Biometric time clocks are the latest in keeping track of employee time. They are easy to set up and have many advantages over traditional clocks. They utilize technology often only seen in James Bond movies. So what is a biometric time clock and what do they do?

Traditional time clocks allow employees to punch in and out of work by using a stamp card, a swipe card or a keypad. While these types of time clocks are still valid and useful, they don’t cut down on one of the most common types of time clock fraud…buddy punching.

Buddy punching occurs when a friend or colleague punches in on behalf of another employee, who may not even be there. This costs businesses money. Unfortunately it happens more often than you might think.

Biometric time clocks utilize either a hand or finger to punch in and out of work. This eliminates buddy punching as the individual has to be present to punch into work. Employers don’t have to worry about lost or misplaced cards either, which can be a huge security risk.

Early biometric time clocks developed a bad reputation due to the technology being in its infancy. This resulted in frustration because some employees experienced difficulty punching in. The technology is now much more reliable and accurate.

Most biometric time clocks are capable of exporting data for use with payroll software such as ADP, Paychex, QuickBooks, Excel, and more. This saves a lot of time over traditional punch-style time clocks, especially in a larger business.
