What Makes the Triumph 4305 Paper Cutter so Good?

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Triumph 4305 Stack CutterWhen it comes to manual stack paper cutters, very few even come close to holding a candle next to the MBM Triumph 4305 stack cutter (found here). This cutter is a third generation manual stack cutter, with its roots coming from the Triumph 3905 and Triumph 4205. There are many reasons why this cutter is considered to be one of the best and I would like to cover those features in this article.

First off, I would like to go on record saying that I have personally used this cutter. I have used it to cut stacks of standard 20# copy paper (hundreds at a time) to create notepads and business cards here in the office. While this is a manual paper cutter, I would argue that you can cut paper just as fast using this machine than an electric powered machine.

When you remove the top cover to this cutter, and compare the internal workings to other knockoffs, you really see the quality difference. There is a refinement, quality and build in this German paper cutter that you simply don’t find in other cutters. Other cutters appear to have been slapped together and grease slopped in during assembly. I have even seen circlips missing on knockoff cutters. The Triumph cutters are well put together and clearly high-end quality control measures are in place. For whatever reason, German paper cutters are the best…bar none.

What I find most remarkable about the Triumph 4305 is just how easy and how little manual effort you have to put into using this cutter. I have used other cutters where you almost had to hang on the handle and use all of your weight to cut through a stack. The triumph 4305 can cut through 1 ½” of paper in a single pass. This cutter is so beautifully geared that I can cut a stack of paper using a single finger, literally. Trust me, I’ve tried it. Don’t feel intimidated by this cutter.

The manual clamp on this cutter holds paper in place nicely. If you are cutting slick, glossy or coated paper, you may need to go with the Triumph 4705 (found here) as the slick paper may shift a little if the clamp isn’t securely in place. The spinning “hatch” style clamp on the 4705 is pretty much fool proof. That said, I think the Triumph 4305’s clamp is more than adequate for most jobs.

The backstop is very fine, although it is analog. The front hand crank is turned clockwise to bring the backstop forward and counterclockwise (anticlockwise) to take it back. A ruler on the side with an arrow lets you know exactly where the backstop is located. If this isn’t enough refinement for you, it also includes an optical cutting line (laser tool) that shines across the paper to let you know exactly where the blade will come down. Unless you need micrometer level measurements, I really thing this cutter is more than adequate for measuring in a cut. The backstop handcrank can be pulled forward and be disabled to prevent accidental backstop adjustments.

The cutting blade on this cutter is made from heavy duty forged Solingen steel. You can read more about Solingen steel by going here. The blade holds its edge like a razor and can be re-sharpened anywhere from 2-3 times (depending on wear and tear). The blade rests into a cutting stick. With the older models, such as the 3905, you had to fish the cutting stick out. With the new design, the cutting stick conveniently pulls out of the side.

As of this article, the MBM Triumph 4305 (by Ideal) includes the cutting stand. This option comes and goes, but is certainly something to keep your eye open for. In conclusion, I have to say that this is a great cutter. Does it cost more than many other cutters? Yes, but it will outlast those other cutters by years (literally).

Review of the MBM Bookletmaker Jr.

MBM Bookletmaker Jr Booklet Making MachineIf your business or organization prints and creates your own literature in-house, you may have the need of a booklet making machine. These machines are designed to fold and staple paper into booklets. We recently added the MBM Bookletmaker Jr. to our site (found here). I have had an opportunity to personally us this machine and would like to share my thoughts with you.

For starters, I have to say that I am very impressed with MBM as a company. They produce some of the nicest machines out there. You may have heard of some of their other machines such as Destroyit paper shredders, Kutrimmer guillotines and Triupmh stack cutters. Their machines feature sensible designs, are easy to use and they don’t cut corners in the manufacturing process.

Upon unboxing the Bookletmaker Jr., you may notice that it is very similar to other machines out there. Having used several machines myself, I have to say that the MBM Bookletmaker Jr. is very similar in look and operation to the Formax FD 160 (found here) and the ISP BookletMate (found here). The operation is almost identical. This isn’t to say that they are made in the same place, but the share a similar design.

There is very little setup required to use this booklet maker. It consists of a metal base, motorized rubber rollers and two staplers mounted to a arm. It is a fairly simple machine, but the subtleness of the machine is part of what makes it so incredible. It can be used with paper ranging from 8 ½” x 11″ up to 11″ x 17″. The guides, which help center the paper, auto center the staplers as they are lined up to the edges of the paper.

Once the paper is inserted, bring the stapler arm over to the other side (about a 180 degree motion) and press the arm down. This activates the staplers. This part of the process is manual. Once the stapling is complete, move the stapler arm back to its original position. The motor will automatically pull the paper and fold it in half. Voila! You have a booklet.

I found that I was able to insert the paper, staple it and fold the paper in about 3-5 seconds. It is a very efficient process, however, I would still rate this machine for light to medium volume use simply because there is still enough manual effort involved that an operator wouldn’t want to repeat this process over and over again on a large scale. If you need to create hundreds to thousands of booklets, go with a fully automatic / electric machine.

This machine is ideal for use in schools, churches and businesses. It is definitely portable, at 40 pounds shipped, but isn’t something that you want to move around on a regular basis. It is light enough to be used on most tables and desks. Aesthetically it is a very nice looking machine that I feel will blend in with most office environments.

The MBM Bookletmaker Jr. has a 10 sheet stapling capacity. That is based on standard 20# copy paper. The sheet capacity will be less if you are using card stock. Because it can staple 10 sheets of paper, it can bind a booklet of 40 pages (front and back / side to side).

Would I consider using this machine for my own booklet making operations? You bet. It is backed by a one-year warranty and the support from us (at ABC Office) and MBM will keep you happy. It should hold up for years without causing you any issues.

You can find the MBM Bookletmaker Jr. here and our entire selection of booklet making machines here. We are one of the most reputable online dealers of office equipment online (in business since 1980) and we offer some of the best prices available online. Paper Folding Machines: When Quality Matters

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

MBM 93M Entry-Level Paper Folding MachineYou’ll be hard pressed to find someone that says the economy is booming right now. Most businesses and individuals are strapped for cash and trying to squeeze as much as they can out of their budgets. While I understand budgets only allow for so much, there is one piece of office equipment you shouldn’t be cheap with…paper folding machines. I’ll explain why.

I recently had a conversation with a customer who had a broken MBM 87M paper folding machine. They were looking at possibly buying the replacement model, the MBM 93M. They asked me if improvements had been made to make it better and fix previous issues. I was a little taken aback. The MBM 87M was considered to be a decent machine and had a great track record. I decided to ask a few questions.

QUESTION: What type of fold are you creating?

ANSWER: We create a letter fold. This is being used at a university.

I thought to myself, “No problem here.” The 87M was perfect for creating letter folds. I decided to ask another question.

QUESTION: How many sheets do you typically fold in a day?

ANSWER: We will sometimes fold 3,000 to 5,000 sheets a day and then nothing for the rest of the month.

It was then that I discovered the problem. While the 87M was a good machine, it was never intended to fold that many sheets a day. The 87M, a machine that only cost a few hundred dollars, was designed to fold a few hundred sheets a day. Folding 3,000 to 5,000 on the 87M in a single day was like using a 1970 AMC Gremlin to race in a Grand Prix.

Intelli-Fold DE-102AF Paper Folding MachineI went on to explain that they would probably experience the same issues with the MBM 93M. They informed me that their university was cash strapped and they couldn’t afford much more.  I went on to explain that they needed to at least go with a folding machine like the Intelli-Fold DE-102AF. This folding machine, while not designed for high-volume paper folding, can handle a few thousand sheets in a day every so often without breaking down.

I can’t begin to stress enough how important it is to get a good paper folding machine. Trying to stretch a budget, and go with a cheaper product, will almost always lead to frustration and a short-lived machine.

If you are strapped for cash, and need to find a good machine for your money, please feel free to call us at 1-800-658-8788 and speak with one of our paper folding machine specialists. They are skilled and able to answer your folding machine questions and point you in the right direction. We want to provide you with a machine that is designed to hold up for years, not months.

MBM Destroyit 2604 Paper Shredder Video Demo

MBM Destroyit 2640 Paper ShredderIf you were to ask me what my favorite mid-volume office paper shredder is, I would have to answer with the Destroyit 2604 from MBM. This paper shredder is one of the most solid machines I have used and I personally use it to shred my own documents. Having used this shredder for over a year now, I can attest to its excellent build quality, reliability and value. We were able to shoot a video demo of it about a week ago.

There are many reasons why Destroyit shredders are considered to be the best office paper shredders. As mentioned earlier, the build quality is unprecedented. The 2604 is German engineered and German built. The quality really shines through. I have used paper shredders from China, Korea the USA and many other places and German shredders continue to be my favorite.

The build quality on this shredder is amazing. The cabinet is made from solid wood construction and the shredder head features sound insulation, thermal protection and hardened steel blades. The cabinet is easy to access, the bin is easy to empty and the entire shredder sits on casters, making it easy to wheel around the office. I can see 6-8 people being able to use this thing through the day without any problems.

You can buy the 2604 in a cross cut or a strip cut design. The Level 3 cross cut is my personal favorite as it brings added security (tinier particles), yet still has a nice 20-22 sheet cutting capacity. I would like to mention that this shredder is fast.

This is a video demo of the MBM Destroyit 2604 cross cut in action:

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

The bin on this shredder is 26 gallons, which means it will hold a lot of paper. I especially like the automatic oiler. While oiling a shredder is important, it is extremely easy to forget to do it. The auto oiler on this shredder keeps things lubed at all times. A few of the features include:

  • “SPS” (Safety Protection System) package
  • Automatic reverse and power cut-off (avoids paper jams)
  • Automatic power cut-off when shred bin is full or when cabinet door is opened
  • “ESM” (Energy Saving Mode) after 1 hour of inactivity
  • Automatic start and stop controlled by photo cell
  • “ECC” (Electronic Capacity Control): Indicates sheet capacity levels
  • Shreds staples, paper clips, credit cards, and CDs (strip- and cross-cut models)
  • Sturdy “twin drive system” with dust-proof gear box housing
  • 26 gallon shred volume (approximate)
  • An automatic oiler is included for optimal performance.

So there you have it! One of my favorite paper shredders. You can find the MBM Destroyit 2604 paper shredder here and our entire selection of Destroyit paper shredders here.

MBM Triumph 4315 Stack Paper Cutter Review

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

MBM Triumph 4315 Electric Stack Paper CutterIf you handle a lot of paper, perhaps hundreds of sheets at a time, you may be familiar with stack paper cutters. Stack cutters quickly cut paper down into smaller, more manageable sizes. One great example of a stack cutter is the MBM Triumph 4315 stack paper cutter (found here). This is my review.

MBM (by IDEAL) is the largest and most prominent manufacturer of paper cutters in the United States. Their line of cutters includes rotary trimmers, guillotine cutters and stack cutters. They also manufacturer a huge line of paper shredders under the name of Destroyit. All these products feature precision German engineering and are made in Germany. Needless today, MBM products have a great reputation.

The MBM Triumph 4315 is what’s known as a semi-automatic stack cutter. This is because it utilizes both manual and electric functions. It is also designed for medium-volume use. You will find the 4315 in copy centers, print shops and in businesses that handle, print and cut paper on a regular basis.

As mentioned earlier, the Triumph 4315 is semi automatic. The cutting process is all electric. A motor, enclosed in the cutter, powers a German Solingen steel blade. Manual operation involves adjusting the backstop and engaging the clamp.

Solingen steel is considered by many to be the highest grade of steel available in the world. Knives, kitchen blades and other high-end cutting products are made from Solingen steel. The Solingen blade in the Triumph 4315 is not only excellent quality, but it is also razor sharp. It is designed to hold an edge for a long time. Don’t worry, however, about once it becomes dull. The cutting knife can be re-sharpened.

The manual backstop on the 4315 us adjusted by turning a hand crank located on the front of the machine. This hand crank turns a spindle that pulls the backstop forward or pushes it back. Measurements, based on the position of the backstop, are displayed on the front of the machine via a digital display. This can be toggled between inches or centimeters, depending on your preference.

Have I mentioned that this thing is accurate? This isn’t only because of the razor-sharp blade or the precision backstop. It also utilizes an LED optical cutting line. This line is calibrated with the blade, displaying to the operator exactly where the blade will make the cut. This is excellent for “eyeballing” cuts.

While I still recommend exercising safety, the Triumph 4315 is an extremely safe cutter. It utilizes a combination of clear plastic guards that prevent use when open. These guards protect all cutting aspects of the machine. The front of the machine also requires a key, a safety switch to be turned on and two-handed operation for activating the cutter. It is safe all the way around.

This is a video of the Triumph 4315 and other MBM stack cutters in action:

The MBM Triumph 4315 does not have the ability to store custom jobs, but calibrations and adjustments take just seconds. Because neither the clamp nor the backstop is electric, it isn’t recommended for high-volume cutting. It can still easily, however, handle repetitive cutting throughout the day without skipping a beat.

I highly recommend using this stack paper cutter for your cutting jobs up to 16 7/8″ wide and up to 1 ½” thick. You won’t be disappointed.

MBM Destroyit 2404 Paper Shredder Review

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

MBM Destroyit Deskside Paper ShredderA professional and customer-oriented business will use a paper shredder when handling sensitive documents. A good reliable office shredder should meet a few solid requirements. This includes reliability, high sheet capacity, a good security level and the ability to shred paper on a continuous basis. One shredder that hits every one of these marks is the MBM Destroyit 2404 paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

If you’ve read any of my paper shredder reviews, you probably know that I am a huge fan of Destroyit paper shredders. I have personally used dozens of different paper shredders and the German engineered Destroyit paper shredders continue to do exactly what I need. Destroyit, by MBM, makes shredders in sizes that range from deskside to industrial designs.

The MBM Destroyit 2404 is available in two different designs. This includes a strip cut and a cross cut model. While the cross cut version is by far the most popular, the strip cut is still a great shredder. The biggest differences between the two are the sheet capacity and the security level.

MBM Destroyit 2404 Sheet Capacities:

  • 2404 Strip Cut: 19 to 22 sheets of paper at a security level 2 (3/16″ wide strips).
  • 2404 Cross Cut: 9-11 sheets of paper at a security level 3 (3/32″ x 5/8″ particles).

The Destroyit 2404 features a 9 ½” wide opening for paper. This is wide enough to handle envelopes, letter-size and legal-size documents, receipts and much more. It can even be used to shred wider computer forms paper if they are first folded in half. The powerful ¾ horsepower motor doesn’t stutter, handling fed paper with gusto.

This shredder is extremely easy to operate. The “Easy Switch” rocks back and forth to turn the shredder on, put it in reverse and turn it off. A series of color codes and backlit symbols let you know exactly what’s going on.

The Destroyit 2404 is almost completely automated. A built-in photo cell detects paper, turning the shredder on and off by itself. Sensors also let you know when the bag is full and the door is open. For a deskside shredder, these features are all welcome.

This is a video of the MBM Destroyit 2404 in use:

One of my favorite features of the Destroyit 2404 is the large 13-gallon shred bin. This is a fairly large and significant capacity for a deskside shredder. This means fewer bag changes for you.

The shredder itself is made from high quality components. This includes hardened steel cutting shafts that are covered by a lifetime warranty. The shredder head sits in a noise absorbing wooden cabinet that sits on casters and the gars are all enclosed in a dust-proof housing, which significantly extends the life of the shredder. The motor is thermally protected for continuous use (no need to worry about overheating).

In conclusion, I have to say that the Destroyit 2404 (Cross Cut or Strip Cut) is a great choice for use in the office. While it is a deskside shredder, multiple people can easily use it throughout the day. I highly recommend this shredder.

MBM Destroyit 3104 Cross Cut Paper Shredder (Level 3) Review

Friday, May 27th, 2011

MBM Destroyit 3104 Cross Cut Paper ShredderWhen shopping for a paper shredder, chances are that you want something that’s affordable, a great value and reliable. It is possible to find the right shredder that hits all the points your business needs. One great option for a small business or organization is the Destroyit 3104 cross cut paper shredder from MBM (found here). This review will cover its various qualities, specifications and if any, weaknesses.

If you’re new to the paper shredder industry, or are simply not familiar with MBM, let me get you up to speed. While there are a lot of “OK” brands out there, Destroyit is considered to be the “crème de la crème” of shredders. In other words, businesses and government entities that do a lot of shredding often go with the Destroyit shredders.

There are a lot of reasons why Destroyit shredders are so highly regarded, and the Destroyit 3104 cross cut shredder hits all these points. To begin with, the Destroyit 3104 is a German engineered and built shredder. This means it has been put together with the highest-quality parts available, unlike many comparable shredders that are built with “budget” parts.

While I personally think any business would be happy with the Destroyit 3104 cross cut, it is best suited for use in small to medium-size businesses or as a departmental shredder. I would say this shredder could easily be used constantly throughout the day by 5-10 people without a problem. By constant, I am referring to heavy use.

The MBM Destroyit 3104 utilizes a thermally protected motor that is designed to be used continuously without suffering from overheating. Many shredders require a cool down period. Not so with the 3104. The 3104 uses a 1 horsepower (0.64 KW) single phase motor that runs on 110-120 volts of electricity. The motor is powerful, fast (18 feet per minute) and reliable.

I remember years ago when we used to tell customers to remove paper clips and staples (if possible) prior to shredding paper. The Destroyit 3104 uses a strong hardened steel cutting shaft that can easily handle staples and paper clips without suffering any damage. It can also be used to not only shred paper, but credit cards, DVDs and CDs as well. MBM is so confident in the cutting shafts that they are covered by a lifetime warranty.

The control panel on the Destroyit line of shredders, including the Destroyit 3104, is one of the easiest-to-use available today. IF you look at the picture, you will see a large round button. MBM calls this the “Easy Switch.” You can run pretty much every operation on this shredder from that button. It tilts to turn the shredder on or put it in reverse and built-in backlit symbols let you know the status of the shredder. This includes when the cabinet door is open and the bag is full.

This is a video demo of the Destroyit 3104 in use:

The throat on this shredder measures in at 12″, which is more than enough for most paper, forms and documents. The sheet capacity on this shredder is 22-25 sheets at a time, which is impressive for a level 3 cross cut shredder. Once shredded, paper is turned into tiny 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm) particles. A large 32-gallon bin holds the shredded paper, which is pretty large. This means fewer bag changes for you!

Overall I have to give this shredder a solid 5 out of 5 stars. I am confident you will enjoy this shredder. It should provide you with years of reliable use.

You can find the Destroyit 3104 cross cut paper shredder here and our entire line of Destroyit paper shredders here. We also offer a great selection of other brands. You can find our entire selection of paper shredders here.

MBM Destroyit 3804 Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

MBM Destroyit 3804 Cross Cut Paper ShredderWhat is it that you want in your office paper shredder? Most people would respond that they need speed, security, capacity and reliability. If these four points sound like something you need in a machine, consider looking at the MBM Destroyit 3804 cross cut paper shredder (found here). This is my review.

MBM Destroyit (known as IDEAL in Europe) have been making shredders for decades. One thing remains constant, their shredders are considered to be some of the best in the industry. Shredder designs and styles range from home office up to industrial shredding. The Destroyit 3804 is one of the latest additions to this tradition.

The MBM Destroyit 3804 cross cut shredder encompasses pretty much everything I would want in a paper shredder. Let me start with capacity. This shredder hits high capacities on just about every level.

To begin with, the Destroyit 3804 has a massive 44-gallon shred bin. Consider the fact that most cars have a 15-25 gallon gas tank. This shredder can hold about double that amount in shredded paper. This means much fewer bag changes for you and makes it possible for multiple people to use this shredder without the “Bag Full” indicator always being on.

Another “capacity” feature of this shredder is the wide capacity shredder throat. This machine can shred paper up to 16″ wide. That means you can shred a lot of small stuff or larger computer forms. Not only can you feed paper into this beast, but it can also handle shredding credit cards and CDs and will accept staples and paper clips without a hitch.

The next feature that impresses me is the speed. While the Destroyit 3804 cross cut already has an impressive 20-22 sheet shredding capacity, it can shred that paper at a speed of 20 feet per minute. That means you can shred over a football field’s length of 20-20 sheets in an hour. That’s just plain fast.

Also consider the fact that this shredder cuts paper down to a Level 3 security level, which is the most sought-after security level for office paper shredding. That means the Destroyit 3804 CC cuts paper into 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm). Break out a ruler and measure that out. Small….right? You aren’t putting that back together.

Shredding speed, capacity and security all make this shredder perfect for departmental and centralized office shredding. Now let’s cover the “dependability” part of this review.

While I love stuff made in the USA, I have complete respect for German products. German shredders are THE benchmark when it comes to office paper shredders. From the hardened steel blades to the twin drive single-phase motor, this shredder is designed for heavy-use.

Even the motor has been thermally protected for continuous use. You will never have to wait 30 minutes for the motor to cool down with a Destroyit paper shredder.

In summary, you can do much better than a Destroyit paper shredder, and the Destroyit 3804 cross cut is one of the best options you have for office paper shredding. The build quality is excellent, it is reliable, secure and very fast. I use Destroyit shredders here at ABC Office and love them.

You can find the MBM Destroyit 3804 cross cut paper shredder here, our entire selection of Destroyit paper shredders here and our huge selection of all our paper shredders here.

Top 10 Best Manual Stack Paper Cutters

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Manual Stack Paper CuttersStack paper cutters offer a great blend of affordability and high-capacity paper cutting. There are a lot of stack paper cutters out there. Having used stack paper cutters for over a decade, I am in a position to provide you with some good shopping advice. I will provide you with some great brand suggestions and will recommend some reliable stack cutter models that you will be happy with.

In case you’re not familiar with manual stack paper cutters, they are special cutters designed to cut hundreds of sheets of paper at a time. They typically have some sort of clamping mechanism that keeps paper in place and usually have a long cutting handle (about 2-3 feet long) that you pull down to cut stacks of paper.

Now that we understand what a stack paper cutter is, let’s start off with some recommended brands. Who do I consider to be best when it comes to manual stack paper cutter manufacturing?  I have to say hands down that Triumph is THE best brand of stack paper cutters. While there are many clones, and other cheap “budget” models out there, nothing comes close to the accuracy and machine finesse.

I would have to say that Intelli-Cut (by Intelli-Zone) and Dahle come in a very close second. Both of these brands offer several manual stack cutter models that are easy to use, are extremely affordable and are very accurate.

These are the stack paper cutters that I consider to be the best in the industry:

Top 10 Best Manual Stack Paper Cutters

  1. MBM Triumph 4305 16 7/8″ Manual Stack Paper Cutter
  2. MBM Triumph 4705 18 ¾” Manual Stack Paper Cutter
  3. Intelli-Cut 530D 17″ Stack Paper Cutter w/ Digital Display
  4. Tamerica GuilloMax Plus 18″ Manual Stack Cutter
  5. Intelli-Cut 580M 18 7/8″ Manual Stack Cutter
  6. Dahle 846 & 848 Stack Paper Cutters
  7. Dahle 842 17″ Manually Operated Stack Cutter
  8. Intelli-Cut 530M Manual 18 7/8″ Stack Cutter
  9. Intelli-Cut 580D 18 7/8″ Stack Cutter w/ Digital Display
  10. Dahle 852 17″ Premium Stack Cutter

These 10 paper cutters all have a great track record with our customers, feature high-quality components and should save you time by quickly and accurately cutting hundreds of sheets of paper at a time. You can find our entire selection of stack paper cutters here.
