New Gravity Drop Sealers Now on ABC Office

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Preferred Pack PP615-402 Gravity Drop SealerHave you ever wondered how food, such as tortillas, is packaged in those bags you see at the grocery store? Much of it is done by using a gravity drop sealer (found here). These same sealers are also used to package T-shirts, towels, books and much more. If you are in the market for a drop sealer, or if you are just curious how they work, I would like to introduce you to two new models we just added to our site. These are the Preferred Pack PP615-402 (found here) and the PP620-405 (found here). I would like to cover exactly what these machines do and include a video.

Gravity drop conveyors are special packaging machines that use gravity to help package products in a bag. In a nutshell, a product is placed in a bag, then sealed and finally dropped into a catch tray or bin. This process is repeated over and over as products are packaged throughout the day.

The new Preferred Pack drop sealers we just added take this process a step further by automating much of it. Our drop sealers include the addition of a bag opener, to help facilitate the packaging process. The bag sealer takes a bag from the top of a stack and opens it using forced air. A product is then inserted into this bag where it is slid down a gravity slide. Special holding pins help prevent the bag from sliding the rest of the way down. A sealing jaw then seals the bag shut and cuts off excess plastic. These machines then use a burst of air to clear off the excess plastic, after which the holding pins are released, allowing the bag to continue its journey into a catch tray.

Here is a video demo of one of these new drop sealers in action with tortillas:

As you can see the process has been streamlined and is remarkably easy to do. This is a must have tool if you are packaging a lot of food (or non-food) items on a daily basis. The packaging is extremely professional and the end results (including the seal) hold up well with handling.

We currently offer two different versions of this drop sealer on our site. These include:

  • Preferred Pack PP615-402 (found here) – This version of the drop sealer includes the bag opener and includes a sealer that can be used with bags up to 15″ wide. It can be operated at a speed of up to 25 bags per minute. It can be used with a bag up to 10 mil thick.
  • Preferred Pack PP620-405 (found here) – This version of the drop sealer also includes a bag opener and features the ability to seal bags up to 20″ wide. Like the smaller model, this can also be used to package about 25 bags a minute. This model can also be used with packaging bags of up to 10 mil thick.

Both of these gravity drop sealers feature a warranty that guarantees they will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for two years. If you have any questions about these sealers, please feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788. You can find our entire selection of packaging machinery here.

Semacon S-140 Coin Counter & Sorter Review

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Semacon S-140 Coin Counter & SorterIf your business or organization deals with literally thousands of coins on a daily basis, you probably need a coin counting machine (found here) that is fairly heavy duty to keep up with the daily volume. One of the most common errors I find when customers purchase a coin counter is under estimating their volume, which often results in a short lived machine. Using the wrong machine for a large volume of coins will eventually burn out the motor. If your coin counting volume hovers around medium to high-volume amounts, you may want to consider using a coin counter and sorter like the Semacon S-140 (found here)

Before I go into too much detail on the S-140, I would like to go into just a small history of Semacon. Semacon has been around since about 1998 and has built a reputation for making some of the highest quality bill counters and coin counters in the industry. Unlike many competitors, Semacon burns in their machines prior to sale to ensure they will work right out of the box. We have been selling Semacon products for years and I can say that they are easily in my top three favorite brands of money handling equipment manufacturers.

I bring up the history of Semacon prior to this revue because I feel it offers some insight into this particular product. Semacon machines often do cost a little more than the competition, but the quality and manufacturer backing (in my opinion) justifies the slightly higher price. I figure it is better to buy a machine that will last for many years than one that will last for one or two years.

The S-140 is a heavy-duty coin counter and sorter. It is the type of counter you want to have if you bag or roll large volumes of coins. It includes an attachment ring that allows bags to be connected and optional coin tubes can be used for coin rolling. This particular model is very popular with vending machine businesses, car wash businesses, arcades and other businesses that handle thousands of coins a day.

The Semacon S-140 is particularly popular because it is extremely fast, operating at 1,800 coins per minute, and it has a very large tray capacity (4,000 coins based on dime diameter). The S-140 will display the amount of coins counted, the total value and allows for coin batching via a keypad. It includes an offsort bagging attachment and an offsort tray.

Semacon S-140 Coin Roller Tube AttachmentsSo how does this machine work? You will see on the picture that there are two dials. One dial sets the thickness of the coin and the other sets the diameter of the coin. Once these two settings have been adjusted, you can begin sorting and counting. If you are counting quarters, all other denominations will be sent out the side of the machine via the offsort tray or offsort bag. It is designed to count and sort one denomination at a time, which is a must for proper bagging and coin rolling. Once one denomination has been counted, sorted, bagged or rolled, it can be adjusted for the next denomination.

The standard S-140 can be used for counting US pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, 50-cent pieces and dollar coins (1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1 SBA). It can also be used to count other sizes and diameters of coins, tokens, Euros and other coins by adjusting the two dials. A Canadian version of this is also available with pre-defined settings for use with Canadian coins. The diameter variance ranges from 14 to 34mm and the coin thickness variance ranges from 1 to 3.5mm.

We have been selling this machine for some time now and I can vouch for the fact that it is a solid and reliable machine. It has Semacon’s guarantee, which is invaluable, and features a one-year warranty that covers parts, labor and shipping.

Do you still have questions about this coin counter? Please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-658-8788. We would love to help answer your questions. You can find the Semacon S-140 here and our entire selection of coin counters and sorters here.

PTI Wall-Mounted Time Card Rack Review (400-3 & 300-1)

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

PTI 400-3 Plastic Wall Mounted Time Card RackOne of the best ways to keep time cards organized and in check is to use a time card rack. These useful organizational tools come in a variety of shapes and designs, with a vertical alignment being most popular. If your business or organization is in need of a model that is solid, durable and reliable, you may want to check out the PTI 400-3 adjustable time card rack (found here) or the PTI 300-1 time card rack (found here). Here are a few reasons why you may want to consider using one of these for your business.

To begin with, time card racks provide a useful tool for organization. I have personally worked at businesses that used time card racks and others that simply used a drawer. The business that only used a drawer had to deal with missing time cards, frustrated employees and inaccurate payroll. The businesses that used a time card rack dealt with much fewer issues and employees were happy to find their time card in the same place every time.

Both the PTI 400-3 and 300-1 time card racks feature a vertical design that consists of 25 time cards. While it is nice to have an individual slot for each time card, these pockets can fit more than one if needed. Many of our customers, especially those with many employees, will purchase multiple units and mount them on the wall side by side. Both time card racks include all necessary hardware for mounting it to the wall.

PTI 300-1 Wall-Mounted Metal Time Card RackBoth of these time card racks are great options, depending on what you need. The biggest difference between these two racks is that the PTI 400-3 is made from impact resistant plastic and the PTI 300-1 is made from metal. Both hold up remarkably well in a business environment.

The PTI 400-3 is made from heavy-duty industrial plastic that is designed to hold up with daily use. It will not bend, chip or dent. Because it is plastic, you don’t need to worry about sharp edges or rust. The pockets will hold cards that range in width from 2.5″ to 5′ and in height up to 2.25″ to 10″. This time card rack is easy to adjust to your time card size.

The PTI 300-1 is made from powder coated metal. It has a nice smooth charcoal gray finish. It can accommodate time cards ranging in size from 4″ wide up to 9″ tall. This heavy-duty time card rack is ideal for industrial environments where it will experience heavy usage on a daily basis.

PTI makes time clocks and time cards, so it should probably come as no surprise that both of these racks are some of the best single column time card racks you can buy. As mentioned earlier, they can easily be mounted side-by-side for larger businesses and for situations where multiple pockets are needed.

You can find our entire selection of time card racks here and time clocks here. Please give us a call at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions. Thank you for reading.

Akiles CardMac Business Card Cutter Review

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

Akiles CardMac Business Card Slitter & CutterHave you ever wanted to create your own in-house business cards, but didn’t quite know where to start? The process is remarkably easy. All you need is a template for your computer, a printer and a business card cutter to finish the job. The business card making process is remarkably fast and is an effective method for individuals and small businesses to create their own cards. One line of machines you should consider using is the CardMac from Akiles (found here). There are four different versions to choose from.

Before you pick a business card cutter (aka slitter), you will need to answer two questions. First off, do you need a full bleed business card cutter and secondly do you want the machine to be manual or electric. I would like to go into more details on what a full bleed is.

Full Bleed Business Card – If you want color on your entire business card, from edge to edge, you are going to need a business card cutter that can cut out your cards without any white margin showing. Full bleed business cards use a special gutter cut template that allows bleeding of color over the edges, allowing for edge-to-edge color. The template for a full-bleed card is more complex than a standard business card template and requires a business card cutter capable of trimming out the cards. You cannot effectively create full bleed business cards with a standard no-bleed business card cutter.

No Bleed Business Cards – These are your more traditional business cards and feature a template with a mostly-white background. These business cards usually feature a logo, a name, some text and some contact information. They can feature rich colors, but don’t rely on the ability or need to print color all the way to the edge of the card.

Full Bleed Busienss Card Using Gutter Cut Pattern & Standard Business Card Pattern

So as mentioned before, Akiles offers four different CardMac business card cutters. Two are electric, two are full bleed and two are no bleed. I would like to cover each of these four models in some detail.

MANUAL AKILES CARDMAC

  • Akiles CardMac ACM-NB No Bleed Business Manual Card Cutter (found here) – This is a manual business card slitter that features the ability to cut cards by either turning a hand crank or a dial (both included). This cutter is designed for use with no bleed business cards using a 12-up business card template pattern. Simply print your cards, insert them into the feed tray and start turning the handle. This business card cutter requires two passes to create the cards. This can be later upgraded to an electric machine.
  • Akiles CardMac ACM-B Bleed Business Manual Card Cutter (found here) – This is almost the same as the above-mentioned machine, but uses a cutting pattern designed to handle full bleed business cards. It can be used with paper up to 0.3mm thick (12 mil). This machine uses a 10-up business card pattern. Like the ACM-NB, this machine can also be upgraded to an electric unit. The finished card size is 2″ x 3.5″.

ELECTRIC AKILES CARDMAC

  • Akiles CardMac ACM-EB / ACM-ENB Electric Business Card SlitterAkiles CardMac ACM-ENB No Bleed Electric Business Card Cutter (found here) – If you need a little added speed and a little less manual involvement, the ACM-ENB electric business card slitter is a great option. This cutter is designed for use with no bleed business cards and features a 12-up cutting pattern. Like the manual versions of these cutters, this model still requires two passes of the card. This is pretty much the same as the ACM-NB, but with the optional electric motor already attached.
  • Akiles CardMac ACM-EB Bleed Electric Business Card Cutter (found here) – If you need a full bleed electric business card cutter, the ACM-EB is the model you will need. This Akiles CardMac has a motor attached to the side. Load up your 10-up pattern full bleed business cards into the slitter and let the sheet run through (vertically). Then take those and run them through the machine again to finish the business card process. This equals out to be about 60 cards per minute.

The only real weakness I have found with these business card cutters is that they use friction to pull paper into the machine for cutting. This is excellent when cutting standard finish paper and card stock, but may cause some slippage with glossy or coated paper.

If you have additional questions about these machines, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. You can find our entire selection of business card cutters and slitters here.

Lassco CR-55 2″ Corner Rounder & Cutter Review

Friday, April 5th, 2013

Lassco CR-55 Corner Rounder & CutterLassco is known for making some of the finest corner rounders available under the brand Cornerounder (made in the USA). Their machines are the most popular because the can be used to cut a lot of paper and the dies are interchangeable, eliminating the need to purchase multiple machines. One of Lassco’s most recent machines is the CR-55 corner cutter (found here). This new machine goes in a different direction than the older Cornerounders. So is this machine for you?

If you have used a corner rounder like the CR-20 or CR-50, both of which are excellent machines, you may be familiar with their socket style dies that can be pulled out and inserted to accommodate different radii patterns. While the CR-55 does allow different radii patterns, the cutting unit is completely different. This design change was needed to accommodate a larger cutting capacity. Most Lassco Cornerounder machines have a ½” cutting capacity. The CR-55 has a huge 2″ cutting capacity.

Lassco CR-55 Radii Blade Die Set #1Rather than using a socket style cutting die, the CR-55 uses a special die set that consists of a die and a couple of blades. The die is mounted to the base of the cutter’s table. The cutting blade is mounted to the moving mechanism that is pressed down on the paper. The ¼” die can be mounted 180 degrees to accommodate a 3/8″ radius. The ½” die can also be flipped around to accommodate a 1/8″ radius. Because of the way the die and blade are designed, the blades are sold in sets. Radius set one includes a ¼” & 3/8″ die and blade. The radius set two has a ½” and 1/8″ die and blade.

The CR-55 cutting unit is set in a floor design that 43″ high, making it easy to use by most people. This design also frees up desk and table space. The table area measures in at 20″ x 20″, which is amble room to accommodate both small and large sheets of paper. Large paper guides, leading up to the cutting blade, make it extremely easy to align paper. Because the guides are set at about 2″ high, this also makes it easy to jog the paper into place. A CR55-PB is an optional wood paper alignment tool that can be used to further job the paper into place.

Using the CR-55 is extremely easy. Once the correct die has been mounted and the paper is in place, simply press down on the foot pedal to bring down the cutting blade. Lassco has designed this cutter to make cutting exceptionally easy with little pressure. The foot pedal design allows you to use your own weight to depress the pedal while freeing up hands for quickly removing and re-adding more paper.

Due to its durable design, the CR-55 is excellent for repeated use throughout the day. People use this corner rounder for cutting the corners off of playing cards, business cards, greeting cards and other paper material. It can be used for cutting through standard paper or for cutting through plastic sheets, including laminated paper and poly covers.

If you have any questions about this corner rounder, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. You can find the Lassco CR-55 corner cutter here. You can find our entire selection of corner rounders here.
