What Are Shredder Blades, Cutting Cylinders and Rollers Made From?

Dahle Cutting ShaftThere is a lot that goes into making a good paper shredder. This includes sound dampening technology, safety features, automation, capacity and much more. One feature that is often overlooked is the shredding blades. The blades on a shredder can vary widely as well as the quality. This can mean the difference between a shredder that lasts a year and a shredder that lasts a decade. I would like to cover how the shredder blades are built on a variety of our top brand paper shredders (found here).

At ABC Office we try to limit our paper shredder selection to the highest quality and reliable models out there. We have had opportunities to add cheaper shredders, but have opted not to for the sake of our customers. The shredders we sell are from reputable brands that stand behind their machines. Many of these companies offer a lifetime warranty on their shredder blades. I would like to cover the shredder blade technology that each of these manufacturers use.

  • Dahle – This manufacturer uses precision milled solid cylinders milled from a block of German steel. This allows for perfect alignment in an all-steel frame. Most of these shredder blades are guaranteed for life. These shredders are almost all made in Germany, ensuring excellent quality control.
  • Destroyit – These paper shredders are all made in Germany and their cross cut shredders use hardened steel cutting shafts. This allows them to accept staples, paper clips and credit cards without suffering any damage. Most of their standard cross cut cutting shafts feature a lifetime warranty and their super micro cut (SMC) feature a one-year warranty.
  • HSM – This is another German paper shredder manufacturer. Both their strip and cross cut shredders use hardened steel in their cutting rollers. Most of their strip and cross cut shredders are warranted to be free of manufacturer defect for the life of the shredder. Their higher-security shredders feature a five-year warranty on the cutting rollers from the date of the invoice.
  • Formax – This company has been manufacturing paper shredders for over half a decade now and their shredder lineup has proven the test of time. They use heat-treated steel cutters that are specially ground for longevity and require minimal oiling. Most of their shredders feature a lifetime warranty on the cutting head.
  • Kobra – Most of Kobra’s shredders use carbon hardened cutting knives in their paper shredders, which are unaffected by staples or paper clips.
  • Intimus – This company has been around for years. It used to be known as Intimus Schleicher International. The company is now owned by Martin Yale. They use hardened steel cutting cylinders. Many of their shredders use separate cutting blocks for shredding paper and digital media.

Each of the above mentioned brands have been around for years. They all make office shredders designed for daily continuous use. You can find our entire selection of paper shredders here. If you have additional questions about shredders, their features or warranties, please give us a call at 1-800-658-8788. Because we are an authorized dealer for each of these brands, we are also able to provide you with parts and service.
