Top 5 Best Vacuum Food Sealers 2011

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Minipack Chamber Vacuum Food SealersIf you package food on a regular basis, cook food via sous vide, freeze food or sell food in a store, you probably need a solid vacuum food sealer. Finding the best vacuum sealer isn’t always easy. Having used many machines myself, I can vouch for the fact that quality varies as much with vacuum sealers as it does with cars. I have compiled a list of the best vacuum food sealers available for 2011.

To begin with, my list focuses primarily on chamber vacuum food sealers, which are ideal for commercial, industrial and long-lasting vacuum food packaging. This list is based on customer feedback, track records and overall reliability.

The vacuum food sealers listed bellow are commonly used to package fish, poultry, beef, pork, fruits and vegetables. Some of them can even package an entire chicken. Because these are chamber style sealers, they can also be used to package powders and liquids.

Top 5 Best Vacuum Food Sealers 2011

  1. Minipack MVS 31 X Chamber-Style Sealer
  2. Minipack MVS 45 X Food Packaging Sealer
  3. Minipack MVS 35 X Vacuum Food Sealer
  4. Minipack MVS 20 Chamber Food Sealer
  5. Minipack MVS 26 X Chamber Vacuum Sealer

Let me point out a few things you should keep an eye on when shopping for a vacuum food sealer:

Where is your vacuum sealer made? Our Minipack line, considered to be one of the most reliable brands around, is made in Italy.

Is the metal used in construction heavy gauge? Many “cheap” vacuum food sealers use flimsy sheet metal in construction that can lead to easy denting and even dangerous metal edge cuts. Minipack vacuum food sealers use tough heavy gauge stainless steel.

Is the basin seamless? When packaging food, you don’t want food getting trapped in creases, cracks and seams. This isn’t only gross, it’s also unhealthy. Our Minipack vacuum food sealers utilize a seamless design.

Hopefully these tips and suggestions help you with your vacuum food sealer shopping. Be aware that many of the models listed are on equal ground when it comes to quality, with the only difference being the size of the chamber. As with any domed chamber vacuum sealer, you often end up with an extra 2-4″ in height due to the curvature of the dome.

Please feel free to contact one of our food packaging specialists at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions.

You can find our entire selection of vacuum food sealers here and chamber vacuum sealing bags here. Our line of vacuum sealers includes industrial chamber sealers designed for high-volume food packaging.

SircleBind CB-60 Comb Binding Machine Review

SircleBind CB-60 Comb Binding MachineIf you like to bind books as a hobby, run a home business or have small-volume book binding needs, you probably don’t need a binding machine that costs thousands of dollars. You probably need something pretty basic, yet professional. As part of my under $100 binding machine reviews, I would like to introduce you to the Sircle CB-60 comb binding machine (found here). This is my review.

SircleBind (aka Sircle) has been around for a few years now, which is long enough to have developed a reputation for offering “budget” binding machines. Their machines provide a nice blend between affordability and functionality.

The SircleBind CB-60 comb binding machine is one of the most affordable comb binding machines we offer. As of this article, you can pick one up for about $57. For that price, you can’t expect high-volume binding capacities, but it certainly has its place.

To begin with, this machine is extremely compact. It only weighs 5 pounds shipped. It is also very easy to pick up and move around. The handle itself can be folded down and locked into place. If you need a portable book binding machine, this may be just what you need.

The CB-60 can punch through about 6 sheets of paper at a time, however, I would recommend scaling that back to 4-5 sheets. This machine utilizes a lot of plastic parts and I think scaling back the punching amount will extend the life of this machine. It can be used to punch card stock, clear covers and other binding covers, but I would recommend punching one at a time. Don’t force this machine to punch paper. If it feels like you are straining too much, back off. You don’t want to break it.

The binding capacity on this machine is somewhat limited, maxing out at a ½” thick (12mm diameter). That equals out to be about 95 sheets of paper. This means you won’t be able to use the CB-60 to bind thicker books, but it is good for binding booklets, presentations and other reports.

While you can use the CB-60 to bind custom-size books, I would recommend staying with 8 ½” x 11″ paper. It doesn’t have disengageable punching pins, so you could potentially end up with a half-punched hole if you are binding material smaller than letter-size paper.

Having used this little machine myself, I have to say that I highly recommend that it not be used for anything more than light-volume book binding. I have used many binding machines (dozens upon dozens) and I have to say that I have never before seen a comb binding machine that used plastic fingers for opening combs.

The construction is plastic. The shell is plastic, the comb opener is plastic and the catch tray is plastic. If you use this machine for more than light volume use, you will probably be disappointed.

If you are using this for just the occasional book or report, I think you’ll like its compact nature, sleek design and great price point.

Here are a few affordable comb binding alternatives:

Organizational Benefits of Desktop Wire Display Racks

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Wire Display RacksIf you’re like me, you probably have a lot of literature sitting on your desk. This clutter is annoying, and if you directly work with customers and clients, it can be equally frustrating for them. Information should be organized and presentable, if not for you, for your customers. Simply put, it’s professional.

One of the best ways that you can clean up and organize your desk is by using a desktop display rack or literature holder. One of the most modern and classy ways to display literature on a desk is to use a wire display racks. I’m not talking about coat hanger wire; I’m referring to tough heavy-gauge wire.

Wire displays are designed to hold up through daily use. Among many benefits, they are often available in a variety of different powder coat finishes, with black being the most common color. Not only can they be used to display literature to your customers, patients and clients, they can also be used to simply organize material on your own desk for your own use.

Benefits of Wire Display Racks

Durability – Wire display racks are tough. They can hold a lot of material, without any wear, and can withstand many types of direct impacts (i.e. falling on the floor) without suffering damage. These types of racks are more durable than wooden or plastic displays.

Visibility – Wire displays make literature, magazines, brochures and other material extremely easy to view. This is because the design of wire, by nature, is easy to see through.

Accessibility – Wire makes literature extremely easy to access. If you can’t grab the material from the top, you can often lift it out or access it from the side.

Affordability – While you might think wire displays would be expensive, they are actually competitively priced, right around the same price as a wood or plastic display.

Where to Find:

We have been selling wire desktop display racks, freestanding wire displays and wall-mounted wire display racks for years now and they have all been a huge hit with our customers.

You can find our entire selection of desktop wire display racks here and our entire selection of magazine racks and literature holders here.

What is a Miro Cut Paper Shredder?

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Micro Cut Paper ShreddersIf you are looking for a cross cut paper shredder, you may have come across the term micro cut shredder. So exactly what is a micro cut paper shredder? Based on the name, you would assume it was a paper shredder that cuts paper into tiny particles, but isn’t that what a cross cut paper shredder already does? I will explain the subtle differences.

To begin with, a cross cut paper shredder is a shredder that cuts paper in multiple directions, creating tiny particles of paper. Cross cut paper shredders are often called particle cut shredders, diamond cut shredders and confetti cut shredders. These terms all mean the same thing.

A micro cut shredder is a type of cross cut shredder, but not all cross cut shredders are micro cut shredders. I hope that isn’t too confusing. What it all boils down to is the term micro cut shredder is synonymous with the term high security shredder. While the term high security shredder is probably the more common term used, many manufacturers (such as MBM Destroyit) like to use the term micro cut.

Let me break this down even further. A micro cut paper shredder (high security shredder) is any shredder that falls within security level 5 or security level 6 specifications. On paper, this is what it means:

Micro Cut Paper ShreddersSecurity Level 5 – Anything that falls within 0.78mm x 11mm. Security level 5 used to be the highest security level available up until a few years ago. It was used for all government “high security” shredding.

Security Level 6
– Anything that falls within 1mm x 4-5mm. A few years ago the NSA established the security level 6 standard for the most top-secret documents. Few shredders are available in a security level 5 as almost all high security micro cut shredders are now level 6.

Do you need a micro cut paper shredder? I would say most people do not require a micro cut, unless you are government or a business that is worried about professional-level espionage. Most individuals and businesses will receive more than enough security from a level 3 cross cut pattern, which measures in at 3.9mm x 30-50mm.

You can find our entire selection of micro cut paper shredders here. Remember, micro cut and high security shredders are the same.

Top 10 Best Portable Book Binding Machines

Portable Book Binding MachinesIf you like to bind books, or need to quickly bind presentations and reports on the go, you probably need a portable book binding machine. While there are a lot of binding machines available, few of them can be easily picked up and moved from one location to another. This article will cover some of the most portable book binding machines available.

One important thing to be aware of, when shopping for a probable binding machine, is to realize that most portable machines are designed for light use or occasional use. I would put that at about 10-20 books a day. This is more than adequate if you are binding reports and presentations on the go. Portable binding machines are also almost always manually operated, with electric machines being too heavy to easily carry in a bag or move around.

I am going to list the top 10 best portable book binding machines. This list will include the three most common bookbinding formats; these being comb, wire and coil.

Top 10 Best Portable Book Binding Machines (Listed Alphabetically)

  1. Akiles iCoil 41 Coil Binding Machine
  2. Akiles iCoil 41 Plus Coil Binding Machine
  3. Akiles iWire 21 Wire Binding Machine
  4. Akiles iWire 31 Wire Binding Machine
  5. Fellowes Star Comb Binding Machine
  6. Fellowes Starlet Comb Binding Machine
  7. Intelli-Bind IC110 Coil Binding Machine
  8. Intelli-Bind IB150 Comb Binding Machine
  9. SircleBind CB-60 Comb Binding Machine
  10. SircleBind WR-60 Wire Binding Machine

These book binding machines are all lightweight and very portable. Many of them even include handles that fold up for added portability and convenience. The Akiles line of iWire and iCoil machines are especially nice as they fold completely up and include everything you need (minus supplies) to get up and going.

MBM Destroyit 3104 Cross Cut Paper Shredder (Level 3) Review

Friday, May 27th, 2011

MBM Destroyit 3104 Cross Cut Paper ShredderWhen shopping for a paper shredder, chances are that you want something that’s affordable, a great value and reliable. It is possible to find the right shredder that hits all the points your business needs. One great option for a small business or organization is the Destroyit 3104 cross cut paper shredder from MBM (found here). This review will cover its various qualities, specifications and if any, weaknesses.

If you’re new to the paper shredder industry, or are simply not familiar with MBM, let me get you up to speed. While there are a lot of “OK” brands out there, Destroyit is considered to be the “crème de la crème” of shredders. In other words, businesses and government entities that do a lot of shredding often go with the Destroyit shredders.

There are a lot of reasons why Destroyit shredders are so highly regarded, and the Destroyit 3104 cross cut shredder hits all these points. To begin with, the Destroyit 3104 is a German engineered and built shredder. This means it has been put together with the highest-quality parts available, unlike many comparable shredders that are built with “budget” parts.

While I personally think any business would be happy with the Destroyit 3104 cross cut, it is best suited for use in small to medium-size businesses or as a departmental shredder. I would say this shredder could easily be used constantly throughout the day by 5-10 people without a problem. By constant, I am referring to heavy use.

The MBM Destroyit 3104 utilizes a thermally protected motor that is designed to be used continuously without suffering from overheating. Many shredders require a cool down period. Not so with the 3104. The 3104 uses a 1 horsepower (0.64 KW) single phase motor that runs on 110-120 volts of electricity. The motor is powerful, fast (18 feet per minute) and reliable.

I remember years ago when we used to tell customers to remove paper clips and staples (if possible) prior to shredding paper. The Destroyit 3104 uses a strong hardened steel cutting shaft that can easily handle staples and paper clips without suffering any damage. It can also be used to not only shred paper, but credit cards, DVDs and CDs as well. MBM is so confident in the cutting shafts that they are covered by a lifetime warranty.

The control panel on the Destroyit line of shredders, including the Destroyit 3104, is one of the easiest-to-use available today. IF you look at the picture, you will see a large round button. MBM calls this the “Easy Switch.” You can run pretty much every operation on this shredder from that button. It tilts to turn the shredder on or put it in reverse and built-in backlit symbols let you know the status of the shredder. This includes when the cabinet door is open and the bag is full.

This is a video demo of the Destroyit 3104 in use:

The throat on this shredder measures in at 12″, which is more than enough for most paper, forms and documents. The sheet capacity on this shredder is 22-25 sheets at a time, which is impressive for a level 3 cross cut shredder. Once shredded, paper is turned into tiny 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm) particles. A large 32-gallon bin holds the shredded paper, which is pretty large. This means fewer bag changes for you!

Overall I have to give this shredder a solid 5 out of 5 stars. I am confident you will enjoy this shredder. It should provide you with years of reliable use.

You can find the Destroyit 3104 cross cut paper shredder here and our entire line of Destroyit paper shredders here. We also offer a great selection of other brands. You can find our entire selection of paper shredders here.

Best Binding Covers for Your Reports and Presentations

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Book Binding CoversIf you’re binding a report or presentation, regardless of style, you more than likely want it to look professional. There are several ways you can go about doing this. I personally recommend using a binding cover. Our binding covers will work with comb, wire, coil or Velobind and they look great! Here are the binding covers I personally recommend.

To start with, you’re probably going to need a front cover and a back cover. I personally recommend using some sort of a clear cover for the front and a card stock cover for the back. We offer clear covers in various thicknesses and back covers in a variety of colors and styles. Another great option for a front cover is a card stock cover with a window. I will briefly describe the differences between binding covers.

Best Binding Covers for Your Reports and Presentations

Clear Binding Covers – Clear covers come in a variety of thicknesses, these being 5, 7 and 10 mils. A mil is a thousandth of an inch. The smaller the number, the thinner the cover. We offer clear covers in clear and matte finishes. Clear covers are by far the most common front binding cover used by our customers.

Polypropylene Binding Covers (Poly Covers) – Polypropylene covers, often-called poly covers, are synthetic binding covers. Some, such as sand and leather finish, are designed to look like card stock. We also offer poly covers with a crystal, strip and hologram finish. Each of these styles come in a variety of colors. These types of covers are quickly growing in popularity due to their durability.

Sturdy Grain Binding Covers – These types of covers have a non-glossy leatherette finish to them. Available in a variety of colors, these covers have always been a hit. These covers are made from a paper-based card stock.

Linen Binding Covers – Linen binding covers, which are a type of thicker card stock, have a cross-hatch pattern on them that almost have the appearance of fabric. This style of binding cover is one of my personal favorites.

Composition Binding Covers – Composition covers, after clear covers, are one of our most popular book binding covers. These covers have a leatherette texture to them. One side has a glossy shine to it and the other side is dull. These covers look excellent on the back of a report or presentation.

Window or no Window? So should you go with a window or without a window? It really depends on where you will be using the cover. Solid covers are best used on the back of a report and covers with windows are best for the front. The small window allows contents from the page, located underneath, to show through. Many people like to buy binding covers in pairs, with and without windows.

Standard or Oversize? We offer binding covers in a standard 8 ½” x 11″ (square corners) and an oversize 8 ¾” x 11 ½” format (round corners). The size you use really depends on your preference and the type (and size) of paper you will be binding. Standard 8 ½” x 11″ covers are by far the most popular purchased.

I hope this mini guide helps you find the right cover for your presentation. It’s amazing how much book binding covers spruce up a presentation or report. You can find our entire selection of binding covers here. You can find our entire selection of book binding machines and supplies here.

MBM Destroyit 3804 Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

MBM Destroyit 3804 Cross Cut Paper ShredderWhat is it that you want in your office paper shredder? Most people would respond that they need speed, security, capacity and reliability. If these four points sound like something you need in a machine, consider looking at the MBM Destroyit 3804 cross cut paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

MBM Destroyit (known as IDEAL in Europe) have been making shredders for decades. One thing remains constant, their shredders are considered to be some of the best in the industry. Shredder designs and styles range from home office up to industrial shredding. The Destroyit 3804 is one of the latest additions to this tradition.

The MBM Destroyit 3804 cross cut shredder encompasses pretty much everything I would want in a paper shredder. Let me start with capacity. This shredder hits high capacities on just about every level.

To begin with, the Destroyit 3804 has a massive 44-gallon shred bin. Consider the fact that most cars have a 15-25 gallon gas tank. This shredder can hold about double that amount in shredded paper. This means much fewer bag changes for you and makes it possible for multiple people to use this shredder without the “Bag Full” indicator always being on.

Another “capacity” feature of this shredder is the wide capacity shredder throat. This machine can shred paper up to 16″ wide. That means you can shred a lot of small stuff or larger computer forms. Not only can you feed paper into this beast, but it can also handle shredding credit cards and CDs and will accept staples and paper clips without a hitch.

The next feature that impresses me is the speed. While the Destroyit 3804 cross cut already has an impressive 20-22 sheet shredding capacity, it can shred that paper at a speed of 20 feet per minute. That means you can shred over a football field’s length of 20-20 sheets in an hour. That’s just plain fast.

Also consider the fact that this shredder cuts paper down to a Level 3 security level, which is the most sought-after security level for office paper shredding. That means the Destroyit 3804 CC cuts paper into 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm). Break out a ruler and measure that out. Small….right? You aren’t putting that back together.

Shredding speed, capacity and security all make this shredder perfect for departmental and centralized office shredding. Now let’s cover the “dependability” part of this review.

While I love stuff made in the USA, I have complete respect for German products. German shredders are THE benchmark when it comes to office paper shredders. From the hardened steel blades to the twin drive single-phase motor, this shredder is designed for heavy-use.

Even the motor has been thermally protected for continuous use. You will never have to wait 30 minutes for the motor to cool down with a Destroyit paper shredder.

In summary, you can do much better than a Destroyit paper shredder, and the Destroyit 3804 cross cut is one of the best options you have for office paper shredding. The build quality is excellent, it is reliable, secure and very fast. I use Destroyit shredders here at ABC Office and love them.

Introducing: Dahle CleanTEC Paper Shredders

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Dahle CleanTEC Paper ShreddersIf you read this blog on a frequent basis, you probably know how much I like Dahle paper shredders. Dahle shredders are known for being quiet, reliable and holding up for years. They are especially popular with the government and military. Over the weekend Dahle announced their new line of CleanTEC paper shredders. This new lineup looks very promising. I’ll explain.

To begin with, the new CleanTEc line of paper shredders are one of the most technologically advanced paper shredders available. This is because they implement sophisticated dust filtration system. These new shredders are also extremely energy conscious, designed from the ground up to save on electricity.

Here is a video on the new Dahle CleanTEC filtration system and shredders:

Introducing DAHLE CleanTEC Document Shredders

So why would you want to buy a Dahle CleanTec paper shredder? Here are a few reasons you may want to consider:

Dahle CleanTec Filtration: As you may know, air in the office is often full of particles. This can lead to sneazing and overall bad health. Paper shredders create a lot of dust. The new Dahle CleanTec filtration system removes up to 98% of paper dust created while shredding.

Dahle CleanTec Safe Technology: Have you ever used a voice-activated shredder? The Dahle shredder, in the event of an emergency, will stop by the operator simply saying “Stop.” These shredders also feature several design elements that make these shredders extremely safe to use and operate.

Dahle CleanTEC ESP Protection: Have you ever experienced a paper jam while shredding paper? This can be time consuming and costly. The new line of Dahle CleanTec shredders can actually have ESP (Electronic Sensing Protection). The shredder, at all times, knows how much stress is being put on the motor. If too much paper is inserted, these shredders will stop before a jam can occur.

Dahle SmartPower: We all want to save energy, power and electricity. The new line of CleanTec paper shredders utilizes several technologies designed to save power. After 10 minutes of inactivity, these shredders will go into an idle sleep mode. After 30 minutes, these shredders will shut down to a point where there is 0% energy draw.

Dahle EvenFlow Lubricator: Paper shredders have a lot of moving parts, and as a result, they need to be oiled. This will help your shredder run at optimal levels and will result in a longer lifespan. The new line of Dahle CleanTEC shredders have automatic oilers that keep parts properly lubricated, which should provide you with some peace of mind.

German Engineering: Unlike many shredders available online, Dahle paper shredders feature superior German engineering and design. They are also made in German by Dahle Bürotechnik GmbH. The end result is an extremely reliable paper shredder that features cutting shafts / blades made from the best steel in the world….German Solingen steel. These cutting shafts have a lifetime warranty. Dahle German CleanTEC shredders also feature rubber shocks, electronic sensors and thermally protected motors.

So there you have it! Dahle’s new line of CleanTEC paper shredders. Having seen a presentation of these shredders, I have to say that I’m impressed. If these end up anything like Dahle’s older lineup, you should be very happy with your purchase.

You can find our current lineup of Dahle paper shredders here. As mentioned earlier, while not all online yet, you can still order Dahle CleanTEC paper shredders from us by calling 1-800-658-8788. You can find our entire selection of paper shredders here.
