start using it before learning how to properly use it. Every pouch laminator has its own requirements that differ from one machine to another. One of the most important parts of the pouch laminator are the silicon rollers. Most pouch laminators have either two or four rollers. The silicon rollers are designed to absorb and distribute heat. They are also flexible and pliable, allowing them to help laminate a variety of products. It is important to keep the rollers clean. The first step in keeping the rollers clean is by using a carrier. Carriers look a lot like a manila folder. Their purpose is to help carry the lamination pouch through the machine. As the pouch rolls through the laminator, the silicon rollers put pressure on the film. As the pressure is applied, excess glue squeezes out the sides of the pouch. If the carrier is not used, the glue can get on the rollers and gum them up. Carriers also prevent lamination film from becoming wrapped up in the rollers. As with any pouch laminator, they can sometimes get jammed if a pouch is entered crooked or incorrectly into the machine. If a jam occurs, some pouch laminators have a reverse function that makes it easy to back the film out of the machine. Unfortunately, many people try to use scissors and other sharp objects to get film back out of the machine. These sharp object easily gash and cut the silicon rollers. Once cut or damaged, the rollers must be replaced. It is often less expensive to purchase a new laminator than replace the silicon rollers. In order to get the most pristine lamination out of your laminator, it is critical to make sure you have the temperature adjusted properly. Different pouch thickness requires different temperatures. Your manual should help you with that. If you notice bubbles or ripples in your lamination film, the laminator is probably running too hot. If the film appears to be cloudy, you more than likely have the laminator running too cold. To find out more about laminators and lamination, feel free to read our lamination guide: http://www.abcoffice.com/laminating_guide.htm. Dave: I really enjoy watching the ABC Office broadband video demos. Do you plan on making more? Thank you, Marty Marty: We are continually producing broadband video demos. We have found that it is often difficult for people to purchase equipment online when they haven't seen it in person. Our broadband demos help customers become more familiarized with equipment before purchasing it. We also offer live video demos. We have a camera capable of streaming video to your computer, allowing you to see equipment in action while talking to a sales associate. This allows you to ask questions about the machine while it is being used. The sales associate can provide you with real-time answers to your questions. If you are curious as to how a paper folder handles 11 by 17 paper, the sales associate can try it on the machine right then and there. Feel free to drop us a line and request a demo on any piece of equipment. Chances are that we can break it out and give you a live video demonstration. Dave: I was looking at your Rapid 106 stapler. I have an associate that has this same stapler and loves it. I am wondering what the group stapling kit does. Thanks! Craig Craig, The Rapid 106 stapler (http://www.abcoffice.com/stap106.htm) is a favorite among our customers as well. It is especially popular due to its ability to do both saddle and flat stapling. The electric motor is more than capable and can staple up to 40 sheets of paper at once. The group stapling kit allows you to link several staplers together. This means that when you push the foot pedal, it will activate all linked staplers at once. This is ideal for stapling booklets or multiple stacks of paper at once.
