Top 10 Best Office Paper Shredders of 2013

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Best Paper Shredders 2013Office paper shredders need to be able to put up with a lot of daily use. You don’t want an office shredder that’s going to require a cool down time, period. For an office, you need something that is tough, time tested and capable of holding up for years. At ABC Office, we offer a huge selection of office paper shredders (found here). Many of these shredders are excellent products, however, I would like to point out 10 that have truly proven themselves as “best shredders” for 2013.

I have come up with criteria of 5 features you need to have in a solid office paper shredder.

  • Bin Size – I recommend you get a paper shredder that has at least a 10 gallon capacity. The larger the bin, the less you are going to have to empty it. I would put 10 gallons as the minimum size for an office.
  • Throat Size – I generally recommend you go with a paper shredder that has a throat width that is at least 10″. The first model I am going to recommend is 9.5″, but the rest are 10″ or wider. A 10″ throat width easily accommodates letter-size paper and the added width helps prevent jams.
  • Security – I recommend you use a paper shredder that uses a cross cut shredding pattern. I have found that a Level 3 is more than adequate security for most businesses.
  • Sheet Capacity – When it comes to sheet capacity, I recommend you buy a shredder that handles at least 10 sheets of paper at a time if not more.
  • Continuous Duty – I never recommend a shredder with a cool down period. I find it a nuisance and often a sign of cheap construction. I recommend you buy a shredder with a continuous duty motor that is thermally protected. All of the shredders I am going to recommend have continuous duty motors.

What is a Hopper Fed Paper Shredder?

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Hopper Feed Paper ShreddersDo you use, own or want a paper shredder but don’t want to hassle with jogging paper together to try and fit it all through a tiny slot on the top of a shredder? If this scenario sounds familiar to you, you may need what’s known as a hopper fed  paper shredder. These shredders are versatile and often ideal for office environments.

Hopper fed paper shredders are commonly used for office and departmental use as they are designed to be used by multiple people throughout they day. These types of paper shredders essentially feature a top loading feed hopper that sits above the paper shredders blades. They are typically designed for high-volume / continuous use.

The top loading feed hopper allows you to empty jumbled, disorganized and crumpled paper into the shredder. Some of these shredders allow you to dump an entire stack of paper, while other feed hopper shredders have a separate slot for stacks of paper. The hopper is often assisted by paddles that help pull paper into the shredder blades.

Shredders with feed hoppers are typically ideal for high-volume paper shredding and are known for their convenience. Because the hopper can take crumpled and jumbled paper, there is no need to tray and straighten or align paper prior to being fed into the shredder.

At ABC Office we offer a few different hopper-style shredders. Here are the four most popular models we offer:

  1. HSM 412.2 Office Hopper Fed Shredder
  2. Destroyit 4605 High-Volume Top Loading Feed Hopper Shredder
  3. Dahle 20452 and 20453 Strip and Cross Cut Hopper Shredders
  4. Intimus 852CC Industrial Top Loading Hopper Style Paper Shredder

Hopper fed shredders often accept entire magazines, newspaper and other paper. Some, like the Intimus 852CC industrial shredder, have hoppers that can even accept CDs, DVDs, credit cards, 3.5″ disks, passports, ID cards, Microfiche, audio cassettes and more.

This is a demo of the Destroyit 4605 high-volume hopper fed shredder.

I hope this helps you understand exactly what a top loading hopper fed paper shredder is. These shredders are convenient, great for high-volume shredding and are typically extremely fast. You can find our entire selection of paper shredders here.

What is a Cardboard Perforator?

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Martin Yale / Intimus PackMate Cardboard ShredderHave you ever heard the term cardboard perforator used before? I hadn’t either until I was writing up some descriptions for a couple of HSM ProfiPack cardboard shredders. HSM refers to their cardboard shredders as cardboard perforators. It makes sense, especially when you look at the cardboard shredding process.

If you’re not familiar with cardboard shredders, they are used to cut down cardboard boxes into either strips or into “waffle-cut” pieces for a variety of reasons. Waffle-cut cardboard does have more of a perforated than a shredded appearance to it. Most of our customers who own cardboard shredders use shredded cardboard as box filler or as cushioned packaging for mailing and shipping packages.

Shredded cardboard is remarkably effective at absorbing high shock impacts. Products packaged with shredded cardboard often turn out better than other packages using peanuts or air pockets. This is due in part to the sponge-like properties of shredded cardboard and the fact that shredded cardboard doesn’t move much during shipping.

Cardboard shredders are primarily purchased for the following reasons:

  • Free Packaging
  • Cardboard Recycling
  • Freeing Up Space

As previously mentioned, we offer three different cardboard shredders (perforators):

  1. Martin Yale PackMate Cardboard Shredder
  2. HSM ProfiPack 400 Cardboard Perforator
  3. HSM ProfiPack 425 Cardboard Shredder

All three of these models are solid machines. One unique feature that I personally like about the Martin Yale PackMate is that it can be used to not only shred cardboard, but newsprints and computer printouts. While shredding computer printouts is a great way to recycle paper as packaging, it is by no means confidential, so be sure your computer printouts do not contain any sensitive information.

I personally think that every warehouse should have a cardboard shredder. They are effective machines, easy to use and really help free up space in the warehouse.

Top 5 Best Paper Shredder Brands

MBM Destroyit Paper Shredders by IDEALFinding the right paper shredder is a pretty big deal, especially when you need a reliable model that can be used to destroy your most sensitive information. The only problem with shopping around for a good paper shredder is finding the right brand. I’ll be honest; a lot of the shredders out there are garbage. They may look pretty, with their plastic molded shells, but ultimately it’s what inside that counts.

I have personal experience with dozens of different makes, models and brands of shredders. Some shredders are remarkable feats of engineering genius, where others are little more than glorified garbage cans. Others are unable to run for more than 30 minutes without overheating, while even more sound like lawn mowers.

To help assist those of you who are shopping around, I have come up with a list of what I consider to be the top 5 best paper shredder brands available today.

Top 5 Best Paper Shredder Brands

  1. Destroyit – MBM Destroyit paper shredders (by IDEAL) are some of the best shredders around. They are designed and made in Germany. The cutting blades are some of the best around and these shredders are some of the easiest to use. These are perfect for continuous use in the office. There isn’t enough space in this article for me to write all the good things I have to say about Destroyit.
  2. Formax – Formax shredders are relatively new when compared to some of the other brands out there, but the build quality on these machines is excellent. Having sold these shredders for the last 5 or so years, our customers are always happy with what they receive. Formax makes some of the best office shredders around.
  3. Dahle – Sure they make paper cutters and folding machines, but they also make some excellent paper shredders too. Dahle paper shredders come in strip cut, cross cut and even high security models. Most Dahle shredders are German engineered and German made.
  4. HSM – HSM shredders are made from high quality components and are designed from the ground up to be safe and durable. HSM shredders range in size from deskside shredders to high-end commercial shredders.
  5. Intimus – Intimus, now owned by Martin Yale, still manufactures some of the best paper shredders available. This includes cross cut, strip cut, CD and high security designs. Intimus has been around for years and continues to make high-quality machines.

These shredders and manufacturers have demonstrated over the years that their paper shredders have what it takes to keep your information secure. I feel confident that you will not be disappointed in any of these paper shredder brands.

HSM ProfiPack 425 Cardboard Shredder Review

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

HSM ProfiPack 425 Cardboard ShredderAre you looking for an alternative way to package products for shipping? If you are using packing peanuts, you may want to consider using cardboard as an alternative packaging material. One great way to take unused boxes and turn them into free packaging is by using the HSM ProfiPack 425 cardboard shredder (found here). I have used this shredder and this is my review.

We live in a very environmentally conscious world today and are always looking for new and inventive ways to recycle. One great way to save your business money, recycle and be more environmentally conscious is by using a cardboard shredder like the ProfiPack 425. Cardboard is biodegradable and is a great alternative to foam packaging peanuts.

Another great benefit about cardboard packaging is that boxes are everywhere. If you run or operate a warehouse, you probably have empty boxes laying around. While some businesses dispose of boxes by using a compactor, others are beginning to discover that shredding them costs less and makes great packaging.

The HSM ProfiPack 425 is designed to quickly take boxes and shred them. Shredded cardboard does not have the same appearance as shredded paper. When a box is run through the ProfiPack 425, it maintains its shape and isn’t actually cut up into tiny pieces. Shredded cardboard has more of a waffle-like appearance, making it soft and pliable.

We actually have the ProfiPack 425 in our warehouse and we use it to create packaging every day. When you insert a piece of cardboard into the machine for shredding, it cuts the cardboard to a 16 ¾” width. Excess cardboard falls off to the side of the machine (where it can later be shredded).

It can be a little difficult to explain, so you can see a video demo of the ProfiPack 425 in action by going here.

The shredded cardboard is very easy to handle, stretch and manipulate. Many people have mentioned that it has a chain-link fence appearance. You can see an example here:

Shredded Cardboard Example

The ProfiPack 425 can easily handle about 2-3 layers of cardboard at a time. This means you don’t need to worry about cutting down the box prior to shredding it. Simply smash the box down flat and run it through the shredder.

The ProfiPack weighs in at 386 pounds shipped. While this is pretty heavy duty, don’t worry. It rests on casters that make the ProfiPack 425 very easy to move around.

Overall I consider the ProfiPack to be a solid machine. Having used it myself, I can definatley see the benefits of shredding cardboard and consider the Model 425 to be a great solution to just about any warehouse’s cardboard recycling and packaging needs.

You can find the HSM ProfiPack 425 cardboard shredder here. You can find our entire selection of cardboard shredders here.
