MBM Destroyit 2604 Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

Monday, November 8th, 2010

MBM Destroyit 2604 Level 3 Cross Cut Paper ShredderI recently had the opportunity of unboxing and helping set up an MBM Destroyit 2604 cross cut paper shredder (found here) on our showroom floor. Now that I have had a chance to play around with it and run it through a few trial runs, I have a pretty good idea on how it works. This is my review.

To begin with, the MBM Destroyit line (by IDEAL) has a great reputation with businesses. With a wide range of sizes and cutting capacities, Destroyit has quickly become an office favorite. Destroyit shredders are German engineered and German built from the ground up with quality and ease-of-use in mind.

My first impression, upon unboxing the Destroyt 2604, was how heavy it was. It took two of us to take the shredder head and lift it onto the cabinet. I have to say that I am extremely impressed as to the build quality. The particular model we unboxed and used was the cross cut version.

Destroyit 2604 Cross Cut Shredder Control PanelThe shredder sits on casters, so mobility shouldn’t be an issue (although it is a heavy beast). It weighs in at 119 pounds shipped. The exact dimensions of the 2604 are 18 1/2″ x 22 1/2″ x 36 1/2″.

One thing that I immediately noticed as we set up the shredder was the waste bin. Unlike many departmental shredders that have you put in a free-floating plastic bag, the 2604 has an actual plastic bin where you can place a shredder bag liner. This makes the 2604 very easy to empty and much cleaner to use.

Keep in mind that the 2604 is a departmental shredder, designed to be used by about 4-8 people. Destroyit makes office shredders that are much bigger, for an entire office. The 2604 could probably be used by an entire office and not even flinch.

The Destroyit 2604 (cross cut) we used is rated as a Level 3 shredder. The cross cut blades cut particles into 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm) pieces, although it is also available in a level 4 with particle sizes of 3/32″ x 5/8″ (2 x 15 mm). It is also available in a Level 6 micro cut. These blades are able to handle staples, credit cards and CDs. The sheet capacity of the Level 3 model is 20-22 sheets of standard copy paper.

The control panel on this shredder is about the easiest around to use. It uses a rocker button for operational control. Press it forward to turn the shredder on and backwards to put the shredder in reverse. It’s that easy. Several LED lights are in the button that will let you know when the door is open and when the bag is full.

A series of 7 lights let you know how much stress is being put on the shredder. The more lights, the more stress. I like this system because it gives you an idea on how much paper you can feed into it without counting the paper ahead of time. The 2604 has a continuous duty motor that does not require any cool down and can be used all day long.

The 2604 we unboxed in the showroom has a built-in automatic oiler which is pretty slick. It has a clear tube going into the back of the shredder, supplying the blades with a adequate amount of lubrication. An oil bottle sits on the side of the shredder. This is far easier than manually oiling a shredder and dramatically prolongs its life.

I can’t emphasize enough in words how good the build quality is on this shredder. I highly recommend it for pretty much an office department. You won’t be disappointed.

Martin Yale UC5500 ScriptStroyer Pharmacy / Prescription Bottle Shredder Review

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Martin Yale UC5500 ScriptStroyer Pharmacy Prescription Bottle ShredderDo you own, run or work for a pharmacy, hospital, clinic or doctor’s office? If so, you probably deal with prescription drugs on a daily basis. As you may know, disposal of prescription bottles must be done in a way that patient information is protect. One great way to do this is to use a prescription bottle shredder. One model you may want to consider is the Martin Yale UC5500 ScriptStroyer prescription bottle pharmacy shredder (found here). This is my review.

Prescription bottle shredders are fairly new to the market in relation to traditional paper shredders. A few well-known manufacturers of pharmacy shredders are Martin Yale and Ameri-Shred. The new Martin Yale UC5500 ScriptStroyer is one of the most affordable models on the market today.

An important part of HIPAA compliancy is the proper storage and destruction of customer information. If you have ever looked at a plastic prescription bottle, you may have noticed that the label contains a lot of personal information. These labels need to be properly disposed of.

The Martin Yale UC5500 is a prescription bottle shredder designed to help pharmacies, hospitals and other medical facilities be HIPAA compliant. The shredder itself can be used to shred bottles, lids, adhesive labels and paper containing patient information. It even features the ability to shred up to 10 sheets of paper.

Martin Yale UC5500 Pharmacy Bottle ShredderThe UC5500 is designed to handle bottles up to 3 ½” in diameter. This includes wet or dry bottles. The shred size of the particles is 5/32″ x 1 1/2″.

One thing I really like about the UC5500 is its compact design. It is large enough to get the job done, but compact enough to fit under most counters. The actual size of the UC5500 is 17 1/4″ x 21 5/8″ x 33″. For what it does, the UC5500 is very quiet.

The build quality of the UC5500 ScriptStroyer is very good. It weighs in at 186 pounds (unpackaged). Martin Yale makes the popular line of Intimus shredders.

One thing many people forget about when using a shredder is proper maintenance. One critical part of maintaining a shredder is oiling it. Unfortunately this can be easy to forget. The Martin Yale UC5500 includes its own automatic oiler.

Even if you aren’t dealing with empty bottles on a regular basis, it is great to offer the service to your customers. This has caused many pharmacies to experience more repeat business.

Overall I consider the UC5500 to be an excellent fit for any pharmacy or hospital. The construction is good and there is plenty of support from us to help with any parts, servicing or questions.

Silent Paper Shredders – Is It Possible?

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Quiet Paper ShreddersDo silent paper shredders exist? While the ultimate goal of a completely silent paper shredder does not yet exist, there are some very quiet models out there. If you work in an office, quiet can be very nice. Here are a few tips that should help you locate a quiet paper shredder for use at home or in the office.

To begin with, you have probably heard them. Paper shredders that sound like a lawn mower. I don’t know about you, but I really hate a loud shredder. There are few things you can keep an eye open for when shopping for a quiet shredder, and if you already own one, there are a few things you can do to quiet it down.

Quiet Shredder Tips & Ideas

Decibel Rating – The decibel rating is how much noise the shredder produces when turned on. The higher the decibel rating, the louder the shredder. Most shredders will now let you know what the decibel rating is somewhere in the specifications. Here are a few decibel rated objects that should help you determine what’s quiet and loud:

  • Library – 30 Decibels
  • Telephone Dial Tone – 80 Decibels
  • Standard Motorcycle – 100 Decibels
  • Gun Shot – 140 Decibels

Most shredders run anywhere from 50-70 decibels. Anything in the 50-60 decibel range is pretty quiet.

Strip Cut & Cross Cut – This probably comes as no surprise, but a strip cut shredder is typically quieter than a cross cut shredder. This is because strip cut shredders have fewer parts, less-complex blades and do less cutting. The only downside is that strip cut shredders aren’t as secure as their cross cut counterparts.  You can find both our cross cut and strip cut shredders here.

Shredder Oil – Shredder oil, believe it or not, will help keep your shredder quieter. This is because it cuts down on noise-causing vibrations and friction. You can find our shredder oil here.

So there you have it, three of the most important things to consider when looking for a quiet shredder. Luckily most modern-day shredders are much quieter than shredders from just a decade ago. Hopefully, with time and technology, shredders will become even quieter.

HSM ProfiPack 425 Cardboard Shredder Review

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

HSM ProfiPack 425 Cardboard ShredderAre you looking for an alternative way to package products for shipping? If you are using packing peanuts, you may want to consider using cardboard as an alternative packaging material. One great way to take unused boxes and turn them into free packaging is by using the HSM ProfiPack 425 cardboard shredder (found here). I have used this shredder and this is my review.

We live in a very environmentally conscious world today and are always looking for new and inventive ways to recycle. One great way to save your business money, recycle and be more environmentally conscious is by using a cardboard shredder like the ProfiPack 425. Cardboard is biodegradable and is a great alternative to foam packaging peanuts.

Another great benefit about cardboard packaging is that boxes are everywhere. If you run or operate a warehouse, you probably have empty boxes laying around. While some businesses dispose of boxes by using a compactor, others are beginning to discover that shredding them costs less and makes great packaging.

The HSM ProfiPack 425 is designed to quickly take boxes and shred them. Shredded cardboard does not have the same appearance as shredded paper. When a box is run through the ProfiPack 425, it maintains its shape and isn’t actually cut up into tiny pieces. Shredded cardboard has more of a waffle-like appearance, making it soft and pliable.

We actually have the ProfiPack 425 in our warehouse and we use it to create packaging every day. When you insert a piece of cardboard into the machine for shredding, it cuts the cardboard to a 16 ¾” width. Excess cardboard falls off to the side of the machine (where it can later be shredded).

It can be a little difficult to explain, so you can see a video demo of the ProfiPack 425 in action by going here.

The shredded cardboard is very easy to handle, stretch and manipulate. Many people have mentioned that it has a chain-link fence appearance. You can see an example here:

Shredded Cardboard Example

The ProfiPack 425 can easily handle about 2-3 layers of cardboard at a time. This means you don’t need to worry about cutting down the box prior to shredding it. Simply smash the box down flat and run it through the shredder.

The ProfiPack weighs in at 386 pounds shipped. While this is pretty heavy duty, don’t worry. It rests on casters that make the ProfiPack 425 very easy to move around.

Overall I consider the ProfiPack to be a solid machine. Having used it myself, I can definatley see the benefits of shredding cardboard and consider the Model 425 to be a great solution to just about any warehouse’s cardboard recycling and packaging needs.

You can find the HSM ProfiPack 425 cardboard shredder here. You can find our entire selection of cardboard shredders here.

Formax FD 8500HS Level 6 High Security Paper Shredder Review

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Formax FD 8500HS Level 6 High Security Paper ShredderLevel 6 paper shredders provide the highest level of security available for shredding paper. If you are in need of a shredder with high security shredding capabilities for use in a department or office setting, you should take a look at the Formax FD 8500HS high security paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

To begin with, most businesses are going to be fine with a Level 3 or Level 4 paper shredder. However, if you are shredding top secret and extremely sensitive documents, you may need a higher security level. Level 6 paper shredders are designed for shredding the most sensitive material. This type of shredder is almost entirely used by the government, Department of Defense (DOD) and military.

The Formax FD 8500HS uses a shredder blade capable of cutting paper down to a 0.79 x 4.8 mm particle (1/32″ x 3/16″). Break out a ruler and measure that on a piece of paper. That is an extremely small particle of paper and is impossible to re-assemble. The FD 8500HS is able to do this to 4-5 sheets of paper at a time.

While the sheet capacity may seem small, keep in mind what is involved. Because a sheet of paper is being cut into such small particles, a lot of surface area is cut at once. This puts a lot of strain on the cutting head, resulting in fewer sheets being shred. This is the case with all high-security shredders. This is also why most strip cut shredders can cut more paper than their cross cut counterparts.

A couple of features that I personally really like about this shredder is the wide 16-inch shred opening and the 26 gallon bin. Because the opening (throat) on the shredder is so wide, it is able to accept most sizes of paper. The 26-gallon bin is able to hold a lot of paper and requires few bag changes.

Unlike many paper shredders of this size, the FD 8500HS has no special power requirements. It is designed to work with a 110V, 50/60 Hz power supply.

Formax shredders are known for their all-metal construction, great built quality and longevity. This shredder will have no problem keeping up with office demands. It can be used all day long without any issues. For the price, you’re really getting a lot of shredder.

Here is a video demo of the Formax FD 8500HS:

Overall I consider this shredder to be a great fit for government and military applications. You can find the Formax FD 8500HS high security paper shredder here. You can find our entire selection of high security paper shredders here.

Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper Shredder Review

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper ShredderAre you looking for a solid and reliable high security paper shredder? One model, arguably considered to be one of the best around, is the Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper Shredder (found here). This is my review.

To begin with, the Intimus line of paper shredders has been around for decades. In fact, Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North used the Schleicher Intimus 007-S shredder to shred documents during the Iran-Contra scandal. Simply put, Intimus shredders are very popular with the government. The Intimus 0077SL carries on this tradition.

The Intimus 0077SL is frequently asked for by name. This is due in part to the reputable history Intimus has as a brand and because the 0077SL is one of the most secure paper shredders available. It is NSA / CSS approved for shredding and Destroyit top secret and highly sensitive documents.

Here are a few things you may be interested to know about the 0077SL. To begin with, it is rated as a security level 6 shredder. Level 6 is currently the highest security rating to be placed on a shredder. The particles that come out of the 0077SL are 0.64 mm x 2 mm in size (0.025″ x 0.0788″). Break out a ruler and measure that. That is extremely tiny and is impossible to reassemble.

Not only does the 0077SL shred paper into tiny particles, it can shred up to 14 sheets of standard copy paper at a time. For a level 6 shredder, 14 sheets is considered a lot of paper. High security shredders have tiny cutting blades that have to cut a lot of surface are at one time, decreasing the amount of sheets that can be shredded at a time.

A big benefit of the 0077SL is the shred bin. This shredder has a 45-gallon shred bin. That is a lot of paper, and considering how tiny the particles are, this shredder does not need to be emptied often.

The 16” wide opening on the 0077SL can handle most sheets of paper. This may range from an envelope up to a legal-size document. With a wide opening, there is less chance of a jam occurring.

The Intimus 0077SL is ideal for use in departments, offices and organizations that need high-security shredding capabilities throughout the day. There is no need to wait for the 0077SL to cool down. It can be used continuously without any issues.

I give the Intimus 0077SL high marks. Not only is it popular with our customers, it has proven itself over the years to be reliable.

You can find the Intimus 0077SL High Security Level 6 Paper Shredder here. You can find our entire selection of high security paper shredders here. Still have questions? Call one of our paper shredding experts at 1-800-658-8788.

Formax FD 8400HS High Security Paper Shredder Review

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Formax FD 8400HS High Security Level 6 Paper ShredderHigh security paper shredders are some of the most sought after paper shredders by both government and military. If you’re in the market for a tough high security paper shredder, you may want to consider the Formax FD 8400HS high security paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

To begin with, Formax makes a wide variety of office equipment and products. This includes paper folding machines, folder inserters, bursters, paper shredders and more. Formax currently makes two different high security paper shredders. This includes the FD 8400HS and the FD 8500HS.

The FD 8400HS is a high security paper shredder designed for departmental use. It is rated at a security level 6 (NSA/CSS specification 02-01 approved). This means it can be used to shred the most sensitive and confidential documents. This is also why this paper shredder is so popular with the U.S. government and military.

The particle size is 0.79 x 4.8 mm. That’s small. That’s so small that it is impossible to re-assemble. Upon first glance, the shredded particles almost appear to be dust.

The Formax FD 8400HS rings in at just over $2,000. While there are Level 5 shredders that cost less, this price makes the Formax FD 8400HS one of the least expensive Level 6 shredders available today. This is also another reason why the shredder is so popular with our customers.

The FD 8400HS has a shred sheet capacity of 6-7 sheets. While that may not seem like many sheets, you need to consider the security level involved. Level 6 shredders are not known (or able) to shred large volumes of paper at a time. This is due in large part to the complex nature of the cutting blades. It does, however, have a continuous duty motor, which allows this shredder to be used all day long.

The 20-gallon shred bin holds a lot of paper. Because the cut particles are so small, they really compact well in the shred bin. This means fewer bag changes.

The shred opening on the FD 84000HS is 10.25-inches wide. This means that it will easily handle 8 ½ x 11-inch sheets of paper. I find shredders with 10+ inches easier to use because you don’t have to worry so much about the paper going in straight.

Overall the FD 8400HS is a solid shredder. I would have no problem recommending this shredder to a friend for high security shredding. We also have a Service Department and are able to service this machine and honor the warranty.

You can find the Formax FD 8400HS high security paper shredder here. You can find our entire selection of Formax paper shredders here and high security paper shredders here. Feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 with any paper shredder questions.

Dahle Paper Shredder Bags – Keeping Things Clean

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Dahle Paper Shredder BagsDo you have a Dahle paper shredder and need replacement bags? No problem. We offer a great selection of Dahle paper shedder bags for pretty much every model out there. So why should you use Dahle paper shredder bags?

I know of people out there who try using any old garbage bag as their shredder bag. While this may somewhat work, there are a few problems with this scenario. To begin with, using a bag that isn’t designed for your shredder will often result in too much slack, too little room and unfortunate messes.

Emptying a paper shredder should be a clean, effortless process. The right shredder bag will ensure fewer bag changes, less mess and potential prolonged the shredder’s life.

Why could this prolong the life of the shredder? Less mess means fewer particles clogging up essential mechanical and electrical components.

You can find our Dahle paper shredder bags here. You can find our entire selection of Dahle paper shredders here. For more information on paper shredder bags and which one you should use, feel free to contact us at 1-800-658-8788.

Industry Exclusive: Fellowes Paper Shredder Shipment Blocked

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Fellowes Office Paper ShreddersIn case you haven’t heard, Fellowes (the makers of those shredders everyone loves) is experiencing a headache of epic proportions. Fellowes has confirmed that its Chinese joint venture partner has blocked all shipments at its facility in Changzhou, China.

As a result, many Fellowes paper shredders are no longer in stock and are on indefinite backorder. The shipment stoppage began in August and should begin to affect U.S. markets in September. Fellowes  is in the process of working with with the Chinese government and party officials (with the help of the US government). Current efforts by Fellowes have been unable to lift the blockage.

While this spells bad news for many of you who use and enjoy Fellowes paper shredders, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck without an alternative. HSM, a leading manufacturer of high-quality office shredders, has produced a list of Fellowes “equivalent” models.

From my own experience with HSM, I can safely say that you will be as happy (if not happier) with an HSM shredder as you will be with a Fellowes shredder. You can find our entire line of HSM paper shredders here.

We have created a convenient list of Fellowes paper shredders and their HSM shredder equivalents. You can find this list by clicking here.

Destroyit 2260 Personal Paper Shredder Review

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Destroyit 2260 Strip and Cross Cut Personal Paper ShredderAre you tired of buying cheap shredders from the local department store that seem to fall apart in just a few weeks to a few months? One shredder you may want to consider using in your home office or next to your office desk is the Destroyit 2260 personal paper shredder by Ideal (found here). This is my review.

Destroyit shredders, from Ideal, are considered by many to be some of the best shredders available today. They are German engineered and German made. Destroyit shredders range in size from home office to industrial size.

The Destroyit 2260 is available in both a strip cut and a cross cut design. The compact size of this shredder makes it perfect right next to a desk. This shredder measures in at 8 3/4″ x 13 1/2″ x 21″. It includes a 5-gallon shred bin, which is more than adequate for home office and deskside shredding.

The strip cut version of this shredder is able to cut up to 10-12 sheets of paper at a time (security level 2) and the cross cut version can handle up to 5-6 sheets of paper at a time (security level 3). This level of security is usually more than adequate for most businesses.

The mouth on this shredder is 8 ¾-inches wide. This means it is able to handle most common sizes of paper. Both the strip cut and the cross cut versions of this shredder run at about 12 feet per minute.

One feature that I really like about the 2260 is the clear window on the front of the shred bin. This window makes it easy to see how full the bin is. The bin itself pulls out for easy emptying.

Here is a video demonstrating several features of the Destroyit 2260.

Overall I really like this shredder. While it is more of an investment up front, this shredder should hold up for years without any issues. You can find the Destroyit 2260 personal paper shredder by Ideal here. You can find our entire selection of Destroyit paper shredders here.
