LWS-1 Roll Laminator Cart & Workstation Stand Review

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

LWS-1 Roll Laminator Cart & Workstation StandI normally only write reviews on machines, but I felt the LWS-1 laminator cart (found here) warranted a review. It has been around for decades and is currently one of the top choices schools, businesses, copy shops and other organizations use for holding their laminator. This warrants the question, “Is the LWS-1 something that I really need in my office?” I would like to answer that question and more in this article.

Roll laminators (found here) are heavy machines. Even the smaller 25” and 27” models still weigh a hefty amount. This creates a couple of problems. First off, a heavy laminator is hard to move around. If you’re in a classroom / school setting, and you need to shuffle and move equipment around on a regular basis, this poses a very big problem.

The second problem is that not all tables and desks are able to support a lot of weight, especially considering many of these laminators weigh in excess of 50 or more pounds. Desks and tables are also large, awkward and can be difficult to maneuver around. A cart makes a laminator easy to access from most angles.

This is where a laminator cart comes into play. The LWS-1 is a laminator cart designed to be used with 27” wide or smaller laminators. It is sometimes called the Tamerica LWS-1 or the HOP LWS-1.  It can support a roll laminator up to 110 pounds and it sits on four casters, making it possible to move a laminator around a room. This card isn’t flimsy like many carts out there. You don’t need to worry about the cart tipping over or causing safety problems like you find with many cheaper laminators.

I have used the LWS-1 laminator cart. We have used it to hold the Ledco Educator and the Easy Lam 27” laminator. In both of these situations, it supported and held the laminator without a problem. The legs that support the table on the LWS-1 is really tough made from a durable metal frame.

The table that sits on top of the frame is also extremely tough. The base of the frame features four plastic guard bumpers that prevent the card from running into and causing damage with walls and office furniture. The cart measures in at 42”L x 26”D x 29 ½”W.

A feature I especially like is the roll film holder and finished product holder. The film holder can be used to hold rolls of lamination film up to 27” wide, making it easy to change out film in a moments notice. A flat slanted basket on the other side of the laminator can be used to hold finished lamination projects or additional supplies.

Overall I would have to say that this cart is the best out there for a laminator up to 27” wide and under 110 pounds. It is mobile, easy to work around and is much nicer to use versus a table or desk. To this day we still use one of these carts out on our own showroom floor.

If you have any questions about this roll laminator cart, just give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. We are also able to provide you with roll lamination film (found here) and many other laminator cart and stands (found here). Do you have experience using the LWS-1? Post your experience in this article in the form of a comment. Thanks for reading!

Destroyit 4002 Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

Destroyit 4002 Cross Cut Paper ShredderI just spoke to a guy on the phone today who was commenting to me about how much he hates to wait for his shredder to cool down every 20 minutes before he can use it again. Unfortunately this person had purchased a paper shredder that was woefully inadequate for his needs. If your office is in need of a solid departmental-level paper shredder, the Destroyit 4002 (found here) is an excellent option. We actually have one of these shredders in our building here at ABC Office and I have used it on many occasions. I would like to share my feedback and experiences with you.

The very customer I spoke about earlier continued on to ask me which paper shredder brand I would personally recommend. I explained to this customer that one of my personal favorite lines is the Destroyit line. He then said, “What makes this shredder any better than the others out there?” I went on to explain that Destroyit paper shredders are German engineered and German built, which gives them a huge leg up on many other brands. To be frank, German paper shredders are the pinnacle of the paper shredding industry.

The Destroyit 4002 is a departmental paper shredder to its core and is one of my personal favorites for use in an office by several people throughout the day. It uses a thermally protected motor that allows it to run all day without overheating. The cross cut version, which I have personally used, can shred anywhere from 24-26 sheets of paper at a time, which is more than adequate for most businesses. The 1 ¾ horsepower motor doesn’t stutter and shreds the paper at a speed of 25 feet per minute into 3/16” x 1 ½” particles. This particular shredder is a Level 3 (P-4 on the new scale).

Because this shredder is designed to be used throughout the day, it comes equipped with a massive 44-gallon shred bin. I have personally shredded boxes of material in a single sitting with this shredder without filling the bag. I LOVE not having to continually empty this shredder over and over again. It can be used to shred paper, credit cards and CDs. Be cause it is built with hardened steel cutting shafts, it also accepts staples and paper clips without missing a beat. After an hour of inactivity, it will go into an energy saving mode.

One thing I really like about this shredder is how quiet it is. Cross cut shredding paper requires a lot of cutting and effort on the part of the shredder. Many comparable models out there sound like a lawn mower or a wood chipper. Nobody wants to hear that grinding / whirring noise in the office. This shredder is comfortably quiet. Having used it many times, I really think you could use this right next to a group of professionals in the office without annoying them.

You can’t jam this shredder, which I love. While it shreds 24-26 sheets of paper at a time, who is going to sit around and count out each sheet? This shredder can detect the stress being put on the motor. If it is fed over capacity, it will stop and back out the paper rather than continue to run (which burns the motor out on other ill equipped shredders).

The control panel on the Destroyit 4002 is as simple as a round rocking button. Tilt it forward to turn it on and tilt it forward again to turn it off. Tilt it back to put the shredder into reverse. LED lights built into the button will also alert you when the shredder is full, door is open and more. The wide 16” throat on this shredder includes a safety shield which prevents dangerous access to the shredding blades. To top it all off, this shredder rests on casters, making it easy to wheel around the office.

I love this shredder. Can you tell by my review? You will not be disappointed with this shredder in an office setting. It really is that good.

If you have more questions about this shredder, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-658-8788. We would love to help answer your questions. Because this is in our office, we can also provide you with a live video demonstration over the Internet if you would like to see it in action. You can find the Destroyit 4002 paper shredder here and our entire selection of paper shredders here.

We are an authorized MBM Destroyit dealer and have a fully staffed Service Department that can help you out with every little detail on your shredder. They can service it for you, find someone in your local area to service it for you or provide you with parts and supplies as needed.

Thank you for reading my review. If you own one of these shredders, please post your experience at the end of this article in the form of a comment. Thanks for reading!

Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 Pressure Sealer Product Review

Monday, July 15th, 2013

Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 Pressure SealerWhen it comes to single sheet mailing, there are few methods as affordable, professional and effective as a pressure sealer. These remarkable machines use special pressure seal paper to quickly fold and seal mail shut, eliminating the need to use envelopes and creating a tamper-proof piece of mail that can be used for invoices, checks, W-2s, PIN numbers, billing purposes and much more. One such machine is the Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 (found here). This is my review.

There are a lot of manufacturers out there who make pressure sealers, but none (in my opinion) come close to the quality that you will find in a Formax brand machine. Formax manufactures a dozen different pressure sealers and they are very well known for their envelope inserters, paper folding machines and paper shredders. Their machines are designed for serious professional use in a business environment and are excellent for daily operations.

The Formax AutoSeal FD 2002 is a desktop pressure sealer designed to fold and seal up to about 8,000 pieces of mail per hour with a monthly duty cycle of 50,000 pieces. This machine uses pressure seal paper, which has tiny pockets of glue around the edges. When run through this machine, those pockets of glue are burst open, causing the form to self seal. The seal is permanent and the only way to access the mail’s contents is to tear off the perorated edges.

The pressure seal forms (found here) and checks (found here) are tamper proof. That means there is no way to access the contents without obvious signs of tampering. I personally like the fact that no envelope is needed. The form is completely self-contained, is USPS approved and can be easily mailed out. You have probably received these types of forms in the mail in the form of a check, PIN number, statement or other type of mailer.

The FD 2002 is a mid-level machine from Formax. It is best used for light to medium-volume use. It features a drop-in style feed tray that can hold up to 250 pressure seal forms at a time. It can be used to handle pressure seal checks and forms up to 14” long. It is set up and used much like a standard paper folding machine.

This machine uses two feed trays that must be manually set in order to accommodate the desired fold. While they are manually set, they are very easy to adjust. I have also found that most businesses only require one or two types of folds, so usually once the plates are set they don’t need to be re-adjusted. This machine can create a C, Z, V, uneven C, uneven Z and several custom folds. A sound-dampening shield covers both of the fold plates. The sound cover can easily be lifted up, allowing access to the plates.

The control panel on this pressure sealer is extremely easy to use and a series of LED lights let you know when the power is on, cover is open, if the paper runs out and if a fault has occurred. Buttons let you start the machine, stop it and test samples.

You can buy this pressure sealer in two different configurations. You can buy it as the standard desktop version or with an exit conveyor and cabinet.

If you still have questions about this pressure sealer, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. We would love to help you out. You can find our entire selection of pressure sealers here.

Mighty Mutt MPV-18 Vacuum Sealer Review

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

Mighty Mutt MPV-18 Impulse Vacuum SealerIf your business is in need of an industrial quality impulse vacuum sealer, the Mighty Mutt MPV-18 (found here) is certainly an option to consider. It has been around for years, is made in the USA, is a well-known brand and is commonly used for packaging anything from medical supplies to food. With all the vacuum sealers out there, is this particular one the right choice for you?

The Mighty Mutt MPV-18 falls under the category of external vacuum sealer because it the bags are always outside the machine during the sealing process, unlike a chamber sealer. The advantage to this is that there are no height restrictions. With a wide 17.5” sealing width, the Mighty Mutt can be used to vacuum seal and package a wide variety of products.

This vacuum sealer also falls under the category of impulse sealer. Impulse sealing is a technology that doesn’t require any warm-up time prior to use. The sealing wire heats up and quickly cools down with every use, also making it very safe to use. The MPV-18 seals bags shut using a ¼” (6mm) flat band seal, which is more than enough sealing width for most packaging applications. A footswitch makes hands-free operation extremely easy.

The Might Mutt uses what’s known as a retractable nozzle system (made of stainless steel). When the top of the bag is inserted into the sealer, the nozzle slips inside the bag. This nozzle is what actually removes the air from the package. Once the designated amount of air has been removed, the nozzle will actually remove itself, allowing the bag to be sealed shut. The stainless steel nozzle is extremely easy to clean and far more durable than the plastic nozzles found on many competitors’ machines.

One thing that really sets the Mighty Mutt apart from the competition is the use of the Venturi Vacuum. This type of vacuum is a Seco Gramatech exclusive. Unlike other pumps, it uses no moving or electrical parts. This makes the machine extremely quiet, much more so than the competition. This also helps to improve the compressor life and improves the cycle rate of the machine. If you have ever seen this machine in use, you will be surprised to see just how fast the air is removed from the bag.

Here is a video of the MPV-18 Might Mutt in action:

This sealer is very easy to set up. It includes dials that allow you to adjust things such as the dwell, vacuum, seal and gas settings. It can be fitted with an optional internal compressor, single stage gas flush, bi-active seal system and it can be fitted for use with an optional 220V electrical system.

Weighing it at about 60 pounds, this vacuum sealer can be used on most workbenches, counters, tables or desks. It is designed to be fast, simple to operate and can be used just about anywhere. This machine is ideal for packaging medical supplies, parts, tools and even food.

Be aware that this vacuum sealer does require an external air compressor to operate.

If you have questions about this vacuum sealer, feel free to speak with one of our Packaging Experts at 1-800-658-8788. You can find our entire selection of external vacuum sealers here and chamber vacuum sealers here. We also have a Service Department that can provide you with replacement parts, service and technical support.

TC-350FLR Fish Chamber Vacuum Sealer Review

Monday, July 1st, 2013

TC-350FLR Fish Vacuum Chamber SealerOne of the best ways to package a fish is to use a vacuum sealer. One of the most effective ways to package fish on a full scale commercial level is to use a chamber vacuum sealer (found here). These large industrial machines can be used all day to package fish for storage, transportation, preservation and much more. They can be used to package fish cutlets, supremes, steaks, fletches and much more. If you are trying to vacuum seal full size fillets or the entire fish, you may have run into a few space issues.

While most chamber vacuum sealers are excellent for packaging meat, fruits, vegetables and more, many people who are packaging fish need length, not necessarily width. Most chamber sealers, however, feature square-shaped sealing basins that just don’t work with larger fillets or trying to vacuum seal the entire fish. This is where the TC-350FLR (found here) really finds its place.

The TC-350FLR features a rare design. It is far longer than it is wide, designed to package fish on a commercial level. This sealer measures in at almost 40” wide by 15” wide. The front sealing bar itself is just shy of 33” long. This long chamber is perfect for packaging fish or other long food items. It also features two 14.1” sealing bars on the left and right side of the machine.  There are many reasons why this sealer is such an excellent option for fish packaging purposes.

This fish vacuum sealer features a stainless steel design. Anyone familiar with the chamber vacuum sealing industry knows that BUSCH vacuum pumps are some of the best in the business. This sealer features a durable BUSCH vacuum pump. This allows the sealer to be used on a continuous basis without suffering the wear and issues found in vacuum sealers that utilize cheaper components.

The sealer itself contains an MPC 20 microprocessor that helps assist with the sealing process, ensuring a solid and professional seal every time. The LCD control panel is extremely easy to navigate and the electrical box is IP 65 rated against water. The control panel also features the ability to store up to 20 programs and includes an oil indicator light for maintenance purposes.

The cycling time, which includes sealing and removal of air, takes about 25-35 seconds, depending on the size of the object being packaged. This means you can easily package several hundred items a day without a problem. It is designed to be used with vacuum sealing bags up to 6 mil thick and seals these bags shut using a 6mm sealing wire. Bladder activated sealing and helps assist with the sealing quality and vacuum removal.

Overall, this is the perfect machine for fish vacuum sealing and packaging. You couldn’t ask for a better designed machine. It can be used for packaging small and large fish and is the perfect addition to any fish processing plant or even the die-hard fisher that wants the ability to pack and freeze his / her own catch.

If you still have questions about this vacuum sealer, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. We have decades of experience with chamber vacuum sealers and we would love to help you out. You can find our entire selection of external vacuum sealers here and chamber vacuum sealers here.

Dahle 507 & 508 Personal Rotary Paper Trimmers Review

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Dahle 507 & 508 Rolling Paper TrimmersI’ve spoken to a lot of people over the years who are looking for a solid scrapbook or craft paper cutter that can cut through their card stock, photos and is easy to set up. One model I frequently recommend is the Dahle 507 and 508 personal rotary trimmers (found here). These compact rotary paper cutters have been around for years. I have personally used them and would like to share my experience with you.

I hear a lot of complaints from people regarding cheap department store paper cutters. I have heard everything from it just feels cheap to the blade dulls too quickly. I have heard my fair share of complaints. Dahle has been around for decades and is known for their paper cutters. The Dahle 507 and 508 cutters, especially considering the price, do an excellent job.

So what is a rotary paper cutter (aka rolling trimmer)? A rotary cutter is a type of trimmer that uses a round cutting blade. This blade usually sits in some sort of housing that slides along a rail. These types of cutters are especially known for their precision. The are also immensely popular with scrapbookers.

Let me go into just a little more detail on the blade. Many “cheap” rotary cutters, such as those made by a company that rhymes with whiskers, use blades that roll along a rubber or plastic base. This often results in poorly trimmed paper or situations where the bottom sheet doesn’t cut at all. These Dahle cutters use a blade that actually slides up against a metal bar. This produces a very clean cut. This same cutting process also helps to sharpen the rolling blade, thus dramatically extending the lifespan of the trimmer.

Both of these cutters share several things in common. Both of these cutters feature a 7 sheet paper cutting capacity based on 20# bond paper. Both of these cutters are also German engineered. Both of these trimmers feature a plastic clamping mechanism that helps keep the paper in place during the cutting process, which really helps with keeping the cut straight during the entire trimming process. Both of these trimmers also feature a metal base that has a preprinted guide for easy paper alignment.

I would like to cover a few specifications between the two trimmers:

  • Dahle 507 – This trimmer has a 12 ½” cutting length, making it perfect for cutting photos and letter size paper. This is the most popular size for scrapbookers and hobbyists. It is extremely lightweight and very easy to carry around.
  • Dahle 508 – This trimmer has an 18” cutting length, allowing it to easily cut paper larger than letter size. It is excellent for trimming down larger photos, signs and small stuff as well.

Many scrapbookers out there like to use a rotary paper trimmer that has the option of using special cutting blades. You can actually buy the Dahle 507 as the Dahle 507K (kit). This kit includes the standard straight blade as well as a wavy blade, deckle cut blade and a perforating blade. The blades are extremely easy to swap out.

In conclusion, I have to say that both the Dahle 507 and 508 are excellent budget paper trimmers. If you are OK with the 7 sheet capacity, and don’t plan on using them in a print shop for heavy-duty use, I think you will really like these cutters. They are perfect for home or small business use and make great gifts.

If you still have questions, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. We would love to help answer your questions. You can find the Dahle 507 and 508 here and our entire selection of rotary paper cutters here.

Intelli-Fold DE-112AF Paper Folder Review

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

Intelli-Fold DE-112AF Paper Folding MachineIf you are considering buying a Dynafold paper folding machine, or any machine for that matter, you should seriously consider the Intelli-Fold DE-112AF (found here). This paper-folding machine has been around for several years now and has proven that it has what it takes to keep up with the competition, and in many situations, surpass it. I have years of hands-on experience with this machine and I would like to share some of my thoughts and feelings on this machine with you.

To start off with, this machine is comparable to a Dynafold DE-102AF on steroids. It has several built-in improvements that make it a huge value over the DE-102AF and other similar machines. I will go into more details over the specifications, but I would like to say that this machine is currently one of our best sellers. One reason I like selling this particular machine is that when it leaves our building, our customers don’t have any trouble with it. It is very straightforward to set up and doesn’t have the finicky problems you find with other paper folding machines.

Who would be best off using this machine? The DE-112AF is the perfect letter-size paper folding machine. It can quickly fold invoices, letters and other literature up to 8 ½” x 14″ in size or as small as 3.5″ x 5″. With that paper size range, it is very versatile. It can handle paper ranging in thickness from 16# bond up to 50# index. These specifications allow the DE-112AF to keep up with most office paper folding operations.

While this machine does have manually adjusted folding plates, it is actually really easy to set up. A quick setup guide is printed on the folding plate, letting you know exactly where each of the two folding plates need to be set up. Simply loosen the thumb screws on the folding plate and slide it towards or away from the machine. Both plates must be adjusted. One thing I really like about this machine is that both of the folding plates are found on the same side of the machine. I have always found that his makes setup easier and seems to make better use of often-limited desktop space.

The DE-112AF will create most common folds you need. This includes folds such as the letter fold (also known as the C fold), the accordion fold (also known as the Z fold), the half fold, double parallel fold, gate fold and more. Because the folding plates are manually adjusted, custom folds are very easy to do as well.

Once the folding plates are set, the paper can be set in the tray. The feed tray on this machine holds up to 500 sheets of paper at a time. The machine will fold all of the paper in the  tray until it is empty, after which the machine will automatically stop. The DE-112AF uses three friction rollers to pull in paper, unlike many machines that have just one. The three friction rollers ensure even and aligned paper feeding. This results in an excellent skew and perfectly aligned folds.

There several things this machine has that you simply won’t find in the DE-102AF. To begin with, this machine has sensors that won’t allow this machine to run without the folding plates being properly inserted. The DE-102AF doesn’t have this, which can result in some significant paper jams. The DE-112AF also has paper stacking wheels and a powered exit conveyors. The stacking wheel slows paper down after it is folded and keeps paper neatly aligned as it leaves the machine. This is ideal if you need to keep your folded literature organized as it leaves the machine. The DE-102AF only has a catch tray, which can potentially lead to some jumbled paper.

Here is a video of the DE-112AF paper folding machine in action:

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

I have used this machine a lot. I can safely say that it is one of the finest machines we offer in this price range. The internals are well put together, servicing is readily available and it is just a great overall machine. You can find the DE-112AF paper folding machine here and our entire selection of paper folding machines here.

Please feel free to contact us at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions .We would love to help you out. We can even test samples prior to purchase if you would like to see how your material would look folded on a DE-112AF. Do you already own one? Post your experiences here as a comment. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Formax FD 8500CC Office Paper Shredder Review

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

Formax FD 8500CC Cross Cut Paper ShredderPaper is abundant in the office. Regardless of the size of the office, all dispose of various documents on a daily basis. One of the best ways to destroy a document is by shredding it with something like the Formax FD 8500CC cross cut paper shredder (found here). This shredder is a workhorse and is designed for use in the office by multiple people throughout the day. So is this the shredder for your office? Read on and find out more.

Formax currently makes about 18 different models of shredders, which many of those featuring a strip and cross cut variation. These shredders range in size and capability depending on how many people need to use it per day, the security level desired and the material being shredded. As far as quality goes, Formax shredders are right up there with the German brands such as Destroyit, HSM and Intimus.

The Formax FD 8500 is a mid-level shredder. That means it is ideal for use in a small or medium size business. It can even be used in a larger business on a departmental level. This isn’t some deskside paper shredder. It is large and it means business, keeping up with most shredding needs. Here are just a few reasons why you may want to consider using it in your office:

  • Security Level – The FD 8500CC has a Level 3 cross cut pattern. This is considered to be the most ideal pattern for standard use in an office. The particle size measures in at 5/32” x 1-1/5”. This ends up being over 600 particles of paper per single 8 ½” x 11″ sheet of paper. This pretty much renders material unreadable.
  • Sheet Capacity – This shredder can handle about 16-18 sheets of paper at a time, which is an excellent amount for standard office use. A load indicator on the control panel will let you know if the motor is being over exerted, which means you don’t have to count out sheets prior to shredding the paper. If for any reason too much paper is fed in, the shredder will stop and reverse the stack back out.
  • Throat Size – The throat size is the maximum width of paper the shredder can handle. This can also be one of the most annoying bottlenecks on a shredder. In the case of the FD 8500CC, it has a 16″ wide opening. Luckily this is more than enough room to handle most shredder jobs. With a 16″ throat, this shredder can handle even large sheets of paper without a problem.
  • Motor Capabilities – Have you ever used a shredder that required to you wait for it to cool down after 20 or 30 minutes of use? This is not a problem you’ll have to deal with. The FD 8500CC has an AC geared thermally protected motor designed for continuous use and operation. This shredder is not a toy; it means business.
  • Control Panel – The control panel on this shredder is very informative, yet takes up little space. It has indicator lights that let you know when the shredder is in auto or manual mode, running in reverse, stopped, full or if the bin door is open. Below the lights is a start, stop and reverse button. To the right is a load indicator that lets you know how much stress the motor is under.
  • Bin Size – The bin size is another weak point on a lot of shredders. Many shredders have excellent features, but a bin so small that it has to be emptied every hour. The FD 8500CC has been built with a 26-gallon bin, which holds a lot of cross cut particles of paper. This means fewer bag changes on your part. This shredder will let you know when the bin needs to be changed.
  • Build – This shredder is built using an all-metal cabinet that is set on casters for mobility. It is build using high-end electronics and the motor is mated with heavy-duty steel gears. This has al been put together in a way that the shredder produces minimal noise, again making it an excellent choice for the office.

Do you still have questions about this shredder? Feel free to speak with one of our Paper Shredder Experts by calling 1-800-658-8788. We would love to help you out. We also have a full-time Service Department that can help repair, service or provide parts for your shredder.

Formax FD 8400 Office Paper Shredder Review

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

Formax FD 8400 Office Paper ShredderOne of the biggest mistakes people make when purchasing a paper shredder for the office is the expectation that a department store shredder will handle an office’s shredding needs. The sad reality is these cheap shredders burn out and break down in a very short period of time and are ultimately a waste of money. If you’re looking for a solid office paper shredder, you really need to invest in a machine that can keep up with the needs of the office. One such shredder is the Formax FD 8400 paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

Formax has been manufacturing paper shredders for years and their FD line of shredders have proven themselves over the years to keep up with office needs. The FD 8400 is an office shredder designed to be used by small department throughout the day. It is available as the FD 8400CC and FD 8400SC, depending on whether or not you need a cross cut or a strip cut pattern. Most people go with the cross cut pattern for the added security that it offers.

One of the biggest annoyances I have with many cheaper shredders is the small throat width. Many are set at just 9″ wide, which means you need to feed the paper in just right to ensure everything operates correctly. The FD 8400 has a 12.2″ wide throat width, that easily accommodates letter-size sheets of paper including larger sheets of paper. This width also makes it easy to feed in jumbled stacks of paper.

Speed is also a concern when shredding paper in an office setting. Nobody wants to stand around the shredder for minutes at a time trying to shred a small stack of paper. The FD 8400 shreds paper at a speed of 30 feet per minute, which is remarkably fast. This ends up being a foot of paper every 2 seconds. This means you can burn through a stack of paper very quickly. When it comes to capacity, the cross cut version shreds 18-20 sheets of paper at a time and the strip cut version shreds 30-32 sheets of paper at a time.

Another thing that bothers me with cheaper shredders is the overheating and cool-down period that you have to deal with. The Formax FD 8400 is built using a thermally protected continuous-duty motor. That means it never has to cool down. The powerful geared motor, which is connected to steel gears, can keep running throughout the day without batting an eye. It really is built that well. Considering the metal, motor and shredding blades used in these shredders, they are remarkably quiet. I have used this shredder at it does not distract at all.

As mentioned before, this shredder is available in a cross cut and a strip cut design. The cross cut is rated at a Level 3, which is HIPAA compliant, and the strip cut model is rated at a Level 2. The Level 3 cross cut shreds paper into 5/32″ x 1 1/5″ particles, where the strip cut version shreds paper into ¼” strips. Both models have a large 20-gallon shred bin, which holds a lot of paper between bag changes.

The FD 8400 comes built with a load detector that is visually displayed on the control panel. As the motor works harder, the load indicator lets the operator know. This makes it easy to increase or decrease the amount of paper being shredded. In the event that too much paper has been fed in, the shredder will automatically stop and reverse the paper back out. This office shredder also includes a bag full indicator, auto start/stop (via optical sensor) and a door sensor that stops the shredder in the event the door is opened. It also includes an oil indicator light, letting you know when it is time to oil the shredder blades. It can be fitted with an optional EvenFlow automatic oiler. This entire shredder sits on casters for easy maneuverability.

The FD 8400 is built with a self-diagnostic system. It records operation time, number of auto-reverse sequences, amount of paper shredded and more. This data can later be accessed by a service technician in the event of maintenance.

Both of these shredders are nicely priced and as of this article are available with free shipping. Preferred Pack TZ-888 Banding Machine Review

Preferred Pack TZ-888 Banding MachineIf you have the need to bundle paper, business cards, brochures, money, paper towels and other products together, you should consider using a banding machine. Banding machines can use either plastic or paper bands to quickly bundle items together. This is excellent for storage, retail, shipping and other purposes. One of the most affordable and durable banding machines we currently offer is the Preferred Pack TZ-888 (found here). This particular banding machine is available in two different versions, depending on the size of the items you are trying to package. This is my review.

Many people get strapping machines and banding machines mixed up. They are actually two totally different machines. Strapping machines are use hard plastic strips to keep boxes closed during shipping. Banding machines use wide strips of paper or plastic to bundle multiple items together. While similar, they are two very different machines used for very different purposes.

I recently handled a product in the wild that had been bundled. Have you ever seen a stack of paper towels that need to be put into a dispenser? These towels are often bundled together using a banding machine. You have to tear the paper band off in order to use the paper towels. Other products that are bundled, as mentioned earlier, includes literature, business cards, pamphlets, brochures and much more. The size of banding machine you get depends entirely on what you are bundling together.

I highly recommend, when shopping for a banding machine, to be sure the machine can accommodate your biggest item and that it can handle your future banding needs as well. These machines are versatile and can be adjusted to accommodate a variety of items, but they all cap out at a maximum size. The TZ-888 can bundle packages from 0.25″ H x 1.5″ W up to 5.5″H x 9.5″W. The larger TZ-888A can bundle packages from 0.25″H x 1.5″W up to 6.7″H x 10.5″W. Both of these machines use tape rolls up to 500 feet white that are made from paper (white / brown) or plastic (clear).

Bands can be applied in a variety of positions, based on what you are bundling and where you need the most security. Here is a video of the TZ-888 in action:

Both of these banding machines are compact and both can be used on just about any desk or surface. They both plug into any standard wall outlet. Both have an operational speed of about 20-25 bundles per minute. Speed is really limited by the experience of the operator and the size of the package being bundled.

So how do these machines work? It is very simple. There are three different ways to run it. You can switch it to automatic mode where it will bundle when something triggers the photo sensor. You can also press a button to bundle or press an included foot pedal. This machine will wrap the band around the product, tighten it, cut it and seal the open ends shut. The process is fast, accurate and remarkably secure.

The build quality on the TZ-888 and TZ-888A (with arches) is tough and excellent for daily use. If you need something even bigger, we also offer the TZ-889 and TZ-889A banding machines (found here).
