Duplo DB-280 Commercial Perfect Binding Machine Review

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Duplo DB-280 Perfect Binding MachineAre you familiar to what a paperback or softback book is? This is a book that consists of several pages that are glued to a cover, resulting in a bound book. While this description may sound simple, the process really isn’t that complicated. The process of binding paperback books is known as perfect binding. I would like to review one of the best semi-auto perfect binding machines on the market, the Duplo DB-280 (found here).

Perfect binding is extremely popular for binding paperback books, for padding paper and much more. You will find books, manuals, guides and even some magazines bound using perfect binding. The process usually involves some sort of hot glue that is rolled onto the flat edge of several sheets of paper after which the sheets are moved onto some sort of cover that is wrapped around the paper and crimped on. Once the glue is dry, the book is done.

The Duplo DB-280 is a perfect binding machine right down to its core. It is what I would consider to be a semi-automated machine. While it does apply glue and crimp the cover onto the booklet, you do have to manually insert the paper. The DB-280 is the first in a line of several heavy-duty perfect binding machines offered by Duplo. Other larger machines include the KB-4000 PUR, DPB-500 PUR and DPB-500.

The DB-280 is designed to be very easy to use and operate, taking just a few minutes to set the thickness of the glue and to make a few additional adjustments. It is rated at producing up to about 200 books per hour, making it a great machine for on-demand applications or for short-run use. It can be used to perfect bind books, but can also be used to simply apply glue to a stack of paper for padding purposes. It can also be used to apply tape to a spine for a unique look.

One of the biggest complaints of perfect binding machines is the odor. The DB-280 uses a unique glue formula that dramatically cuts down on smell, making it a great option for indoor use. This is a huge advantage over many cheaper machines out there that churn out loads of odor and smoke.

One thing I am impressed with about this machine is the quality. The DB-280 really does produce books that are completely professional and look equally as good as anything you’ll find on some of the larger floor machines. This machine does a great job of applying a smooth even layer of glue over the paper’s edge and you don’t need to worry about excess glue or mess squeezing or spilling out over the edges during the perfect binding process.

There are a few additional tools I recommend you consider using when perfect binding. The two additional tools I recommend include paper joggers and stack paper cutters. Here’s why I recommend using them:

  • Paper Joggers (found here) – When paper comes off a printing press or a copy machine, the paper is often off skews or jumbled around a bit. Paper joggers are used to square up the edges of paper by vibrating them together. Whenever we use a perfect binding machine out on our showroom floor, we almost always jog the paper prior to running them through the machine.
  • Stack Paper Cutters (found here) – If you’re worried about the edges of your book not being perfectly smooth (which is common), you may want to use a stack paper cutter. These cutters can handle hundreds of sheets of paper at a time and are commonly used to square up the three non-bound edges of the book.

The DB-280 is a robust machine and you may have additional questions prior to making a purchase. Please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788 with any questions. We accept credit cards, checks, purchase orders and you can even lease this machine. Our Service Department is able to provide additional parts, supplies and service as needed.

Duplo DF-920 Paper Folding MachineIf you are in the market for a programmable paper-folding machine and need something that is easy to set up, is extremely accurate and creates professional folds as good if not better than the competition, consider the Duplo DF-920 (found here). This machine has been around for years and is a favorite with printers, businesses, government agencies and more. One great way to learn more about this machine is to watch the Duplo DF-920 video demo that we just added to our site.

Before I show you the DF-920 video, I would like to cover just a few main points on what this machine is, what it does and why you may want to consider using it.

What is the DF-920? The Duplo DF-920 is an automatic paper-folding machine. It features a digital control panel, self-adjusting folding plates and is considered by many to be one of the best automatic paper folders available. It uses a friction-feed system that uses rubber rollers to pull paper in for folding.

What does the DF-920 do? This machine is designed to quickly take your paper and fold it into a letter fold, accordion fold, single fold and much more. It is built with 6 pre-programmed common folds and allows you to set up custom folds as needed. The feed tray holds 500 sheets of paper (about a ream) and has a powered exit conveyor that keeps paper neatly stacked as it is folded.

Why should you consider using the DF-920? You may want to consider using this machine for your business if you need to fold hundreds to thousands of sheets of paper per day. If you need a reliable machine that will hold up for years, this is the machine you need. Considered a commercial / industrial folding machine, it can be used with paper up to 11″ x 17″ in side and can be used with paper ranging from 16# bond up to 90# index. It is robust enough for high-volume folding, yet compact enough to be used on just about any desk or table.

Duplo DF-755 Paper Folding Machine Review

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Duplo DF-755 Paper Folding MachineDuplo paper folding machines are high in demand. This is due to history, reputation and several other factors. If you are looking for a Duplo folding machine, you may want to consider the Duplo DF-755 paper folding machine (found here). This is my review.

As mentioned earlier, Duplo paper folding machines have a great reputation along with a long history of making quality machines. I can remember a decade ago when Duplo was one of the few manufacturers with a fully-automatic paper folding machine. I personally have used several Duplo folding machines and they have always been solid.

The Duplo DF-755 is almost a carbon copy of their automatic machines, but with a little more manual setup. The DF-755 is known as a semi-automatic folding machine. This is because the folding plates still require some manual interaction, albeit very little.

Charts indicating the most common folds are printed on the two folding plates and simply require a slide of the folding plate to set up the fold. Knobs located on the ends of both folding plates allow for fine-tuned adjustments. The entire process takes just seconds, and in many instances, is faster than the automatic version.

The DF-755 is not designed for light-volume jobs. While it can handle the small stuff, the DF-755 finds its mark doing medium to medium-high volume folding jobs. It can be used to create letter folds, accordion folds, brochure folds, double folds and much more. Because the folding plates are adjustable, custom folds are easy to do as well.

The build quality on the DF-755 is exceptional. There are few manufacturers out there that make folding machines that play in this league. It kind of reminds me of those old diesel Mercedes that would log 500,000 plus miles without an overhaul. You will get a lot of mileage out of the Duplo DF-755.

Now for some specs. The DF-755 has a hopper that can hold up to 500 sheets of paper. That equals out to about a ream of paper. It can handle 13 lb. bond to 80 lb. index paper. The machine runs at a speed of 120 sheets per minute. A digital counter lets you know how many sheets of paper have been folded.

The exit tray uses a conveyor-style system. This allows the DF-755 to fold paper that needs to be kept in alphabetical or numerical order.

Overall I really like the Duplo DF-755. It is a solid paper folding machine that is great for copy centers, printing presses and other businesses.

Duplo V-417 Cut Sheet Burster Review

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Duplo V-417 Cut Sheet Burster & DetacherDo you need to burst apart and detach invoices, checks and other documents but can’t find the right machine to handle the paper you are using? It is possible what you may need is a cut sheet burster. One model you may want to look at is the Duplo V-417 cut sheet burster (found here). This is my review.

The most common bursters still available today are known as continuous form bursters and are designed to burst apart continuous form paper. This is the type of paper that has the perforated side margins with tiny holes. This paper was commonly used in the 80s for use in dot matrix printers. This paper is still commonly used by the government.

Many businesses, however, have no need for as continuous form burster as they typically use a laser printer that prints on one sheet at a time (cut sheet). Cut sheet paper is typically 8 ½ x 11-inches in size and includes a few perforations horizontally located on the paper. This is commonly used for printing checks, invoices and other material.

The Duplo V-417 is a cut sheet burster. This means you can take a stack of paper that has come off a laser printer, insert it into the document feeder after which the Duplo V-415 will take each sheet and burst (tear) it apart along the perforation. This saves hours of time versus manually tearing apart the paper.

The document feeder on the V-415 can hold up to 400 sheets of standard paper at a time using a top feeding system. It can handle paper ranging in thickness from 13 lb. bond up to 110 lb. index.

The V-415 can burst paper apart at a speed of up to 140 sheets per minute and keep the documents in sequential order. The variable speed motor lets you run the V-415 at 42, 64,
89, 114 or 140 sheets per minute.

The Duplo V-415 is extremely easy to set up. It has an easy-to-use control interface that allows the operator to adjust the distance between bursts, the speed of the burster and much more.

Duplo is known for making high-quality paper handling machines. As far as cut sheet bursting is concerned, you aren’t going to find many machines that compare to the Duplo V-415. The build quality is excellent and it is designed to continuously run every day without any maintenance issues.
