LWS-1 Roll Laminator Cart & Workstation Stand Review

LWS-1 Roll Laminator Cart & Workstation StandI normally only write reviews on machines, but I felt the LWS-1 laminator cart (found here) warranted a review. It has been around for decades and is currently one of the top choices schools, businesses, copy shops and other organizations use for holding their laminator. This warrants the question, “Is the LWS-1 something that I really need in my office?” I would like to answer that question and more in this article.

Roll laminators (found here) are heavy machines. Even the smaller 25” and 27” models still weigh a hefty amount. This creates a couple of problems. First off, a heavy laminator is hard to move around. If you’re in a classroom / school setting, and you need to shuffle and move equipment around on a regular basis, this poses a very big problem.

The second problem is that not all tables and desks are able to support a lot of weight, especially considering many of these laminators weigh in excess of 50 or more pounds. Desks and tables are also large, awkward and can be difficult to maneuver around. A cart makes a laminator easy to access from most angles.

This is where a laminator cart comes into play. The LWS-1 is a laminator cart designed to be used with 27” wide or smaller laminators. It is sometimes called the Tamerica LWS-1 or the HOP LWS-1.  It can support a roll laminator up to 110 pounds and it sits on four casters, making it possible to move a laminator around a room. This card isn’t flimsy like many carts out there. You don’t need to worry about the cart tipping over or causing safety problems like you find with many cheaper laminators.

I have used the LWS-1 laminator cart. We have used it to hold the Ledco Educator and the Easy Lam 27” laminator. In both of these situations, it supported and held the laminator without a problem. The legs that support the table on the LWS-1 is really tough made from a durable metal frame.

The table that sits on top of the frame is also extremely tough. The base of the frame features four plastic guard bumpers that prevent the card from running into and causing damage with walls and office furniture. The cart measures in at 42”L x 26”D x 29 ½”W.

A feature I especially like is the roll film holder and finished product holder. The film holder can be used to hold rolls of lamination film up to 27” wide, making it easy to change out film in a moments notice. A flat slanted basket on the other side of the laminator can be used to hold finished lamination projects or additional supplies.

Overall I would have to say that this cart is the best out there for a laminator up to 27” wide and under 110 pounds. It is mobile, easy to work around and is much nicer to use versus a table or desk. To this day we still use one of these carts out on our own showroom floor.

Three Affordable Options for Packaging Your Own Cds or Dvds

CD & DVD Shrink Wrap Packaging MachinesHave you ever thought about packaging your own CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays or video game cases, but never really knew where to start? It isn’t really that hard and most packaging processes take just a few seconds. There are many different options out there with some of them being affordable enough to do in your own home. This is primarily done using a process called shrink wrap (found here). Machine options range from entry-level units to high-end machines.

Shrink wrapping is actually a very simple process. A product is placed in some sort of film pocket or sleeve, the open ends are sealed shut and heat is run over the plastic. Shrink wrap film is made from a thermoplastic material, so when heat is run over it the film begins to contract. This process is what creates a clear stretched film over CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays that you buy in the store.

As mentioned earlier, machines for shrink wrapping media material come in a variety of sizes. Some are designed for packaging a few dozen to a few hundred a day, where some of the larger systems are designed to package thousands to tens of thousands a day. I would like to point out some of the most affordable machines in an effort to help you get the most for your money.

Sealer Sales SWK-8-04 Heat Sealer (found here) – These kits consist of thermoplastic shrink bags (500 total), a heat sealer (used for sealing the open ends) and a high-end heat gun that is used for shrinking down the film. These kits are available for less than $100 and can be used for home or small business packaging needs.

AIE I-Bar Sealers (found here) – These machines are very versatile and can be used for packaging CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and other stuff as well. These machines use what’s known in the packaging industry as centerfold film. Basically it is a long sheet of film that has been folded in half and rolled up. Because the film is folded in half, a pocket is formed. The width of the film is determined by the roll, but the length can be set by the operator.

Once the product is inserted into the centerfold film, the open ends are sealed shut using the I-bar. The film can then be quickly shrunk down using the included heat gun. This particular machine includes a 500-foot roll of centerfold film.

Truline TP-48ST Shrink Wrap System (found here) – If you need to increase your packaging speed, you may want to consider using a shrink wrap system. These machines are designed to package several hundred to thousand products a day. The TP-48ST is an L-bar sealer, which means it seals all open sides on a centerfold roll of film in a single pass. It also includes an integrated heat tunnel that seals and shrinks the film in a single pass. This model can be used with a standard wall outlet, which means no special power requirements are needed.

These are three solid options that I recommend you consider when packaging CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays or video game cases. The seal is extremely durable, provides tamper proof packaging and is very professional. How Does a Binding Machine Work?

Book Binding MachinesHave you ever toyed around with the idea of binding your own book? Have you ever wondered exactly how a book binding machine works? Having used binding machines (found here) for well over a decade, I can safely tell you that anyone can use one. I would like to cover exactly how a binding machine works and what all is involved in the binding process. Read on for more information.

Book binding machines come in all shapes and sizes, but when all is said and done, they all work on a very similar way. The three most commonly used binding formats are comb, wire and coil. Many people also like using VeloBind. Each of these binding formats are designed to hold multiple pieces of paper together using a binding element. The binding element is much like a staple, but one that goes along the entire edge of the paper to create a book.

Most binding machines operate in a matter of just 4 steps.

  • Step 1 – The first thing you’ll want to do is set up your machine. This usually adjusting the side margin control to ensure the holes are punching where they should. I personally like to take a single sheet of paper and punch it to ensure everything is set up and operating correctly. If the holes are off, I make further adjustments.
  • Step 2 – Once the machine is set up, you will begin to punch holes in the paper you wish to bind. The amount of paper a machine can bind can range anywhere from 5 to 40 or more sheets, depending on the machine. Binding your book may require multiple passes of the punch depending on how thick you want your book to be.
  • Step 3 – Once all of the holes are punched, you can begin inserting the binding element into the holes. With comb this involves using a comb opener to open the comb for insertion. With wire you will manually insert the twin loop through the holes. With coil you will spin the spring-like elements through the punched holes.
  • Step 4 – Once the element has been inserted through the hole, you will need to finalize the book. With comb this involves closing the comb. With wire this involves closing the wire. With coil this involves cutting off the excess coil and crimping the ends.

As you can see, the binding process is extremely easy. Most people can bind a ¼” thick book in a matter of a minute or two. Most machines can be used to bind a book anywhere from a few pages up to an inch or so.

Binding machines come in a variety of different configurations depending on the volume you intend to bind on a daily basis. Features that may speed up the process including things like an electric motor (versus manual) for punching the paper.

Here are a few additional features you may want to consider when buying a binding machine:

  • Disengageable Dies – If you have ever used a binding machine, you may have run into the issue of a half-punched hole at the edge of the paper. While this can often be fixed by adjusting the side margin guide, sometimes the size of the paper makes this very difficult. Machines that use disengageable dies (aka selectable punching pins) allow you to choose which holes punch or don’t punch. If you are running into half-punched holes, you can simply disable that die to prevent that from happening.
  • Adjustable Margin Depth – If you are punching books of varying thicknesses, you may want to consider using a machine with an adjustable margin depth. This allows you to select how far into the paper the holes are punched. People binding thicker books often need to punch a little farther into the paper to prevent the pages from accidentally tearing out.
  • Diameter Selector Tool – Matching the binding element with the size of the book you want to bind can be a tricky thing to do. Many binding machines now come with a diameter selector tool that makes it easy to determine the size of the supply you need based on the amount of pages you are binding.

How Do Induction Cap Sealers Work?

Induction Cap Sealers / Foil Lid Sealing MachinesWe recently added a couple new induction cap sealers to our site (found here). While I was familiar with what they did, I didn’t really understand how the technology worked. These sealers are the machines that place the protective foil seal to the top of bottles. This includes such products as food, cosmetics and much more. After having thoroughly researched this, I would like to share with you exactly how these machines work.

Induction cap sealers are used with just about every consumable product you use. These sealers produce a tamper proof seal that helps preserve freshness, prevent leaks, provide tamper evidence, helps with pilferage protection and extend shelf life. You may have seen a sign on the top of these seals that says something to the effect, “Do not use if seal is broken”. The technology used to apply these seals is remarkably clever and efficient.

Induction Foil Bottle SealThe seal they apply to the opening of a glass or plastic container is usually made out of a foil barrier, although other materials can be used. The foil consists of a few layers of laminated products and uses a sealing resin or a polymer to produce the seal. This results in a very sturdy and durable seal that won’t break or fall off.

It’s amazing how much these seals are used in products we handle every day. Just this week I changed the oil on my car and the quart bottles each had a foil seal. The yogurt I ate this morning had a foil seal. I even opened up a new bottle of ketchup this week and it too had an induction sealed foil cap.

So how does this technology work? It is remarkably simple and there are no moving parts during any part of the sealing process. The first step involved is to insert a seal into the lid of the product being sealed. This can be manually done or automatic, depending on the packaging system being used. Once the lid is screwed on (manually or automatic), the bottle is run under an induction sealer.

The induction sealer uses electrical current run through induction coils to produce a strong electromagnetic field. This field causes the foil to heat up, which in turn causes the membrane (using sealing resin or polymer) to seal to the top of the bottle. The process is extremely fast, usually only taking a few seconds. Because an electrometric is used, you should only use this type of sealing process with plastic or glass containers. Do not use this with metal containers.

Example of Induction Foil Cap Seal on BottleInduction cap sealers range in size from tabletop units to full blown automatic production-level machines. At ABC Office we offer semi-automated. We currently offer two models, but expect this to increase. Here are the two models currently offered on our site:

  • AF-500W Induction Cap Sealer (found here) – This particular model is designed to be used with containers that have a diameter opening ranging from 15mm up to 120mm. The height of the sealer can be adjusted to accommodate the bottle being sealed. Simply place your bottle on the platform, press the foot pedal and in just a few seconds the process is complete.
  • CS-501 Induction Cap Sealer (found here) – This induction sealer is very similar to the AF-500W, but is more robust. Instead of a 500-watt power supply, this one has an 1100 watt power supply. It also includes the addition of a cap sealer, which will automatically screw on the cap and inductively seal the membrane to the container’s opening.

Our induction bottle cap sealers are designed to seal the foil membrane without any scorching and zero leaks. They can even apply a seal to the lid of small amounts of liquid or powder are on the rim of the bottle. These sealers are tough, designed to be used on a daily basis. They also have a small footprint and don’t require any special training to use.

Office Equipment Made in the USAThere is a growing trend in the United States right now of people looking for office equipment made in the USA. This is driven by a sense of national pride and a desire to help bolster the local economy. At ABC Office (found here) we actually offer a really nice selection of products that are made in the USA. Many of these products are actually some of the highest quality and best supported that we offer.

Before I go too much further into our American-made products at ABC Office, I would just like to say that we offer many fine pieces of equipment that aren’t made in the USA. To my friends outside the US, it should be known that my favorite paper cutters and shredders are made in Germany. The point of this article, however, is to help people in the US find American-made products for the sake of supporting American companies.

What I would like to do is list off some of our most popular manufacturers and their products that are made in the USA.

  • Formax (found here) – Formax manufactures a lot of their products in the United Sates. This includes their lines of pressure sealers, bursters, decollators, paper folding machines, mail tabbers and booklet makers. Few manufactures have this much of their product line made in America.   • Traco (found here) – Traco I-bar sealers and L-bar shrink wrap machines are all manufactured in the United States. Traco is by far one of the most popular I-bar shrink wrap machines around.
  • Amerishred (found here) – As the name implies, these paper shredders are all made in the USA. The Amerishred line of shredders are designed for commercial and industrial shredding applications with many of their designs capable of shredding hundreds of sheets of paper at a time.

It’s nice to see that there is still a lot of high quality office equipment made in the USA still available. This list is up to date as of July 2013. Do You Need a Stand with Your Stack Paper Cutter?

Paper Cutter StandsWhen shopping around for a stack paper cutter (found here), you may have noticed that many of the machines out there have the option of a stand. Some cutters even include one. Many customers ask me if a stand is truly necessary. There are certainly a few things to take into consideration before making the decision to purchase a stand. I would like to cover a few of those points.

Stack paper cutters are used to cut and trim large volumes of paper at a time. While these cutters are sometimes used in the office, they are often used on printing floors, warehouses and more. These cutters are the workhorses of the cutting industry and are the cutters used to cut larger stock down to smaller for retail sale and for trimming prints down to specification. Stack cutters range in size and complexity, depending on what is being cut, the types of cuts required and how often the cutter will be used.

These cutters range in weight. On the light end, these cutters are 75 to 100 pounds. In the medium spectrum they can be 200 to 500 pounds. On the heavy end, many of these cutters weight in excess of 1,000 pounds. The lighter cutters are usually manually operating, medium weight cutters are electrically powered and heavy cutters are hydraulic. Most heavy high-end cutters include a stand. The decision on purchasing a stand is usually a factor with manual stack cutters and many electric.

Now that you have a better idea of the weight, you can better understand where a stand may come into play. Some people like to use their stack cutters on a table, workbench or counter. The thing you need to consider is if the table or surface you are using can support the weight of the cutter. On the lighter end, many can. If your table can’t support the weight, a cutting stand is probably going to be a must-have accessory.

Cutting stands are designed specifically for the cutter they are supposed to be used with and thus are designed to provide more than adequate support. They are engineered to also look great and compliment the cutter they are used with. Setting up these stands is usually very easy and they typically ship in a flat box. I have set up these stands in less than 30 minutes.

While weight is certainly a factor to be considered when purchasing a stand, let’s not forget about convenience. A stand takes up the same footprint as the cutter. This means you can easily walk around the cutter and handle it from most angles. A counter or desk can often produce obstacles that make paper cutting more difficult.

Once the stand is set up, you will need to lift and place the cutter on the stand. I recommend this be done by about five people (one on each corner). You can get away with less if it a lighter cutter. Just make sure the paper cutter is properly supported and that someone is able to look from below to see if the points are lining up before the cutter is properly fixed to the base. I don’t recommend the “spotter” be directly under the cutter as this could potentially be dangerous if the cutter is dropped.

Destroyit 4002 Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

Destroyit 4002 Cross Cut Paper ShredderI just spoke to a guy on the phone today who was commenting to me about how much he hates to wait for his shredder to cool down every 20 minutes before he can use it again. Unfortunately this person had purchased a paper shredder that was woefully inadequate for his needs. If your office is in need of a solid departmental-level paper shredder, the Destroyit 4002 (found here) is an excellent option. We actually have one of these shredders in our building here at ABC Office and I have used it on many occasions. I would like to share my feedback and experiences with you.

The very customer I spoke about earlier continued on to ask me which paper shredder brand I would personally recommend. I explained to this customer that one of my personal favorite lines is the Destroyit line. He then said, “What makes this shredder any better than the others out there?” I went on to explain that Destroyit paper shredders are German engineered and German built, which gives them a huge leg up on many other brands. To be frank, German paper shredders are the pinnacle of the paper shredding industry.

The Destroyit 4002 is a departmental paper shredder to its core and is one of my personal favorites for use in an office by several people throughout the day. It uses a thermally protected motor that allows it to run all day without overheating. The cross cut version, which I have personally used, can shred anywhere from 24-26 sheets of paper at a time, which is more than adequate for most businesses. The 1 ¾ horsepower motor doesn’t stutter and shreds the paper at a speed of 25 feet per minute into 3/16” x 1 ½” particles. This particular shredder is a Level 3 (P-4 on the new scale).

Because this shredder is designed to be used throughout the day, it comes equipped with a massive 44-gallon shred bin. I have personally shredded boxes of material in a single sitting with this shredder without filling the bag. I LOVE not having to continually empty this shredder over and over again. It can be used to shred paper, credit cards and CDs. Be cause it is built with hardened steel cutting shafts, it also accepts staples and paper clips without missing a beat. After an hour of inactivity, it will go into an energy saving mode.

One thing I really like about this shredder is how quiet it is. Cross cut shredding paper requires a lot of cutting and effort on the part of the shredder. Many comparable models out there sound like a lawn mower or a wood chipper. Nobody wants to hear that grinding / whirring noise in the office. This shredder is comfortably quiet. Having used it many times, I really think you could use this right next to a group of professionals in the office without annoying them.

You can’t jam this shredder, which I love. While it shreds 24-26 sheets of paper at a time, who is going to sit around and count out each sheet? This shredder can detect the stress being put on the motor. If it is fed over capacity, it will stop and back out the paper rather than continue to run (which burns the motor out on other ill equipped shredders).

The control panel on the Destroyit 4002 is as simple as a round rocking button. Tilt it forward to turn it on and tilt it forward again to turn it off. Tilt it back to put the shredder into reverse. LED lights built into the button will also alert you when the shredder is full, door is open and more. The wide 16” throat on this shredder includes a safety shield which prevents dangerous access to the shredding blades. To top it all off, this shredder rests on casters, making it easy to wheel around the office.

I love this shredder. Can you tell by my review? You will not be disappointed with this shredder in an office setting. It really is that good.

Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 Pressure Sealer Product Review

Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 Pressure SealerWhen it comes to single sheet mailing, there are few methods as affordable, professional and effective as a pressure sealer. These remarkable machines use special pressure seal paper to quickly fold and seal mail shut, eliminating the need to use envelopes and creating a tamper-proof piece of mail that can be used for invoices, checks, W-2s, PIN numbers, billing purposes and much more. One such machine is the Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 (found here). This is my review.

There are a lot of manufacturers out there who make pressure sealers, but none (in my opinion) come close to the quality that you will find in a Formax brand machine. Formax manufactures a dozen different pressure sealers and they are very well known for their envelope inserters, paper folding machines and paper shredders. Their machines are designed for serious professional use in a business environment and are excellent for daily operations.

The Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 is a desktop pressure sealer designed to fold and seal up to about 8,000 pieces of mail per hour with a monthly duty cycle of 50,000 pieces. This machine uses pressure seal paper, which has tiny pockets of glue around the edges. When run through this machine, those pockets of glue are burst open, causing the form to self seal. The seal is permanent and the only way to access the mail’s contents is to tear off the perorated edges.

The pressure seal forms (found here) and checks (found here) are tamper proof. That means there is no way to access the contents without obvious signs of tampering. I personally like the fact that no envelope is needed. The form is completely self-contained, is USPS approved and can be easily mailed out. You have probably received these types of forms in the mail in the form of a check, PIN number, statement or other type of mailer.

The FD 2002 is a mid-level machine from Formax. It is best used for light to medium-volume use. It features a drop-in style feed tray that can hold up to 250 pressure seal forms at a time. It can be used to handle pressure seal checks and forms up to 14” long. It is set up and used much like a standard paper folding machine.

This machine uses two feed trays that must be manually set in order to accommodate the desired fold. While they are manually set, they are very easy to adjust. I have also found that most businesses only require one or two types of folds, so usually once the plates are set they don’t need to be re-adjusted. This machine can create a C, Z, V, uneven C, uneven Z and several custom folds. A sound-dampening shield covers both of the fold plates. The sound cover can easily be lifted up, allowing access to the plates.

The control panel on this pressure sealer is extremely easy to use and a series of LED lights let you know when the power is on, cover is open, if the paper runs out and if a fault has occurred. Buttons let you start the machine, stop it and test samples.

You can buy this pressure sealer in two different configurations. You can buy it as the standard desktop version or with an exit conveyor and cabinet.

Clear Stand Up Zip Lock Pouches Now Available

Clear Stand Up Ziplock Pouches & BagsIf you’ve been to the grocery store and have purchase a bag of beef jerky, trail mix, dehydrated fruit or nuts, you have probably noticed that many of the packages now include a ziplock style opening on the top that makes the bag easy to open and close. This is an excellent addition to packaging, helps keep things fresh and eliminates the need to use a twist tie. At ABC Office we have just added those very same stand up zip lock pouches (found here) to package your own food products.

These new stand up pouches work very similarly to other bag sealer bags. It essentially ships as a flat bag with an open top. When expanded, the bag is then able to stand up thanks to a gusset bottom. Nuts, cookies, candies and other food items can then be placed in the after which the bag can be sealed shut using a heat sealer (found here). The entire process is extremely simple and best of all it can be done by just about anyone. A sealed zip lock is included on the bag, providing access to the contents by the consumer.

Right now we offer ten different sizes of bags. This includes five OPP / CPP bags and then five PET / CPP (Y Version) bags that are freezer safe. The mil thickness of the plastic used gets thicker as the bag gets bigger. Mil thickness ranges anywhere from 4 mil to 13 mil thick, again depending on the size of the bag. Our smallest bag measures in at 4” x 6” x 2.5” and our largest bag measures in at 7” x 12” x 4” (Height x Width x Gusset). These bags are the perfect sizes for snacks.

The plastic used in these bags is FDA approved for use with food and is manufactured in a multilayer barrier design to help ensure durability. These bags will stand straight up when placed on a shelf. These bags are completely clear, making the contents easy to see. Options for Folding Packing Slips & Lists

Packing List Evenlope SleeveIf your business ships products out of a warehouse on a daily basis, you are probably familiar with packing slips. These slips of paper typically include an address, a list of items shipped and other pertinent pieces of information.  These are sometimes placed in the box and other times are inserted into an adhesive plastic bag and stuck to a box. Regardless of the type of packing slip you use, you probably want it to look professional. Paper folding machines (found here) offer a professional and effective way to do just that.

As mentioned earlier, packing slips typically included on the outside or inside of the box being shipped. This is often for the warehouse to ensure everything has been properly packaged and also for the customer to see that everything was shipped at the right price. When it comes to folding these, I have seen several different types of folds used. The type of fold depends on the way thePacking Slip / List Folding Machines business or organization does things.

While there are sophisticated machines out there that interface directly with a laser printer, fold the packing slip and insert it into a bag, many small or medium-size businesses don’t need something that sophisticated or on that large a scale. This is where a paper-folding machine is a great option. Paper folding machines can be used to fold a few dozen to a few hundred (or more) packing slips a day.

There are three very common folds used for packing slips.

Letter Fold / C FoldLetter Fold – A letter fold (aka C fold) is THE most common fold used today. This fold consists of three equal panels and two folding points. When used on letter-size paper, the fold ends up being about 8 ½” x 3.6”. A packing list folded like this can be easily placed in a box and is sometimes placed in a larger packing envelope sleeve.

Cross Fold – A cross fold (aka French Fold) consists of a sheet of paper that has been half or letter folded and then folded in half again. This makes the sheet of paper very small. This is what most businesses do when using 5.5” x 7” packing list envelopes. Not all paper folding machines can create a cross fold, so be sure to check before purchasing a machine.

Cross Fold / French FoldManual Cross Fold – A manual cross fold involves creating a letter fold on a paper folding machine and then manually folding it in half again. This is probably one of the most affordable ways to create a cross fold. You can purchase a cheaper machine that can’t do a cross fold and then manually finish the job. The end results still look very professional.

In each of these scenarios the paper-folding machine is used to fold the paper and the slip is then manually inserted into the plastic sleeve envelope or placed in a box. The plastic sleeves are usually 5.5” x 7” in size although some people use larger sleeves that eliminate the need for a cross fold.
