Stack Paper Cutter Not Cutting Through All The Way

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Stack Paper CuttersAre you having problems getting your stack paper cutter to cut all the way through paper? This can be frustrating, especially when you remove a stack of cut paper out of a machine only to find anywhere from 1-20 sheets of uncut paper. There are 3 primary reasons for this issue.

Having used several different stack paper cutters myself, and speaking with many customers, I have a pretty good idea as to why you may be having problems with your stack paper cutter successfully completing cuts.

  1. Cutting Knife Is Dull – Your problem may be as simple as a dull blade. If this is the case, you can either replace it or sharpen it. I would opt for sharpening the blade first (if possible) as that will save you money.
  2. Cutting Sticks from ABC OfficeCutting Sticks Are Spent – Stack paper cutters use cutting sticks to complete cuts. The blade typically rests in the cutting stick after cutting through paper. If the cutting stick is nicked or damaged, cuts may not complete correctly. Try rotating your cutting stick or replacing it as necessary. You can find many of our cutting sticks here.
  3. Misaligned Cutting Blade - Believe it or not, the majority stack paper cutters have fine-tuned adjustments for properly aligning the horizontal angle and position of the blade. A misaligned blade will cut paper, but will never cut all the paper. If your blade is misaligned, refer to your manual or speak with our Service Technician for help at 1-800-658-8788 x129.

If you are still unable to complete cuts on your stack paper cutter, your machine may be suffering from additional issues. Our Service Technicians repair and fix stack paper cutters every day. Call them at 1-800-658-8788 x129 for help, ideas, parts or servicing on your stack paper cutter.

If you need a new stack paper cutter, we offer a great selection of manual, electric and hydraulic stack paper cutters from Dahle, Triumph, Tamerica, Martin Yale, Intimus and more. You can find our entire selection of stack paper cutters here.

Stack Paper Cutter Safety Tips & Advice

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Electric Stack Paper CuttersStack paper cutters (manual, electric & hydraulic) are powerful machines. They have the force to cut through hundreds of sheets of paper, with many capable of cutting through over 3″ of paper at a time. It should come as no surprise that these machines can cause serious bodily harm if safety precautions are bypassed or are not available. Here are some of the most common safety precautions to look for in your stack paper cutter.

All Stack Paper cutters

  • All stack paper cutters should have protective shielding that prevents manual access to blades during cutting.

Manual Stack Paper Cutters

  • Manual stack paper cutters should require protective shields to be secure and in place before allowing the handle to activate the blade. All manual cutters I am aware of (Triumph, Dahle, Intimus) have this feature.

Electric & Hydraulic Stack Paper Cutters

  • Electric and hydraulic stack cutters should require two hands to activate the cutter. This usually involves two separate buttons on opposite sides of the cutter. Both buttons must be pressed at the same time, requiring two hands, in order to activate the blade.
  • Most electric and hydraulic stack paper cutters also require a key to be inserted and activated prior to use.

Additional Tips

  • Always use great caution when handling and using a stack paper cutter. While most manufacturers try to do everything possible to make these cutters safe, it is still possible to hurt yourself.
  • When conducting blade changes, be sure to use the blade removal tool (usually included with the cutter) and be sure to follow the manual.

On a side note, several years ago I was cutting some paper down into notepads on a Triumph 6550-95 electric stack cutter. I used a jogging block to square up the paper prior to cutting. Thinking everything was ready to go, I activated the cutter. I did not realize that the jogging block was still in the cutter and the blade quickly became lodged into the wooden block.

I opened up the safety shield and started trying to manually dislodge the jogging block. I was unable to remove it and the blade would not retract. I grabbed our Service Technician and had him look at it.

He quickly scolded me for being careless and told me I shouldn’t manually be trying to remove the block as that was dangerous. He proceeded to remove the cover and removed the block. When the block was removed, the cutter continued cutting downward to finish the previous cutting process. Had my hands been in the way (should I have been able to remove the jogging block myself), I could have lost a hand.

It gives me the chills to think back on that. Anyway, the lesson of the story is that you should take great caution when handling these machines. They are pretty foolproof and very safe, but you should still be very careful.

Be sure the stack paper cutter you are purchasing has proper safety features built in. You don’t want to skimp on safety.

Dahle 848 Professional Stack Paper Cutter Review

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Dahle 848 Professional Stack Paper CutterStack paper cutters have a variety of different uses. They can be used to cut larger paper down into tiny strips, create business cards, cut down prints and much more. Finding an effective stack paper cutter can be tough. I’ll be honest. There is a lot of junk out there floating around on the Internet.

At ABC Office, we try to only carry high-quality products, which includes stack paper cutters. One stack cutter that continues to be popular with our customers, and offers a great track record, is the Dahle 848 professional stack paper cutter. This is my review.

To begin with, all of Dahle’s stack paper cutters feature high-quality German engineering and build construction. This means that our Dahle line of paper cutters hold up well with continued use. This includes the Dahle 848.

The Dahle 848 is completely manually operated. Don’t let this scare you off. Although it is manual, it is remarkably easy to set up and it is very easy to use. It can still be used to keep up with medium to higher-volume jobs.

The blade is capable of cutting up to 700 sheets of standard paper in a single pass. This means if you need to cut a few thousand documents, prints or sheets of paper, you will only need to make a few passes of the blade to get the job done.

If you look at a picture of the Dahle 848, you will notice that the cutting handle is fairly long and features a series of angles. These angles aren’t just for design, they provide incredible amounts of leverage, which makes stack cutting easy.

The backstop on the Dahle 848 is spindle driven and it locks in place. This makes the backstop extremely sturdy and stable. It also makes adjusting the backstop for precision cuts simple and easy. This is also ideal for repetitive cutting.

Both sides of the blade, including the paper, are covered and protected by a clear protective shield. This shield is designed to prevent injuries, and if opened, disable the ability of the Dahle 848 to cut paper.

We have sold the Dahle 848 for well over 10 years now, at least since I started working here, and this cutter has a great track record with our customers. While I still personally prefer the MBM Triumph cutters, I still consider the Dahle 848 to be an excellent value for the money.

German Paper Cutters – Why Are They So Good?

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

German Paper CuttersWhen it comes to paper cutters, there is one common factor among the top brands. They are almost all German engineered or German made. German paper cutters are considered to be some of the best built and the longest-lasting lines around.

Owning several German cars (VWs), I have a certain appreciation for German engineering. While perhaps not the most popular line of cars here in the U.S., German engines are often considered so tough they can take a bullet and keep running. The same is the case with German paper cutters. They are tough.

The most popular German paper cutting brands I can think of are Dahle paper cutters (guillotines & stack cutters) and MBMs line of Triumph and Kutrimmer paper cutters (by IDEAL). These paper cutters are asked for by name and have gained an impressive reputation in the paper cutting industry and among our customers.

The only cutter I can think of that even compares to the German paper cutters is the British-made Rotatrim. As far as I know, the Rotatrims don’t leak any oil (sorry, a little car humor). Rotatrim is an excellent brand of paper cutter.

If you are looking for German-made paper cutters, these are the brands you’ll want to check out:

Dahle Paper CuttersDahle – Dahle makes a wide variety of guillotine cutters, rotary paper cutters and stack paper cutters. These paper cutters are typically the most affordable of the German-engineered paper cutters. You can find our Dahle paper cutters here.

Kutrimmer Paper Cutters and TrimmersKutrimmer – Kutrimmer (by IDEAL) is a line of guillotine paper cutters distributed by MBM. These guillotine cutters are very popular with our customers and use an arm-activated blade to cut paper, card stock, pictures and more. You can find our Kutrimmer paper cutters here.

Triumph Paper CuttersTriumph - Triumph (by IDEAL) is considered to be one of the heaviest-duty and best lines of stack paper cutters. These cutters come in manual, semi-auto and fully automatic designs. Triumph stack cutters are designed for high-volume paper cutting. You can find our entire selection of Triumph paper cutters here.

So there you have it. The kings of the German paper cutting industry. You can find our entire selection of paper cutters here. Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions.

MBM Triumph 4850 Electric Stack Paper Cutter Review

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

MBM Triumph 4850 Programmable Electric Stack Paper CutterDo you cut large volumes of paper on a daily basis and need a fast and precise way to do this? If you aren’t using one already, you should consider using a programmable electric stack paper cutter. One model that you may want to consider is the MBM Triumph 4850 electric stack paper cutter. This is my review.

To begin with, MBM Triumph is considered by many to be one of the largest stack paper cutter manufacturers in the world. These stack cutters, by Ideal, are German made and engineered. The build quality is considered to be exceptional and the customer satisfaction with our own customers is extremely high.

Here are a few specifications on the Triumph 4850. To begin with, it has a cutting width of 18 7/8″ and is capable of cutting up to 3″ of paper in a single pass. This is a lot of paper, making the 4850 capable of cutting an entire ream of paper. This includes standard paper, card stock, chipboard and much more.

Setting this stack cutter up for use is extremely easy. An easy-to-use 10 keypad makes adjusting the backstop a piece of cake. The 4850 has a programmable memory capable of storing up to 99 different jobs. A digital readout lets you know exactly where the backstop is, for easy adjusting.

Measurements are in Inches or Centimeters and are accurate to 1/10 mm or 1/100 inch. From start to cut, it shouldn’t take you more than a minute to have everything ready to go.

One thing I really like about this cutter is the LED optical cutting line. This line will let you know exactly where the blade is going to come down. I find this nice when cutting printed material. While the backstop is precise, sometimes printing registration isn’t always dead on, making the cutting line invaluable.

The Triumph 4850 electric clamp and an electric cutting blade. The clamp can be brought down by itself prior to cutting or be brought down along with the cutting blade. This is all done by pressing a series of buttons. Once the blade has been started, it takes just seconds for the 4850 to cut through 3″ of paper.

I have already mentioned this earlier, but the build quality on this cutter is exceptional. It weighs in at 556 pounds shipped. All the cutting components are made from metal and it is designed to last for years. The Solingen steel blade is extremely tough, but can also be re-sharpened when it becomes dull. The 3/5 HP motor doesn’t flinch and cuts paper without any issues.

Safety shouldn’t be a concern. Anything that could possibly cause injury is covered and protected during the entire cutting process. Safety features include:

  • Hinged, transparent electronically controlled front safety guard
  • Transparent safety cover on rear table
  • Main switch and safety lock with key
  • Electronically controlled, true two-hand operation

I have to say that if you have medium to high-volume stack paper cutting needs, this is a great paper cutter to have. This cutter should be perfect for print shops, copy centers and more.

When To Use (And Not Use) A Guillotine Paper Trimmer

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Dahle Guillotine Paper TrimmersWhether it’s purchasing software or equipment for a garden, we’ve all purchased products only to find out later they don’t do what you thought or needed. It’s a pretty big letdown. The same goes for office equipment. Here are a few ideas on when and when not to get a guillotine paper trimmer.

There are many different paper cutters out there. This includes rotary trimmers, stack cutters, guillotine paper trimmers and much more. The cutter you get will depend entirely on what you need to do. Take into consideration what you need the cutter for now and what you may need it for later down the road.

Multi-Purpose Cutting
– Guillotine paper trimmers are considered by many to be some of the best multi-purpose paper cutters around. This is because they can be used to cut card stock, photographs, laminated material, signs and much more. If you have the need to cut a variety of material, a guillotine paper trimmer (found here) may be just what you need.

High-Capacity Cutting - Most guillotine paper trimmers cut anywhere from 15 to 60 sheets of paper at a time. Cutting capacity depends on the specific model. If you are cutting hundreds to thousands of sheets of paper a day, you may need something with a little more cutting power. If this sounds like you’re situation, you may want to consider getting a stack paper cutter (found here) instead of a guillotine paper trimmer.

Photo Cutting – While guillotine paper trimmers generally do a good job of cutting down photographs, these cutters may not be the best option for exclusively cutting photographs. If you will only be cutting photographs, and nothing else, you may want to consider using a rotary paper trimmer (found here). Rotary paper trimmers are extremely precise and are great for repetitive photo cutting.

These are just a few situations where a guillotine paper trimmer may or may not be your best option. If you still have questions about the right paper cutter for you, please feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 and speak with one of our paper cutting experts. Cutting Sticks Critical For Proper Stack Paper Cutter Operation

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Cutting Sticks for Stack Paper CuttersThere’s one thing that many people don’t realize or take into consideration when it comes to proper stack paper maintenance and operation. What they’re missing is the fact that cutting sticks will wear out over time. A damaged or failing cutting stick will lead to incomplete cuts.

Many people, including myself, recommend keeping an extra cutting blade on hand to prevent downtime while the other is getting sharpened. I argue that people should also keep extra cutting sticks on hand for their stack paper cutters.

For those of you unfamiliar with cutting sticks, here is a brief description of what they are:

Stack Paper CuttersCutting sticks provide a pliable and non-damaging surface for stack paper cutting blades to rest on after completing a cut. These sticks are typically made from resilient plastic materials, however, they will eventually wear out over time. A cutting stick can be rotated a total of 8 times (two times per side) before they need to be replaced.

Cutting sticks assist in the cutting process by not only preventing damage to the cutting blade, but also allowing the blade to easily cut through the last couple of sheets of paper. If you notice your stack cutter having trouble cutting the last few sheets of paper, you may need to replace your cutting stick.

At ABC Office we carry cutting sticks for all MBM Triumph, Dahle, Martin Yale, Standard and Duplo stack paper cutters. You can find a comprehensive list of Triumph and Dahle cutting sticks here. You can find our entire selection of stack paper cutters here.

Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions about changing or finding cutting sticks for your machine.

Triumph – Best of the Stack Paper Cutters

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Triumph Stack Paper CuttersStack paper cutters play an invaluable roll in the printing and copying business. They are used to cut down reams of paper (often called ream cutters) and are the workhorses of the paper cutting industry. The question is often asked, “Which is the best stack paper cutter?” I answer quickly answer with a resounding “Triumph stack paper cutters.” Here’s why.

To begin with, Triumph (by IDEAL Krug & Priester) has been around for years. Distributed by MBM in the United States, the Triumph line includes a variety of manual, semi-automatic, digital and hydraulic stack cutters. These cutters use a guillotine style blade to cut paper. These cutters are German engineered and German made.

Customers often tell me that they would prefer to go with the “cheaper” model due to budget restraints. I tell them that if they only plan on using the cutter occasionally and don’t plan on having it around for years, that may be the way to go.

If you plan on using your stack cutter every day, all day, and need to have it around for years, you need to go with a Triumph paper cutter. It will easily make up its cost versus other cutters over the long haul.

Triumph Stack Cutter Benefits:

  1. German Engineering
  2. German Build Quality
  3. All-Metal Construction
  4. Extreme Safety
  5. Solingen Steel Blade
  6. Resharpenable Blade
  7. Little Manual Effort

One small detail many people don’t think of when purchasing a stack cutter is whether or not the blade can be sharpened. You may be surprised to know that many stack cutter manufacturers build their machines with disposable blades. This is not the case with Triumph. Triumph blades can be resharpened and reused, saving money over time.

I have used several Triumph stack cutters during my time here at ABC Office. Simply put, Triumph paper cutters are in a league of their own.
