Electric Letter Openers – Best Features To Look For

August 11th, 2009

Electric letter openers are a critical and essential part to any mailroom. They can be a lifesaver or a nightmare, depending on the quality and reliability of the model being used. They key word there is “model being used.” Are you using the right model?

One of the biggest customer service issues I see, regarding letter openers, is customers using an electric letter opener for a job that is much bigger than the letter opener was designed to handle. It isn’t that the poor letter opener is malfunctioning, but rather it is being misused.

You won’t see a bicycle being used in NASCAR. Although a bike gets you from point A to point B, it won’t win any races. OK. Bad analogy on my part, but hopefully you get the point. Here are a few things to look for in an electric letter opener prior to making a purchase:

Mess – Many letter openers are now available in a chadless format. This means there isn’t any messy clippings laying around after a job.

Speed – Check out the letter openers speed. Make sure it will handle what you need to open now and in the future.

Thickness – Make sure your letter opener can handle your thickest letter. You don’t want any jams!

Tray – Do you need an exit tray? Some letter openers come with an exit tray for the opened mail.

You can find ABC Office’s entire selection of electric letter openers here. Also, we have some well-trained experts here who know a lot about the various models we carry, so feel free to call them and ask questions at 1-800-658-8788. Enjoy!

Multi-Purpose, Combination Binding Machines

August 3rd, 2009

I frequently get asked questions regarding binding machines and what they can bind. One of the most common questions asked is whether or not one binding machine can use supplies designed for another. An example would be a comb-binding machine using wire-binding supplies, or a wire binding machine using coil supplies. You can’t blame people for asking the question. We all want to get a machine that can do it all, but do binding machines exist that can bind multiple binding formats? The answer to this is more complex than a simple yes or no.

There is only one type of binding machine that uses a single punching die to punch holes for two totally different binding formats. This machine is a 19-ring comb-binding machine with a wire closer. Special wire supplies, called Spiral-O or 19-ring wire, is available that will accommodate a comb punch pattern. Multi-format comb binding machines have simply added a wire closer to finish the process. The Akiles MegaBind II is an example of this type of machine.

Although there is only one type of machine capable of using the same punching die for two different binding formats, there are other machines out there capable of using multiple punching dies for multiple binding formats. Akiles manufactures a couple of wire binding machines capable of binding 2:1 pitch wire and 3:1 pitch wire, such as the WireMac Duo. The advantage of having a multi-format machine is that you are not limited to just one binding format.

A very common way to purchasing a single binding machine, capable of binding multiple formats, is to purchase a punching base with interchangeable dies. This way you can buy a Velobind die, a comb-binding die, a coil binding die, etc. The dies slide in and lock into place and can easily be removed and replaced. The other part of the binding process, such as a comb opener, a wire closer or a coil inserter can be attached to the base. An example of this would be the Rhin-O-Tuff OD4000 and OD4800.

Advantages Of A Kneeling Chair

July 30th, 2009

If you’re like me and work in an office, you probably sit in a chair for good portion of the day. If you’re lucky, you’re using an ergonomic chair that conforms to your body for better posture and comfort. Regardless of the chair you are using, sitting in a chair all day long can take its toll on your back and neck. If you have already tried several chairs and still can’t seem to get comfortable, you may want to try a kneeling chair.

Kneeling chairs position your body in a way so that a lot of the pressure put on your lower back is directed towards your legs. This position is much more comfortable for many people and it isn’t uncommon for one using a kneeling chair to see a significant improvement in back pain. Kneeling chairs are also a great way to improve posture.

Many people look at a kneeling chair and immediately think, “that just doesn’t look comfortable.” Using a kneeling chair, due to the angles involved, is nothing like kneeling on the floor. These chairs are designed for ideal and optimum comfort. I have used one of these chairs personally and can vouch for its comfort.

We just recently added a Safco brand kneeling chair to our site. It is reasonably priced, in comparison to other office chairs. Please feel free to stop by our site and take a look. You can find it by clicking here.  You can see our entire selection of office chairs here.

Popular Cutting Blades & Digital Scrapbooking

July 13th, 2009

I have written several articles in the past about the best types of scrapbook paper cutters and would now like to cover some of the most popular types of blades. To start with, digital scrapbooking has significantly increased over the past five years, due in part to some great software and print-quality inkjet printers. Something digital scrapbooking is lacking is texture. Once the page is printed, albeit good looking, it lacks a certain dimension. How does this lead to paper cutting blades? Read on.

Just because digital scrapbooking looks flat doesn’t mean it’s all bad. This type of software can be used to print out some amazing patterns and pages after which photographs can be added. Adding photographs brings a layer of depth to the scrapbook page. Paper cutters can be used to cut borders around those photographs for a unique finished look.

Here at ABC Office the Carl RT-200 has been a favorite among our customers. This is because it has over 11 different blades that can be used. The blades can literally be snapped in and out for a different look. With 11 different blades to choose from, you’ll never get bored. Here are just a few examples of the unique blades we offer.

Polaroid 669 Film Replaced By FujiFilm FP-100C Instant Film

July 7th, 2009

Everyone’s favorite Polaroid 669 film has been replaced. Sad isn’t it? Although it has been gone for several months, we do get a lot of questions from customers regarding a replacement. Do not fret, there is a great replacement available.

Earlier this year Polaroid confirmed that they would stop making “Instant Film” that many of our photo ID and passport cameras use. Apparently this once popular film has fallen victim to the digital camera revolution. Polaroid 669 film was no exception.

Many people, however, really like the film. It requires no printer and can easily create instant photographs on site for identification and passport purposes. For this reason, we still sell a lot of Polaroid-style ID cameras (found here).

Still in need of instant film? You’re in luck. FujiFilm has a replacement that will work in all cameras that previously used Polaroid 669 film. This new film is called FujiFilm FP-100C Instant Film. We have a lot of it, it is priced about the same as the 669 film, and there is no indication that it will be going away anytime soon.

You can find our FujiFilm FP-100C here!

New Coin Rolling, Sorting & Counting Machine – ABC110

June 9th, 2009

There is a new option for counting, sorting and rolling coins here at ABC Office. This is the new model ABC110 coin counter. This new machine is both affordable and accurate. It features a hopper capable of holding up to 1600 coins (dimes) and counts coins at a speed of up to 270 coins a minute. We are the manufacturers of this new machine and can service / support it.

Basically you dump the coins into the machine and let it do the rest. There are two different holding trays you can use with this machine. The first option is to use coin drawers that hold pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. These drawers can then be used for bagging the coins.

The second option is coin tubes. These tubes are used in place of the drawers and can be used for rolling coins into shotgun style tubes. The ABC110 comes with both the drawers and the tube sorters. Stop by ABC Office today and check out this new coin counter. You can find it by clicking here.
