Foil Stamping Machines & Typeface Fonts

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Foil Stamping Machines, Fonts and EmblemsDo you own a foil stamping machine but want to use a different typeface or font? This is a question and a concern among many hot foil stamper owners. Don’t worry. You have many options available to you that will help you get more out of your machine.

To begin with, foil stamping machines can use a variety of different typefaces / fonts. Your biggest limitation is going to be the size of your type holder. This shouldn’t be too much of a concern though. Most foil stamping machine manufacturers offer larger type holders.

Chances are pretty good that the type holder you’re using is going to be more than enough to handle a different font style or size.

So here’s the next question I get. Where do you find more typefaces and fonts? We actually offer a wide selection of typefaces (fonts) and emblems available for use with hot foil stamping machines. Here is where you can find them:

  1. Foil Stamping Typefaces / Fonts
  2. Foil Stamping Emblems
  3. Kwikprint Type Holders
  4. Foil Stamping Rolls

You can find our entire selection of foil stampers here. We have decades of experience with foil stamping machines, so feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 if you have more questions.

ABC V-30 Portable Battery-Powered Bill Counter Review

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

ABC V-30 Portable Battery-Powered Bill CounterAre you in need of a compact, portable and battery-powered bill counter? If this is the case, the ABC V-30 portable bill counter (found here) is probably what you need. We have sold these for years and I have been able to personally use one on several occasions. This is my review.

To begin with, bill counters are huge time savers. They are able to complete in seconds what it would take minutes to do manually. While there are many bill counters out there, few of them are capable of running off of batteries.

The ABC V-30 bill counter can run off of 4 AA batteries or be plugged into the wall (AC / DC compatibility). While a battery-powered bill counter may not be for everyone, it definitely has its place.

Why would you use a battery-powered bill counter? The ABC V-30 is especially popular because it is portable and can be used in places where electricity may not be present. This may be at a kiosk, a county fair, an outdoor entertainment event or more.

The ABC V-30 is capable of holding and counting up to 200 new bills or 100 used bills. This isn’t bad for a machine as small and compact as this one is. The motor runs at a speed of up to 600 bills per minute.

This little machine is actually quite remarkable to see in use. It is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet it is a quick little counter. It has a little digital readout that makes it easy to see exactly how many bills have been counted.

It includes a nice little dust shield that can be closed when not in use. This is nice because it allows the bill counter to be placed in a bag or purse without suffering any damage.

While I admire the tenacity of this little counter, you should be aware that it is not intended for high-volume continuous counting. It is primarily designed for low to medium volume counting periodically throughout the day. It should also be noted that this bill counter does not have counterfeit detection capabilities although it will alert you to half or short bills.

Overall I give the ABC V-30 a good grade for being affordable, reliable and effective for what it’s meant to do.

You can find the ABC V-30 portable bill counter here. You can find our entire selection of bill counters here. If you still have questions, feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 to speak with one of our money counting specialists.

Bill Counter Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Bill and Money Counting Machines / CountersWhether you already own a bill counter or are in the market for one, it’s possible you may have a few questions about these convenient devices. I have spoken with many customers and answered several questions regarding bill counters. Here are some of the most common questions I get:

  • Can bill counters be used with foreign currencies? Yes, they can. Just be sure the foreign bills fit within the minimum and maximum specifications of the bill counter.
  • Can bill counters detect counterfeit money? Some can and some can’t. It depends on the bill counter. Most will specify whether they have counterfeit detection capabilities.
  • Can bill counters tell the difference between bill values? Most can’t. There are only few machines out there that can tell the difference between bill values. These machines are commonly referred to as bill discriminators. The Klopp PLUS P-624 is an example of a bill discriminator that we offer.
  • Can bill counters count paper? Yes. They can count paper, tickets and other material as long as it fits within the bill counter’s minimum and maximum specifications.
  • Can bill counters be used with both new and used bills? Yes. They can be used with new, used or mixed bills. Just be aware that you will not be able to fit as many used (old) bills in the counter as new. The general rule is that you can fit half as many used bills in a counter as new bills. If your bill counter holds 200 new bills, it will hold 100 used bills.
  • Can bill counters run on batteries? Some can, but most can’t. Bill counters typically require more power than batteries offer in order to count bills. The ABC V-30 is a great example of a counter that runs on batteries or an outlet.

These are a few of the most common questions we get. You can read more about bill counters by reading our bill counter guide found here. You can find our entire selection of bill counting machines here.

Formax FD 8500HS Level 6 High Security Paper Shredder Review

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Formax FD 8500HS Level 6 High Security Paper ShredderLevel 6 paper shredders provide the highest level of security available for shredding paper. If you are in need of a shredder with high security shredding capabilities for use in a department or office setting, you should take a look at the Formax FD 8500HS high security paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

To begin with, most businesses are going to be fine with a Level 3 or Level 4 paper shredder. However, if you are shredding top secret and extremely sensitive documents, you may need a higher security level. Level 6 paper shredders are designed for shredding the most sensitive material. This type of shredder is almost entirely used by the government, Department of Defense (DOD) and military.

The Formax FD 8500HS uses a shredder blade capable of cutting paper down to a 0.79 x 4.8 mm particle (1/32″ x 3/16″). Break out a ruler and measure that on a piece of paper. That is an extremely small particle of paper and is impossible to re-assemble. The FD 8500HS is able to do this to 4-5 sheets of paper at a time.

While the sheet capacity may seem small, keep in mind what is involved. Because a sheet of paper is being cut into such small particles, a lot of surface area is cut at once. This puts a lot of strain on the cutting head, resulting in fewer sheets being shred. This is the case with all high-security shredders. This is also why most strip cut shredders can cut more paper than their cross cut counterparts.

A couple of features that I personally really like about this shredder is the wide 16-inch shred opening and the 26 gallon bin. Because the opening (throat) on the shredder is so wide, it is able to accept most sizes of paper. The 26-gallon bin is able to hold a lot of paper and requires few bag changes.

Unlike many paper shredders of this size, the FD 8500HS has no special power requirements. It is designed to work with a 110V, 50/60 Hz power supply.

Formax shredders are known for their all-metal construction, great built quality and longevity. This shredder will have no problem keeping up with office demands. It can be used all day long without any issues. For the price, you’re really getting a lot of shredder.

Here is a video demo of the Formax FD 8500HS:

Overall I consider this shredder to be a great fit for government and military applications. You can find the Formax FD 8500HS high security paper shredder here. You can find our entire selection of high security paper shredders here.

Traco HotShot Shrink Wrap Film Heat Gun Review

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Traco HotShot Shrink Wrap Film Heat GunDo you have an L-bar or an I-bar sealer and either need a heat gun or are in need of a replacement? One model you should look at prior to making a purchase is the Traco HotShot shrink film heat gun (found here). I have used this heat gun and this is my review.

Traco is a leading U.S. manufacturer of shrink wrap film, sealers and equipment. This includes I-bar sealers, heat & bag sealers and other shrink wrap machines. One key element used in many of their shrink wrap systems is the HotShot heat gun.

The Traco HotShot is an efficient and portable machine designed to shrink film. This can be done from just about any angle and the entire shrinking process takes just seconds. This can be used to shrink film around a book, a DVD, a box and many other products.

I get asked the question all the time, “Can a hair drier be used to shrink film?” The answer to that is no. The Traco HotShot can produce up to 1100 degrees of heat. Hair driers never exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius). That said, a hair drier doesn’t even come close to reaching the needed temperature to shrink film.

The HotShot is an affordable alternative to using a heat shrink tunnel. Heat shrink tunnels can often cost in excess of over $1,000 and are primarily used for high-volume packaging. If your packaging needs are low to medium volume, the HotShot should be able to keep up with demand.

The HotShot has two different fan settings and includes an adjustable temperature dial. This heat gun also includes a protective hand guard to help prevent injury.

I have used this heat gun and it is very easy to use. There is no special training needed other than a little common sense. Simply plug it in, turn it on, select the temperature & fan speed and you’re ready to go.

You can find the Traco HotShot shrink film heat gun here. You can find our entire selection of shrink wrap machines and supplies here.

Improve Press Sheet and Digital Printout Drying Time

Monday, September 20th, 2010

MBM AJ-700 Air Paper JoggerDo you run, operate or own a printing press? Are you looking for a machine that allows press sheets and digital printouts to be air-dried immediately? If so, you may be in need of an air jogger.

Normal paper joggers use vibrations to align paper. Air joggers not only use vibrations to align paper, but also use air to align and separate paper.  This has many benefits. Because air separates the sheets, it keeps them from clumping together and creating double feeds and jams. This is also extremely beneficial because the air helps the ink on press sheets and digital printouts to dry faster.

We currently offer two different models of air joggers:

  1. MBM AJ-700 Air Jogger – The MBM AJ-700 air jogger forces air between sheets to reduce jogging time and eliminate powder buildup. Press sheets and digital copies can be air dried immediately to prevent offset. This significantly reduces misfeeds and double feeds in printers, folders, and collators.
  2. Formax FD 402A1 Air Jogger – The FD 402A1 High-Capacity Air Jogger is ideal for print shops and production houses as it aligns and dries printed sheets as a single process, while removing static electricity.

These joggers are both considered to be commercial / industrial paper joggers. They can be used all day long and don’t require any special “cool down” period of time.

You can find our entire selection of paper joggers here.

Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper Shredder Review

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper ShredderAre you looking for a solid and reliable high security paper shredder? One model, arguably considered to be one of the best around, is the Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper Shredder (found here). This is my review.

To begin with, the Intimus line of paper shredders has been around for decades. In fact, Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North used the Schleicher Intimus 007-S shredder to shred documents during the Iran-Contra scandal. Simply put, Intimus shredders are very popular with the government. The Intimus 0077SL carries on this tradition.

The Intimus 0077SL is frequently asked for by name. This is due in part to the reputable history Intimus has as a brand and because the 0077SL is one of the most secure paper shredders available. It is NSA / CSS approved for shredding and Destroyit top secret and highly sensitive documents.

Here are a few things you may be interested to know about the 0077SL. To begin with, it is rated as a security level 6 shredder. Level 6 is currently the highest security rating to be placed on a shredder. The particles that come out of the 0077SL are 0.64 mm x 2 mm in size (0.025″ x 0.0788″). Break out a ruler and measure that. That is extremely tiny and is impossible to reassemble.

Not only does the 0077SL shred paper into tiny particles, it can shred up to 14 sheets of standard copy paper at a time. For a level 6 shredder, 14 sheets is considered a lot of paper. High security shredders have tiny cutting blades that have to cut a lot of surface are at one time, decreasing the amount of sheets that can be shredded at a time.

A big benefit of the 0077SL is the shred bin. This shredder has a 45-gallon shred bin. That is a lot of paper, and considering how tiny the particles are, this shredder does not need to be emptied often.

The 16” wide opening on the 0077SL can handle most sheets of paper. This may range from an envelope up to a legal-size document. With a wide opening, there is less chance of a jam occurring.

The Intimus 0077SL is ideal for use in departments, offices and organizations that need high-security shredding capabilities throughout the day. There is no need to wait for the 0077SL to cool down. It can be used continuously without any issues.

I give the Intimus 0077SL high marks. Not only is it popular with our customers, it has proven itself over the years to be reliable.

You can find the Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper Shredder here. You can find our entire selection of high security paper shredders here. Still have questions? Call one of our paper shredding experts at 1-800-658-8788.

GBC VeloBind System One Binding Machine Review

Monday, September 20th, 2010

GBC VeloBind System One Binding MachineWhether you are looking for an attractive binding format or needs something that will hold up well over time, you may want to look at the GBC VeloBind System One binding machine (found here). This machine has been around for some time and I have had many opportunities to use it. This is my review.

To begin with, GBC (General Binding Company) created the technology that is now known as VeloBind. Binding machines that handle this type of binding come in one, two and three-inch designs. VeloBind has also been marketed as QuickBind and SureBind.

Unlike many other binding formats out there, VeloBind only punches 11 holes along the 11-inch side of a sheet of paper. While only using 11 holes, VeloBind is still considered to be one of the most solid and long lasting binds available today.

The VeloBind System One is designed to punch and bind books up to 1″ thick. The punch itself is manually operated and the binding process is done by the machine using a “hot knife” system. This means it cuts off the excess prongs (total of 11) and seals them off with heat. This is what actually attaches the back binding strip to the front. The entire process takes about 10 seconds.

The System One can punch about 1/8-inch of material at a time. This can be paper, card stock, clear covers and other report cover. The punch isn’t hard to use. Due to the “U” shape of the handle, it is easy to grab and use from just about any angle.

The System One is especially popular for use with law firms, construction companies and others that need a solid bind. As previously mentioned, the System One can bind 1″ of material. This equals out to be about 250 sheets of standard copy paper. The bind is not just solid, but it is also tamper proof.

The biggest disadvantage of VeloBind is that books bound with this format cannot lay flat. This is because the spine of the book does not pivot on a binding element, as is the case with wire, comb and coil. The end of the book is literally clamped together with the binding strip. I don’t have any problem reading VeloBound books, they just can’t be laid flat on a table.

While I’m not the biggest fan of GBC binding machines (comb / wire), I do really like their VeloBind line of binding machines. I think the end result is classy and the VeloBind System One is a well-built machine.

You can find the GBC VeloBind System One binding machine here. You can find our entire selection of VeloBind machines here. While I don’t have a video demo available of the System One at this time, I do have one of the VeloBind System Three that you can find here. While the machines are a little different, the process is very similar.

Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions regarding VeloBind machines.

Formax FD 8400HS High Security Paper Shredder Review

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Formax FD 8400HS High Security Level 6 Paper ShredderHigh security paper shredders are some of the most sought after paper shredders by both government and military. If you’re in the market for a tough high security paper shredder, you may want to consider the Formax FD 8400HS high security paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

To begin with, Formax makes a wide variety of office equipment and products. This includes paper folding machines, folder inserters, bursters, paper shredders and more. Formax currently makes two different high security paper shredders. This includes the FD 8400HS and the FD 8500HS.

The FD 8400HS is a high security paper shredder designed for departmental use. It is rated at a security level 6 (NSA/CSS specification 02-01 approved). This means it can be used to shred the most sensitive and confidential documents. This is also why this paper shredder is so popular with the U.S. government and military.

The particle size is 0.79 x 4.8 mm. That’s small. That’s so small that it is impossible to re-assemble. Upon first glance, the shredded particles almost appear to be dust.

The Formax FD 8400HS rings in at just over $2,000. While there are Level 5 shredders that cost less, this price makes the Formax FD 8400HS one of the least expensive Level 6 shredders available today. This is also another reason why the shredder is so popular with our customers.

The FD 8400HS has a shred sheet capacity of 6-7 sheets. While that may not seem like many sheets, you need to consider the security level involved. Level 6 shredders are not known (or able) to shred large volumes of paper at a time. This is due in large part to the complex nature of the cutting blades. It does, however, have a continuous duty motor, which allows this shredder to be used all day long.

The 20-gallon shred bin holds a lot of paper. Because the cut particles are so small, they really compact well in the shred bin. This means fewer bag changes.

The shred opening on the FD 84000HS is 10.25-inches wide. This means that it will easily handle 8 ½ x 11-inch sheets of paper. I find shredders with 10+ inches easier to use because you don’t have to worry so much about the paper going in straight.

Overall the FD 8400HS is a solid shredder. I would have no problem recommending this shredder to a friend for high security shredding. We also have a Service Department and are able to service this machine and honor the warranty.

You can find the Formax FD 8400HS high security paper shredder here. You can find our entire selection of Formax paper shredders here and high security paper shredders here. Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any paper shredder questions.
