Dahle 20614ec Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

Dahle 20614ec Level 3 Cross Cut Paper ShredderAre you looking for a good departmental paper shredder that can be used by 4-6 people throughout the day? Finding a good continuous-duty paper shredder that is designed from the ground up for office use is tough. A lot of shredders out there require 30-minute cool down periods, have limited shredding capacities and aren’t designed for use by multiple people. One solid shredder that a lot of our government customers like to use is the Dahle 20614ec cross cut paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

Dahle has been making solid paper shredders for well over a decade. This includes strip cut, cross cut and high-security shredders. I can’t tell you why, but Dahle shredders are especially popular with the U.S. government. That is probably due in part to the fact that Dahle makes solid, no-nonsense paper shredders.

The Dahle 20614ec is a level 3 paper shredder with a cross cut pattern. Particles created by the Dahle 20614ec measure in at 1/8″ x 1 3/8″. While Level 3 isn’t the highest security level available, it is more than adequate for most people. Just try assembling a document cut into 1/8″ x 1 3/8″ particles. It simply isn’t going to happen.

Many modern shredders, perhaps as a result of cost-cutting measures, use belts to turn gears and shredder blades. While a belt works for light to some medium-duty shredding, the belt ultimately wears out and can often be the weakest part of a shredder. The Dahle 20614ec is chain driven. This chain is strong, durable and perfect for continuous shredding.

One significant feature that I personally really like about the Dahle 20614ec is the use of rubber shock mounts. These mounts are utilized throughout the shredder, which absorb vibrations caused by the motor and moving parts. This absorption helps to significantly reduce noise, making this shredder an ideal machine for office use.

The control panel on the 20614ec is pretty nice and easy to navigate. The top button turns the shredder on. The next button down puts the shredder in forward mode. The button below that puts the shredder in reverse mode. That’s it. Three buttons. A couple of LED lights bellow the buttons let you know when the shredder is full and when the door is open.

The mouth on the Dahle 20614ec is 10 ¼ wide, allowing this shredder to accept most common paper sizes. This allows the 20614ec to shred envelopes, letter size & legal size paper, credit cards, CDs and other documents. This shredder can be used to shred patient records, client information, contracts and more.

I personally think that the Dahle 20614ec has a very soft and non obtrusive appearance. It blends in well with existing office equipment without drawing too much attention.

This shredder can easily be placed in a centralized office location for use by multiple people. It is rated by Dahle as being able to shred between 400 and 2,000 documents a day and has a shredding capacity of 20-25 sheets. These specs are perfect for most people.

I give the Dahle 20614ec high marks on reliability alone. When we ship these out, we never hear back from the customer unless it’s to order replacement shredder bags. That’s a good thing.
