Q&A: Lassco Corner Rounder Cutting Dies

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Lassco CR-20 Corner RounderI recently had a customer ask me a really good question regarding Lassco corner rounders. They wanted to purchase both a CR-20 and a CR-50B. Their question was this, “Can I use the CR-20 die on the CR-50B and vice versa?” This was a great question and one I didn’t have the answer to, so looked into it.

After doing some research I discovered that the CR line of corner rounding dies will work on the CR-20, CR-50B, CR-50, CR-50P and CR-50XP. For the customer asking the question, this meant that the CR-20 1/8″, ¼”, 3/8″ and ½” dies can work on the CR-50B and vice versa.

The customer was happy because they only needed to purchase 2 sets of dies rather than 4 sets of dies. This ended up saving them money in the long run.

Lassco CR-50P Electric Corner Cutter Review

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Lassco CR-50B Corner CutterDo you work in the printing, greeting card or business card business? Do you handle card stock, report covers and other paper material? You may want to consider giving your printed material a leg up by cutting off those sharp corners and adding rounded corners. One great way to do this, on a high-volume basis, is by using the Lassco CR-50P electric corner cutter (found here). This is my review.

Lassco is our most popular manufacturer of corner rounders. Their CR-20 and standard CR-50 models are two of our best sellers. Lassco also makes a great selection of floor model corner rounders. Theses corner cutting machines are reliable, backed by great support and provide the option of interchangeable dies.

Corner rounders are often referred to as corner cutters, corner slitters and cornerounders. While some models of corner rounders are designed to cut just one or two sheets of paper, most are capable of handling hundreds of sheets of paper. The Lassco CR-50P is a great example. It can handle up to a ½” stack of paper in a single pass.

The Lassco CR-50P is very similar to its cousin, the CR-50, except the CR-50P features an electric motor. This electric motor is activated by pressing a foot pedal. I personally like the foot pedal operation as it allows you to manually handle and adjust the paper with two hands while cutting. The motor used is powered by 115 volts / 60 Hz.

Speed shouldn’t be too much of an issue. With a ½” cutting capacity, and the ability to make 30 strokes a minute, the weakest link in the speed of corner rounding will more than likely be the operator. It can pretty much keep up with you without any problems.

The CR-50P is a floor model. That means it doesn’t need to be placed on a desk or counter. It includes it’s own built-in stand that keeps the cutting surface at working level. The surface of the workbench is 17″ x 17″, making the CR-50P ideal for cutting small and large sheets of paper.

One thing I really like about the Lassco CR-50P is the socket design of the cutting dies. This machine makes it very easy to change from a 1/8″ die to a ½” die in just seconds. Simply pull the die you don’t need out of the socket and insert the new die. This corner cutter comes with one standard die of your choice, however, about 11 different dies are available. That makes this machine extremely versatile, and because the dies can be replaced, you’ll never be stuck with a dull corner rounder.

The build quality of this corner rounder is as good as you will find in the corner cutting industry. The metal and wood of this machine may remind you of something from a 50s army surplus store, but it is built to last. It weighs 112 pounds shipped and 90 pounds unpackaged. You won’t have any problem using this corner rounder on a daily basis for commercial and industrial applications. It’s that tough.

Can a Corner Rounder Cut Laminated Paper?

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Corner Rounders & CuttersWe have a lot of customers that call wanting to know if they can use a corner rounder on laminated paper. One such example is a customer who was laminating appraisal cards for valuable gems and jewelry. He wanted to cut the corners off to make the laminated cards look more professional, not to mention he felt the laminated corners were a little dangerous. This is the answer I gave him.

To begin with, our Lassco and Akiles corner rounders can easily handle stacks of paper, card stock and chipboard without a problem. The dies on these corner rounders have been designed from the ground up to handle most thicknesses of paper. Can they handle laminated documents? Yes, but with a small catch.

While these machines can round the corners on laminated documents, it can potentially cause the blade to dull at a slightly faster rate. I emphasize “slightly” in that sentence. You don’t need to worry about the blade dulling after rounding a few stacks of laminated documents. They actually handle laminated paper quiet well.

I have personally used the Lassco CR-20 corner rounder to round the corners on business cards I personally made in house using a business card cutter. The rounder cut the corners off the cards in seconds, literally hundreds of them at once. The end results looked great.

Lassco CR-60 Aluminum Sign Corner Rounder Review

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Lassco CR-60 Aluminum Sign Corner RounderIf you are in the sign making industry, you probably realize that a nice round corner is far safer than a sharp metal corner. For this reason, most sign makers lop off those sharp corners in exchange for safer round corners. One of the best ways to round the corners on signs is by using a machine like the Lassco CR-60 aluminum sign corner rounder (found here).

Lassco is well known for their huge line of paper corner rounders. Most of their corner rounders can handle several hundred sheets of paper at a time, including laminated material, but only one machine can handle aluminum.

The Lassco CR-60 is rated for cutting half hard aluminum up to .080″ thick. This is pretty impressive. This is due in part to the special design of the handle. The CR-60’s handle has been leveraged in such a way that it can produce up to a one ton press capacity. It is remarkably easy to use.

One really nice feature of the CR-60 is its ability to use interchangeable corner rounding die plates. Simply remove the die plate table you don’t need and add the correct size die plate table. The CR-60 is available with ½”, ¾”, 1″ and 1 ½” radii corner rounding die plate sizes. One die plate is included in the price of the machine.

The build quality on the CR-60 can’t be beat. It is a solid piece of machinery, weighing in at 38 pounds. It can be used on most tables and surfaces.

I highly recommend the Lassco CR-60 for aluminum sign corner cutting. It is reliable, solid and has a great track record with our customers.

Lassco CR-50B Corner Rounder Review

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Lassco-Wizer CR-50B Cornerounder / Corner Roundre / CutterDo you need to cut and trim the corners off of hundreds of sheets of paper at a time? This may be for creating cards, business cards and other projects. If this sounds like something you need to do, you may want to consider looking at the Lassco CR-50B corner rounder (found here). I have had the opportunity to use this little machine on several occasions and this is my review.

The Conerounder line from Lassco-Wizer is one of the most popular lines of corner rounders around. This includes the popular CR-20 and the CR-50B, which I am going to review. Lassco-Wizer also makes a wide range of other floor and desktop corner rounders, which you can find here.

To begin with, the CR-50B is a beefed up CR-20. A few of the improvements include a wider base, for larger paper, and a slightly longer handle. These improvements make the CR-50B ideal for more continuous, daily use.

The CR-50B uses special cutting dies to cut the corners off of paper. These dies come with different sizes of blades for different radius cuts. The corner rounder comes with your choice of several different corner cutting dies. Additional dies can be purchased and used.

Changing the dies on the CR-50B is very easy. The die fits in the base of the CR-50B like a socket. Simply lift the handle, pull the die out and push another die into the open socket. This process may seem simple, but it ends up being very stable. This is much easier than many other competitors that require you to use a tool to swap dies.

The table measures in at 9″ x 18″, making it very easy to cut letter-size and larger paper. This is a nice improvement over other corner rounders that have small bases. If the base is too small, paper will flop over the edge, making it hard to square-up the paper for cutting.

The CR-50B can cut through a stack of paper up to ½” thick. This can be standard copy paper or thicker card stock. I have even used this to round the corners on laminated paper without any issues. The cutting process is very easy, with the handle leveraged in such a way that very little effort is needed.

The CR-50B weighs in at 9 pounds, making it very light and easy to move around. Don’t let the light weight trick you into thinking it’s cheap. The build quality on this corner rounder is excellent.

Overall I consider the CR-50B to be one of the best (if not the best), manual tabletop corner rounders on the market. It is solid, easy to use and I love the option of being able to swap out cutting dies.

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Lassco Wizer Cornerounders and Corner CuttersCorners are just too dull, not to mention sharp. I don’t know what it is, but the simple process of rounding a corner can add a lot to a document. Take a business card for example. Sharp corners? Dull. Round corners? Cool.

Many people also like to round the corners on menus, playing cards, photographs, birthday cards and much more. So how can you round a lot of corners at once without sacrificing quality? It’s easy. Use a Lassco Wizer cornerounder. Cornerounders are often referred to as corner rounders and corner cutters.

Lassco has been making cornerounders for well over a decade and they have several time-tested models that get the job done well. I have personally used their entry-level CR-20 and can vouch for the fact that it is really easy to use. I never would have thought that cutting through a ½-inch stack of paper would be so easy. Lassco’s CR-60 cornerounder is even capable of cutting up to .080 aluminum.

Cornerounder and Corner Cutter Diamaters

So what are some of the most popular Lassco Wizer corner rounders our customers like to use? They are:

  • CR-20 Corner Cutter – Great corner cutter for cutting documents that fall within a 5″ x 10-1/2″ size up to ½-inch thick.
  • CR-50B Cornerounder – Very comparable to the CR-20 but with a larger 9″ x 18″ cutting base. Also capable of cutting a ½-inch stack of paper.
  • CR-50P Corner Rounder – This machine has all the quality of the desktop models but in a floor design. This corner rounder has an electric motor, making it ideal for continuous use.
  • CR-50XP Corner Cutter – This corenrounder is pneumatic, which means it is powered by an air compressor. This corner cutter is perfect for print shops, continuous and high-volume use.
