Semacon S-1100 Bill Counter Review

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Semacon S-1100 Bill CounterDo you count, handle or keep tabs of bills on a regular basis? Are human counting errors costing your business money? It sounds like you need to upgrade to a bill counting machine. They are relatively cheap and can potentially save you a lot of time and money. One great model you may want to consider using is the Semacon S-1100 bill counter. This is my review.

While Semacon bill counters aren’t considered to be the cheapest machines on the market, they are considered to be some of the best quality bill counters around. Semacon makes several different bill counters, coin counters and other money handling machines.

The Semacon S-1100 bill counter is available in three different versions. You can get it as the standard S-1100, the S-1115 UV CF (ultraviolet counterfeit detection) or the S-1125 UV-MG CF  (ultraviolet and magnetic counterfeit detection). All three models work the same other than the counterfeit detection capabilities you get with the S-1115 and S-1125.

Using the Semacon S-1100 bill counter is easy and requires very little training. Simply plug in the machine, insert your bills and tell the machine to start counting. Sure there are some additional features that you may want to use as well, but it really is that easy.

The S-1100 is especially known for its ability to handle used and worn bills that often put other bill counters on the fritz. It also has chain note, half note and double not detection capabilities.

Unlike many bill counters that are made from cheap components, the S-1100 is made from high quality material. It even has a one-year warranty to bask that up. The warranty includes coverage on parts, labor and shipping. Semacon is a very nice company to work with.

The hopper on the S-1100, S-1115 and S-1125 can hold up to 100 new or 200 used bills. It can also be used to count foreign currencies, tickets, checks and paper. Just be sure the dimensions of the bill or paper you are counting fits within the minimum and maximum specifications (100 mm x 50 mm to 175 mm x 100 mm).

The Semacon S-1100 looks great, fits in well with existing office equipment and even includes a convenient dust cover when not in use. It is very easy to pick up and move around the office or store.

This particular unit is primarily designed for use in smaller banks and credit unions, but can also be used in retail stores, grocery stores, casinos, clubs and much more.

I personally really like Semacon and their line of products, including the S-1100, S-1115 and S-1125. I have no problem recommending this machine for low to medium-volume use.

Cassida 2200 Counterfeit Bill Detector & Scanner Review

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Cassida 2200 Counterfeit Bill Detector & ScannerThere are few things that can drop your spirits faster than discovering you’ve been duped by a fake bill.  Let’s face it, counterfeiters are getting better. Fake bills are harder to tell apart and methods that used to detect bills 10+ years ago aren’t catching everything. If you run or operate a business, you probably need a counterfeit bill detector. One solid model you should consider using is the Cassida 2200 counterfeit bill detector & scanner. This is my review.

Cassida is well versed in money handling. They currently manufacture several different models of bill counters and coin counters. It should come as no surprise, with their years of experience, that Cassida would also make several reliable counterfeit detectors.

The Cassida 2200 counterfeit bill detector is designed for low to medium-volume use. While manual effort is involved to use the 2200, built-in technology cuts down on human error. When used correctly, the Cassida 2200 should catch just about any counterfeit bill out there.

The Model 2200 utilizes several different detection technologies. This includes infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), watermark (WM) and magnetic (MG) detection technologies. With the ability to combine all these different technologies, counterfeit bills don’t stand a chance.

The Cassida 2200 has a relatively small footprint, allowing it to be used at most desks and workstations. It only weighs in at 3 pounds, allowing it to be easily moved from one place to another.

The control interface on the Model 2200 is extremely easy to use and very little training is required to use this machine. Once it is up and running, it shouldn’t take more than a minute (at most) to determine a bill’s authenticity.

Using the Cassida 2200 is easy. Simply place a bill on the work surface. Once in place, a bill can be scanned using infrared detection technology. An IR image of the bill is sent to the build in monitor, highlighting the bill’s characteristics. This makes it easy to quickly point out counterfeit bills at a glance. Few modern counterfeit detectors feature infrared scanning technology.

As previously mentioned, the 2200 also has IR and WM technology. If you’re not satisfied with the IR scan, you can scan the bill for fluorescent UV marks and watermark properties. The UV and WM detectors are also great for checking the validity of checks, credit cards, ID card and more. UV scanning is done by a black light under the hood of the 2200 and the WM backlight is located on the base of the 2200.

The Cassida 2200 can also scan the magnetic ink properties of bills. This is done by rubbing the bill on a magnetic ink scanner located on the base of the 2200.

Overall the Cassida 2200 is very thorough. It implements the latest in counterfeit technology and is a must-have machine for low to medium-volume bill scanning. I feel confident in recommending this machine for use in most retail environments.

You can find the Cassida 2200 counterfeit bill detector & scanner here and our entire selection of counterfeit bill detectors here.

Cassida C100 Coin Counter & Sorter Review

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Cassida C100 Coin Counter & SorterIf you run, own or work for a business that handles money on a regular basis, you probably have the need for a reliable and affordable coin counter. With so many models out there, you may be a little overwhelmed. One great machine for low to medium-volume use is the Cassida C100 coin counter & sorter. I have used this machine and this is my review.

There are a lot of garbage coin counters out there. Most of these coin counters are sold for a “great deal” at department stores around the U.S. While these coin counters may be a “great deal,” they typically fall apart in a few months (if you’re lucky enough to get them working at all). The coin counters offered at ABC Office are designed for business use, not hobby use.

Cassida is probably one of the top bill counter manufacturers around. While Cassida is best known for their line of bill counters, they also make a couple of reliable coin counters and sorters.

The Cassida C100 is both a coin counter and sorter, all in one machine. I’ll start off with the sorting capabilities. You will notice in the picture that the C100 has separate trays for each denomination. This makes it possible for the C100 to separate coins and place them in their own respective containers. Included coin tubes make coin wrapping very easy. The C100 will automatically stop and notify you when the bank roll is full.

The bin on top of the C100 can hold up to 1600 coins. While not terribly common with coin sorters, the C100 can sort $1 coins. It can specifically count and sort 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢ and $1 coins. This versatility allows the C100 to handle just about everything in the U.S. market. The C100 is also available in a Canadian version for Canadian denominations.

Not only does the C100 sort coins, but it can also count them. It does this by adding the total quantity of coins. It will provide you with a grand total of coins or a denomination total of coins. The large display will even provide you with the total counted value.

The C100 can also batch count coins (0 to 500). Batch counting can be specifically set for individual denominations. This is especially nice for wrapping coins.

Having used the Cassida C100 myself, I can personally vouch for the easy-of-use. It literally takes a minute or two to get this machine up and running. From my own experience, I can say that the C100 is very accurate. I have run and re-run coins through this machine with accurate results every time.

I feel safe in recommending the Cassida C100 for light to moderate use. I would not recommend it for high-volume use. It operates at a speed of about 250 coins a minute.

You can find the Cassida C100 coin counter & sorter here and our entire selection of coin counting machines here.

Cassida 85 Currency Counter Review

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Cassida Model 85 Currency & Bill CounterA currency counter should be precise, easy-to-use and durable. It should save you money and time by simplifying counting operations. One great machine that can help you with your bill, money and currency counting needs is the Cassida Model 85 currency counter. This is my review.

Cassida is one of the best-known manufacturers of currency counters. They currently manufacture about a dozen different products. This includes currency counters, counterfeit detectors and coin counters.

The Cassida 85 is one of the newest additions to the Cassida lineup. It is available in a base model, a UV (ultraviolet) model and a UV / MG (ultraviolet / magnetic) model. The UV and UV / MG models have counterfeit detection. These models are the Model 85, Model 85 U and Model 85 UM.

The Cassida 85 is a variable speed currency counter. The motor can be adjusted to 3 different settings. This includes 800, 1200 and 1500 bills per minute. This is ideal when counting bills, tickets, paper, checks and other material.

Unlike many currency counters out there, the Cassida 85 has very impressive capacity specs. It has a 1,000 bill hopper capacity and a 300 bill stacker capacity (new bills). Most bill counters are limited to 100.

Not only does the Cassida 85 count bills, it can count bills in a variety of different ways. It can provide you with a running total of bills counted and can batch count bills. Batch counting is great if you are a bank or a retail environment that needs to group or store bills in specific quantities.

The control panel on the Cassida 85 is very easy to use. The buttons are large (for those of us that have fat fingers) and easy to read. The display on the Cassida is large and easy to view.

The Cassida 85 is available with a few different options. You can get it with an optional dust collector or an optional remote customer display.

I feel safe in categorizing the Cassida 85 as a commercial quality machine. It is tough, definitely designed for daily use and is accurate. This is great for banks, retail stores and many other organizations.

You can find the Cassida Model 85 currency counter here and our entire selection of Cassida bill counters here. You can find our entire selection of bill counters here. This includes models from Cassida, Semacon, Ribao, Magner, ABC, Klopp any many more.

How Do Currency Counters Work?

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Automatic Electric Currency CountersCurrency counters, sometimes called bill counters and money counters, are used by banks, retail stores and other organizations to count banknotes. These machines are designed to be extremely accurate. So how does a currency counter actually work? Here are a few details that may help answer that question.

To begin with, all currency counters have a special hopper where bills are placed. The amount of bills that can be placed in the hopper vary. As a general rule, a bill counter can usually accept about half the used bills as it can new bills. If your machine can accept 100 new bills, it will usually accept about 50 used bills.

Most bill counters use some sort wheel or roller to pull money into the machine. The bill counters I have used utilize a rubber wheel that has special groves on it, making it easier to pull the bills in without jamming. Some bill counters require fanning of the bills before they are placed into the machine.

As the bills are pulled into the currency counter, special fanning wheels separate the bills. These fanning wheels look a lot like a circular plastic claw. As these bills are run through the machine, the pass in front of an optical sensor that detects the edge of the bill. As each bill runs past this sensor, it is counted up and added to a final tally.

The entire counting process, from start to finish, takes just milliseconds. Many currency counters can count on average 1,000+ bills per second.

Currency Counters with Ultraviolet and Magnetic Counterfeit DetectionAdditional Features

Some currency counters are now available with optional counterfeit bill detection. This is done by implementing magnetic ink detection (MG) and ultraviolet bill scanning (UV) properties. Both of these technologies catch most counterfeit bills. Currency counters with counterfeit bill scanning technology with utilize MG scanning, UV scanning or both.

Many currency counters now offer the option of batch counting. This means you can tell the machine that you want it to count 10 bills and then stop. This may be for organizational or storage reasons. Once the counter has counted 10 bills, you remove the stack and it begins counting again. The batch amount can be changed by the operator.

Many people don’t realize this, but most currency counters can be used to also count coupons, tickets and other paper. Just be sure the material you are counting fits within the bill counter’s size specifications.

Many customers ask me if currency counters will sort bills or provide the monetary value of the bills counted. The majority of currency counters do not provide you with the value of the money counted. They typically give you the total number of bills counted. If you need a machine that sorts and provides a dollar value of the money counted, you will need a currency discriminator (aka bill discriminator).

You can find our entire selection of currency counting machines here. Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any currency counter questions.

Bill Counters With Dust Extractors, Shields & Filters

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Bill Counter With Dust Extractor & ShieldThere are a log of bill counters out on the market, some of which tout features like dust extractors, shields and filters. So do you really need these special filters to properly count money? I’ll explain why you may or may not want these features.

To begin with, money is dirty. Just think about where it has been. It sits at the bottom of purses, in wallets, on the floor, floating around in a pocket next to who knows what. Money contains germs, dust, trace elements of narcotics and more.

As money runs through a bill counter, particles on the bills can become loosened and become airborne. I have found that this dust can agitate people who suffer from respiratory ailments and allergies. Most people, however, won’t notice much difference.

If you are sensitive to dust, I do highly recommend using a bill counter with either a dust extractor, a shield or a combination of both.

Dust extractors on bill counters are fairly rare, however, manufacturers like Cassida and Semacon both manufacture counters with dust extracting filters.  The Semacon S-1400 series of bill counters are prime examples of machines that combine both dust extractors and shields.

Another great option, that is more common than dust extractors, is a protective shield. Bill counters with shields have a special plastic cover that is pulled down during the counting process. This keeps bill dust from becoming airborne.

I wouldn’t count a bill counter out for not having these features as I don’t personally notice a difference either way, but it is nice to be aware of your options.

You can find our entire selection of bill counters here. Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any bill counter questions.

Ribao CS-10 Electric Coin Counter Review

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Ribao CS-10 Electric Coin CounterDo you handle, count and sort hundreds or even thousands of coins per day? Rather than dealing with a sub-par department store counter, get a commercial-quality coin counting machine like the Ribao CS-10 coin counter. I have had a chance to play around with this machine and this is my review.

To begin with, Ribao has a well-established name in the coin counting community. They manufacture a wide range of coin counters, with the CS-10 being one of their entry-level models. Ribao is known for making high quality and accurate products.

The CS-10 is capable of handling just about any coin counting job. Setting it up is easy. To begin with, the CS-10 has a built in cover that folds open, acting as a coin hopper. This is a pretty cool feature and is great for storage purposes and keeping dust out of the machine. Once the lid is folded open, a couple of coin guides are twisted into place.

If you look at the top of the machines, you will see two dials on the upper right side of the machine. These dials allow you to adjust the machine to accommodate the diameter and width of the coin you need counted. Once set up, you are ready to start counting and sorting coins.

Be aware that the Ribao CS-10 only counts one denomination of coin at a time. Let’s assume you have the machine set up for quarters (25 cents). As the machine sorts through the coins placed in the tray, it will send the quarters to the front of the machine and out the front exit tube. Other coins are sent out the side of the machine into a catch tray or a bag.

You can fit the CS-10 with a tube or with a bag allowing for easy shotgun style coin tube storage or bagging. This is the perfect setup for most businesses. Once you have finished with your quarters, you can adjust the machine for nickels, dimes, pennies and more.

The CS-10 operates at an amazing speed of up to 1,800 coins per minute. This makes it easy to count, sort and store coins throughout the day. It can easily keep up with the counting and sorting needs of most businesses.

A digital display clearly lets you know the total amount of coins counted. Batch counting is also very easy on the CS-10. Simply tell it how many coins you want counted and it will shoot that amount into a bag or coin wrapper, allowing you to then remove and add another container.

Transporting the CS-10 is easy. When the cover is set back into storage mode, a handle on the back of the machine makes it easy to carry around. It weighs in at 20 pounds shipped, so it isn’t too heavy to move from one place to another.

Overall I have to say, of this style, the Ribao CS-10 is one of the most accurate machines we offer. It is easy to set up and the build quality seems to be extremely tough.

You can find the Ribao CS-10 coin counter here. You can find our entire selection of coin counting machines here.

What To Look For In A Bill Counter

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Semacon Bill Counting MachineBill counters make money counting easy. Having counted money by hand and by using a money counting machine, I can safely say that there is no comparison. Bill counters count money at lightening fast speeds. With so many models available, which bill counter should you get? Here are a few tips that should help you with your decision.

To start with, I have come up with a list of common questions that I like to ask our customers. Answers to these questions should help point you in the right direction.

What will you be counting?

  • Will you be counting U.S. bills, Canadian bills, foreign currencies, tickets or coupons? Most off our bill counters can handle and count all of these. What’s most important is to make sure your bill counter’s minimum and maximum specifications can handle the size of material you are counting.

Do you need counterfeit detection capabilities?

  • About half of the bill counters out there are available with counterfeit bill detection capabilities. If you work in a business that may potentially deal with counterfeit bills, you may want to consider this option. Most feature UV (ultraviolet) or MG (magnetic) detection. Many feature both.

How many bills will you be counting per day?

  • The more bills you count per day, the faster a bill counter you will probably need. Most bill counters have a motor speed rating.

Will you be counting new or used money?

  • New bills, by nature, stack more easily. For this reason, most bill counters can only count about half the used bills as they can new. This means if your bill counter can handle 200 new bills, it will probably only be able to handle 100 used bills.

Do you suffer from allergies?

  • Used and old bills often contain dust. As bills are counted, this dust can become airborne. Those with allergies may become agitated with this dust. Some high-end bill counters, like the Semacon S-1400 series,  have a dust reduction and filtration system built in. Some also have a dust shield that can be pulled down while counting.

What is your budget?

  • Bill counters, when compared to other automated office machines, are relatively inexpensive. They can, however, range in price from under $100 to over $1,000. If you need help finding a machine that has the features you need within a specific budget, I recommend calling one of our experts at 1-800-658-8788.

Do you need your bill counter to be portable?

  • If you need portability in your bill counter, you may want one with a built in carrying handle like the ABC 1150. If power isn’t available, we even offer a battery-powered bill counter like the ABC V-30.

Answers to these questions should help you find the right machine. We offer several different models of bill counters here. Having used several machines myself, I can tell you that the ABC line, Semacon, Magner and Cassida counters are solid pieces of machinery.

If you still have questions about bill & money counters, feel free to call one of our knowledgeable reps at 1-800-658-8788. If your money or bill counter is broken, we can repair most bill counters. Call 1-800-658-8788 and ask for extension 129 to get our Service Technician.

High Speed Ticket & Coupon Counters

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

ABC 1150 High Speed Bill & Money CounterDo you need to count a lot of tickets, coupons or other sheets of paper? One way to do this is by hand, but if you need speed, a bill counter may be just what you need. Here are a few tips on using a bill counter for counting coupons or tickets.

To begin with, bill counters are designed to not only handle money, but paper and card stock as well. This is done on purpose. In effect, a bill counter could be considered a paper counter.

What you need to do is look at the minimum and maximum capacities on the bill counter. Let’s take the popular ABC 1150 bill counter as an example.

The ABC 1150 can handle paper as small as 2″ x 4″ or as large as 4″ x 7-1/3″. These dimensions fit the sizes of many coupons and tickets. The ABC 1150 is capable of counting at speeds of up to 1,000 pieces per minute. Try doing that by hand!

We also carry popular bill and money counters from Cassida, Semacon, Magner, Klopp and more. Almost our entire selection of bill counters can be used to count paper, coupons and tickets.

Industrial Paper CountersBill counters are dead on accurate. Technology has been developed to a point that the same stack of bills, paper, tickets or coupons can be run through a machine multiple times with precise results every time.

If you are counting thousands upon thousands of pieces per day on a consistent basis, you may need something a little more robust. We do also sell industrial paper counters.

You can find our entire selection of bill counters here and industrial paper counters here. Good luck and happy counting!
