Christmas Scrapbooking Paper Trimmer Gift Ideas

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

Carl RT-200 Scrapbooking Rotary Paper TrimmerIf you are looking for a great gift idea for your mother, sister, wife or good friend, you may want to consider a rotary paper trimmer or cutter (found here). These devices are perfect for people that love to scrapbook and can be used to cut down photographs, scrapbook paper, card stock, regular paper and more. At ABC Office, we offer a huge lineup of rotary trimmers and I would like to recommend a few favorites that you may want to consider as a Christmas gift.

Keep in mind that these recommendations are for “good” rotary paper trimmers and not for cheap models that will easily break.

Christmas Paper Trimmer Gift Ideas

  • Carl RT-200 (found here) – I would like to start off with this cutter as it is one that I purchased my own wife for her scrapbooking projects. It is one that many people love to use because it features interchangeable trimming blades. Pattern examples include the B-03 deckle cut, the B-04 shorwave blade, the B-06 scallop blade, the B-08 Victorian blade and several others. Counting the straight blade, there are 10 different blades available. As far as the cutter itself goes, it works well and is excellent for individual use.
  • Carl RT-200N Rotary Paper TrimmerCarl RT-200N (found here) – For the environmentally conscious family member, we have the Carl RT-200N. It is very similar to the standard RT-200, but is made entirely of recycled materials and includes a light gathering clamp that makes it easier to see what you are cutting. This is excellent for scrapbooking, however, unique patterned blades are not available.
  • Carl DC-95N (found here) – This is an affordable rotary cutter and makes a great stocking stuffer. This tiny cutter is designed for cutting smaller material (up to 6″ long) and is ideal for its portability. This cutter is also made entirely out of recycled materials.
  • Carl DC-300N (found here) – This rotary trimmer is the answer to a scrapbooker’s dreams. It includes a built in handle, can cut up to 20 sheets of paper at a time up to 12″ long and has a small compartment where replacement blades can be stored. It features an easy-to-use cutting guide, an ergonomic cutting handle and a light-enhancing clamp. It is also made from recycled materials.
  • Carl DC-210N Personal Rotary TrimmerCarl DC-210N (found here) – Do you need a trimmer that is a little tougher than the other stuff out there? The DC-210N has a 12″ cutting length and can cut up to 36 sheets of 20# bond paper at a time! This tough little cutter features a grid and pattern on the base that makes it easy to do “common” cutting patterns. The DC-210N is totally green (not literally) being made entirely out of recycled materials.
  • Rotatrim Mastercut (found here) – This paper cutter, made by Rotatrim, is a great low to medium-volume cutter. It is designed to create straight and seamless cuts and features a self-sharpening blade design that helps keep the round blade razor-sharp for a long time. This is ideal if you are cutting material that typically dulls the blades on most other cutters. This is still a great gift idea and is excellent for trimming a wide range of paper, photos and other material.
  • Carl DC-238N (found here) – If you are looking for a heavy-duty rotary cutter as a Christmas gift, the DC-238N is one of the most affordable we offer. This cutter can cut a sheet of paper up to 18″ long and has a 36 sheet cutting capacity. The DC-238N is made from recycled materials and also includes a handy adjustable side guide and illuminating paper clamp. Because of its capacity, this cutter is excellent for cutting thicker coverstock, laminated materials and more.
  • Rotatrim Professimal M Series Rotary TrimmerRotatrim Professional (found here) – If you are looking for the Crème de la Crème cutter that is the envy of every scrapbooker and even photographer, the Rotatrim Professional is your best choice. This cutter is made in England, features a dual rail system for supporting the cutting head, has a solid wood base and uses a self-sharpening cutting blade. This cutter can handle a wide range of material and is designed to last for literally years. This is the rotary cutter the professionals use.

Hopefully this list has helped you find a few good rotary trimmer Christmas gift ideas for that loved one. We have been selling scrapbooking paper cutters and trimmers for years, so feel free to give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. You can find our entire selection of rotary paper cutters and trimmers here.

Shopping for 18″ Rotary Paper Cutters – Q&A

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Rotary Paper CuttersI recently had a conversation with a customer that was looking for an 18″ rotary paper cutter (found here). They had several good questions. Upon passing a few questions and answers back and forth, I was able to come up with some great options for the customer. I would like to share some of those questions and answers in an effort to try and help you find the right paper cutter for your applications.

  • Customer: We do a lot of our own printing and cutting in house, and I mean a lot. We need a new paper cutter and need something that can trim down anything from cardstock to labels. What type of paper cutter do you recommend?
  • Me: You mention you cut a lot of paper. Just how much do you cut at a time?
  • Customer: We need something that can cut multiple sheets of paper, but the most important feature we need is to be able to see exactly where the cut will be made. Many of the cutters we use make it difficult if not next to impossible to see where the cut will be made.
  • Me: If you need to see exactly where the cut will be made, you may want to consider one of our MBM Kutrimmer paper cutters (found here). Many of them now feature an optical cutting line, making it easy to see where the cut will be made.
  • Customer: Thank you for the suggestion, but I am more interested in a rotary paper cutter. I like how compact the rotary cutters are and need something that won’t get in the way. I need something that has an 18″ cutting length.
  • Me: When it comes to rotary paper cutters, the Rotatrim Professional Series (found here) are considered to be the best. The cutting head slides along two rails for added stability and you can get a good idea on where the cut will be made thanks to the included clamping mechanism. It also comes in an 18″ version.
  • Customer: I really like that cutter, but am not sure if I will be able to fit it into my budget. Do you have a couple of additional recommendations? I need 3 different models in order to make a decision.
  • Me: While the Rotatrim Professional is my first choice, Dahle makes some great rotary cutters. Their Model 552 Professional Rotary Cutter (found here) is 20 1/8″ long. While it is slightly longer than 18″, it is still a great option that is both affordable and currently features free shipping.  Another affordable option is the Rotatrim Mastercut (found here). There is an 18″ Mastercut available and it is also extremely affordable. While it isn’t quite as heavy-duty as the Rotatrim Professional Series, it does use a square rail that provides a lot of support to the cutting head.
  • Customer: You have been a great help. I will hand this list off to my Purchasing Manger and let him choose from there.

So there you have it! These are some great questions and answers you may even want to ask yourself when shopping around for a paper cutter. If you have questions that need answers, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-658-8788. You can find our entire selection of rotary paper cutters here.

What is the Best Rotatrim Paper Cutter for You?

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Rotatrim Paper CuttersIf you were to ask me which brand of rotary paper cutter is the best, I would have to say that Rotatrim is easily in my top 3 favorite brands. Rotatrim paper cutters, made in the UK, have taken the opposite approach of many other paper cutter manufacturers. While many companies out there are looking for ways to trim costs and replace metal with plastic, Rotatrim has kept their same high-quality process for decades.

While Rotatrim has literally a dozen or more different models of cutters, they are ultimately lumped together into 4 different categories. These are the Rotatrim Mastercut MC Series trimmers, Rotatrim Professional M Series cutters, the Rotatrim Technical T Series and the Rotatrim Powertech PT line of cutters. I will explain what these different lines of cutters are and why they may be what you need.

Rotatrim was founded in 1966 and is currently the largest specialist manufacturer of rotary action cutters in the world. These British paper cutters are internationally renowned for their durability, versatility and safety. Their cutters utilize extremely tough Sheffield tungsten steel and are known for their excellent build quality.

Types of Rotatrim Paper Cutters:

Rotatrim Mastercut MC Series Rotary Paper CuttersRotatrim Mastercut MC Series Rotary Cutters – The Rotatrim Mastercut MC series cutters, formerly known as the Monorail series, is Rotatrim’s entry level cutter. A cutting wheel sits in a housing that slides along a single square-shaped bar. The base features a grid of common cutting patterns as well as a ruler for alignment purposes. This paper cutter is ideal for home or small business use. While it is Rotatrim’s entry-level cutter, it is still far superior to other brands when it comes to quality. You can find our Rotatrim Mastercut MC series cutters here.

Rotatrim Professional M Series Paper CuttersRotatrim Professional M Series Rotary Cutters – This is the most popular line of Rotatrim paper cutters. The Professional M series cutters, formerly known as Mastercut, are increadibly popular with photographers, copy centers, graphic artists and other people that require absolute precision when cutting material. This cutter has been around for over 40 years and features a solid laminated MDF gridded baseboard, as well as twin chrome plated steel guide rails and a hand-finished tungsten steel blades.

Because the Professional line of rotary cutters uses 2 rails, precision is about as good as you can get in a rotary blade style cutter. A self-sharpening blade keeps the blade sharp and a grid / ruler pattern on the base makes it easy to line up cuts. You can find our Rotatrim Professional M Series rotary cutters here.

Rotatrim Technical T Series Rotary Paper CuttersRotatrim Technical T Series Industrial Rotary Cutters – The Technical T series of Rotatrim paper cutters are designed for heavy-duty use and come in lengths up to 99″ long. These cutters feature a stainless steel 1 ½” square guide rail and a self sharpening Sheffield tungsten steel cutting wheel and counterblade. A built in transparent clampstrip keeps material in place during the cutting process. Most of the Technical cutters can handle up to 4mm of flexible sheet material. This includes pop-ups, posters, vinyls, banners and more. You can find our Rotatrim Technical T Series cutters here.

Rotatrim Powertech PT Series Rotary Paper CuttersRotatrim Powertech PT Electric Rotary Cutters – The Rotatrim Powertech PT electrically driven precision trimmers are some of the most powerful and capable commercial rotary cutters available. These cutters utilize a Sheffield tungsten steel blade that is powered by an electrically driven steel reinforced belt. A pneumatic foot pedal allows for easy hands-free operation. The longest Powertech cutter is 99″, which can be used to cut posters, banners, vinyls, maps, blueprints and much more (up to 4mm thick). You can find our entire selection of Rotatrim Powertech PT Series cutters here.

Regardless of the type of Rotatrim paper cutter you decide to use, you will be happy with it. I personally love it when a customer purchases a Rotatrim paper cutter because I know there won’t be any customer service issues later down the road.

Top 5 Best Rotatrim Professional Rotary Paper Cutter Alternatives

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Rotatrim Professional Paper CuttersRotatrim easily makes some of the best rotary paper cutters available. They feature an excellent build quality, extremely accurate cuts and they seem to last for years. If you are on a budget, however, you may not be able to afford a Rotatrim Professional paper cutter. So are there some other brands that compete on a “Rotatrim” level that are more affordable?

I have a tough time saying that “more affordable” cutters are equal to a Rotatrim, but there are some pretty good contenders out there. I have come up with a list of some great Rotatrim alternatives that are still a great value. These cutters should still provide you with excellent cuts and great durability, all for a great price.

Top 5 Best Rotatrim Professional Rotary Paper Cutter Alternatives

  1. Dahle 500 Series Professional Rolling Paper Cutters – The Dahle 500 series of professional rolling paper cutters are by far the top alternative to Rotatrim. They are very popular for cutting down photographs, card stock and other paper.
  2. Dahle 400 Series Premium Rolling Paper Cutters – The Dahle 400 series of premium rolling paper cutters are hot. They are affordable, are available in different lengths and are still very accurate.
  3. Foster Econocut Rotary Paper Trimmers – These paper cutters aren’t able to handle the high-volume of the Rotatrim Professional series, but are still an excellent alternative for light to medium volume cutting. The Foster Econocut line of cutters is accurate and easy to use.
  4. Akiles Roll@Blade Rotary Paper Trimmer – The Akiles line of Roll@Blade paper cutters are accurate and extremely affordable. The only downside is that they are only available in a couple of sizes.
  5. Rotatrim Mastercut (Monorail) Paper Cutter – The Mastercut line of paper cutters, from Rotatrim, use a square bar for stabilization. These cutters are a great alternative to the “professional” line of Rotatrim paper cutters.

This list of paper cutters should help you find a great cutter at an affordable price. While I still think the Rotatrim Professional line of cutters is THE king of the hill, these other cutters are definitely great contenders. You can find our entire line of rotary paper cutters here.

Rotatrim Professional “M” and Mastercut “MC” Rotary Paper Cutter Confusion

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Rotatrim Professional "M" Series Rotary Paper CutterI had a customer call me a while back that was confused as to the difference between the Rotatrim Professional and the Rotatrim Mastercut rotary paper cutters. I can understand this. Rotatrim has undergone some unusual name changes over the past few years. Hopefully I can clarify the differences between these cutters in this post.

To begin with, the Rotatrim Professional “M” series of paper cutters is currently Rotatrim’s highest-end paper cutter for precision tabletop cutting of photographs, paper, cardstock and other material. The Professional “M” series used to be called the Mastercut series about 5+ years ago.

This means if you are looking for the OLD Mastercut series cutter, you will now need to look for the Professional “M” series line of Rotatrim cutters. They are literally the exact same paper cutter, but with a different name. I have used the new Professional and the old Mastercut and they feel and work in the exact same way.

The Professional “M” series of rotary cutters from Rotatrim feature two round rails that support a heavy-duty cutting head. These two bars provide exceptional support and accuracy during the cutting process.

Rotatrim Mastercut –> Now Rotatrim Professional “M”
Rotatrim Monorail –> Now Rotatrim Mastercut “MC”

Rotatrim Mastercut "MC" Series Monorail Paper CutterRotatrim, a few years ago, put out the Rotatrim Monorail paper cutter. This cutter featured a single square bar. The square bar provided great support, but not quite as superior as the Professional series.

For one reason or another (perhaps for marketing purposes), Rotatrim decided to resurrect the Mastercut name. The old monorail line is now called the Mastercut “MC” series. It is still common, however, to find this cutter still being called the Monorail online.

Because the Mastercut name is being reused on a lower-end product, many people get frustrated when they discover their Mastercut is not the Mastercut of old.

You can find the current Rotatrim Professional “M” series cutters here and the new Mastercut “MC” series cutters here. You can find our entire selection of rotary paper cutters here.

Rotatrim Professional Series – Best Rotary Cutter Ever?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Rotatrim has made a significant name for themselves over the years with their line of rotary paper cutters. Photographers, copy shops, scrap bookers and more consider Rotatrim cutters the Holy Grail of rotary paper cutters. Why is it that these British-Made cutters are so popular? Are they really as good as everyone says they are?

There are a couple of reasons the Rotatrim line is popular. Most of this boils down to quality and build. Rotatrim cutters are heavy and made from solid components. If you ever have the chance to handle a Rotatrim next to another cutter, you will be amazed at the difference in quality. In many instances, the difference is as stark as comparing a bicycle to a Porsche.

The Rotatrim Professional Series of cutters are considered to be some of the best cutters made by Rotatrim. The cutting wheel is large, making cutting effortless, and the cutting head itself rests on two support bars. These two bars keep the cutting head solidly in place, preventing movement. This means cuts are very accurate and very straight every time.

While Rotatrim rotary cutters cost more up front, chances are pretty good that they will last for years. Many have reported their Rotatrim cutters lasting up to 10+ years. Now compare that to a Fiskars cutter, which you may be replacing every few months. The costs makes itself up quickly.

You can find our line of Rotatrim Professional Cutters here. If you need a rotary cutter, but the Rotatrim is a little much for you, here are five great high-quality alternatives.

Great Rotatrim Alternatives:

Cutting has never been so precise! Rotatrim paper cutters.

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Who would have thought the pizza cutter to be such an ingenious invention! Why? For eating pizza? That much is obvious. Circular blades are also used in rotary paper cutters, which are great for cutting paper, photographs lamination and more.

Rotary paper cutters
have a round blade that spins as it is run across paper. The round blade slices through the paper with the push of a hand. The round blade is encased in a housing that sits on a rail. This rail is firmly mounted to a base, eliminating any movement that could cause a crooked cut.
Rotatrim Paper Cutters
Rotary paper cutters are very popular with professional photographers who have to make sure every cut counts. Not only does a straight cut make a finished product look good, but it also saves money by eliminating ruined material.

Rotatrim is by far THE most popular rotary cutter we sell here at ABC Office. Rotatrim paper cutters are made in England with the highest quality parts available. This cutter can also cut through paper, card stock, laminated documents and other material.

What else is there to like about the Rotatrim cutters? For one, they ship for free. Being that we are centrally located in the United States, this means you will have your cutter in a matter of a few business days.

You don’t have to be a professional photographer to enjoy one of these beauties. These trimmers are also widely used for home projects, copy shops, schools and other businesses. Take a look for yourself and order your own Rotatrim paper trimmer today!

Precise Cutting is No Longer a Wish, But a Reality With the Rotatrim Rotary Paper cutter.

Tuesday, October 5th, 2004

Rotatrim Paper CuttersAt first they may look like pizza cutters fixed to metal bars, but the Rotatrim rotary paper cutters have moved up the line as the preferred method for precisely cutting paper. The idea is simple; a circular blade slides back and forth along a supporting rail. The result is paper that is precisely cut. You no longer have to worry about crooked cuts and ruined photos.

Rotary cutters first gained their popularity by scrapbookers who used them to cut photographs for albums. Photographers soon caught on, and rather than use a ruler and an exacto knife, now use rotary cutters as well. Rotary paper trimmers are now used by graphic arts departments, advertising agencies, print shops, universities, architects, drafters and more.

Mid-level Rotatrim rotary cutters are inexpensive and can precisely cut up to three millimeters of paper at once.

Rotatrim has taken these trimmers to the next level, creating industrial versions of this reliable paper cutter.

Industrial rotary cutters can cut up to four millimeters (5/32-inch) of paper at once and sheets of paper up to 99-inches in length. Industrial cutters are not only capable of cutting through paper, but can also cut through hardboard, rubber and shim steel

Motor powered Rotatrim rotary cutters can be operated with the push of a foot petal.

Jeremy Mayfield, a sales associate with, says that he always recommends the Rotatrim Cutters. “Customers are happy to hear that they don’t have to rely on traditional arm cutters that are unreliable and can cut at an angle”, says Mr. Mayfield. He has never had a complaint from a customer, and uses the cutters himself for occasional jobs.
